Former UFC Fighter Paul Kelly Convicted Of Trafficking Heroin
Posted by: Jay Cee on May 19, 2013 in MMA 0 Comments and 0 Reactions
Former UFC fighter Paul Kelly (14-5) has been found guilty of trafficking heroin in the United Kingdom. Kelly is expected to face a lengthy prison sentence after jurors returned unanimous guilty verdicts following a four-day trial.
The Liverpool Echo reported that Kelly had denied being a major heroin dealer after an acquaintance of his was picked up with 1.5kg of import purity drugs in the footwell of his car.
The Liverpool paper explains Judge Mark Brown considered Kelly “the boss” in the organisation. According to The Echo, the investigation centered around Kelly and his best friend Christopher St John McGirr and their movements at the time of police raids in December 2011 and May 2012.
Twenty-eight-year-old Kelly has been fighting professionally in Mixed Martial Arts since 2005 and began fighting for the Ultimate Fighting Championshipsin 2008. Whilst with the organisation he built up a record of 5-4, but was released after his loss to Donald Cerrone at UFC 126 in February 2011. During his time with the promotion he picked up “Fight of the Night” honors on two occasions.
The paper reported that when the verdicts were being announced Kelly shouted “I’ve got two kids!”, and a man believed to be his dad was thrown out by police after an outburst.
Paul Kelly is currently in custody ahead of sentencing next month.

#10337damn didnt notice this on his twitter yesterday,,,Cholish said he was retiring no matter what,,,
John Cholish Retires Following UFC on FX 8
Posted on May 19, 2013 by MMAWeekly.com Staff
John Cholish on Saturday announced his retirement from fighting… before he stepped into the Octagon to fight Gleison Tibau.
“Looking forward to my last fight today, Win, Lose, or Draw,” he wrote on Twitter. “I’ll do my best to put on a strong performance and of course be Having Fun!”
That may seem a little odd for a 29-year-old with an 8-3 record (following a loss to Tibau at UFC on FX 8 in Brazil), but Cholish has always stood out in the MMA world as much for his “day job” as he did for his competitive fire in the Octagon.
A graduate of Cornell University, Cholish’s day job is on Wall Street in the financial industry. He’s worked for the likes of Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch, and attacks his job with the same passion that he always brought into the Octagon.
A standout on the Cornell wrestling team, for Cholish, MMA was the next logical step as a competitive outlet for his athletic side of him that Wall Street couldn’t fulfill.

Before he ever entered the Octagon, he told MMAWeekly.com that he intended to keep both careers going at full steam, at least for a couple years.
“I’m only 26 and I think I can burn the candle at both ends, at least for a couple more years. I don’t think there’s any reason to be lazy about it,” Cholish told MMAWeekly.com in 2010. “As long as I can be successful here, keep doing my job, and then train at night, I think I can keep both things going.”
Now, three years later, he’s gotten to a level were keeping up both is maybe just a little too much. He’s not at the top end of the pay scale, banking pay-per-view bonus bucks, and Wall Street still pays the bills quite nicely.
So for John Cholish, it’s back to the financial sector.
“Had fun tonight, wish I could have done better,” he added on Twitter following the fight. “Hats off to @TibauATT on great job & Brazilian fans were incredible!”Comment -

#10340As I cant get on this site at work currently I've had to post some ramblings Cerrone/Noons and Story/Pyle on Sherdog! Have pasted them below before they get buried in Oblivian's thread over there...
Regarding Noons' chances of winning a decision...
Well really depends on which Cerrone turns up. You could get the Cerrone that just wants to stand there and brawl and has no interest in taking the fight to the ground and consequently is a walking punch bag (Diaz fight), or you could get the Cerrone that wants to keep it standing but is more technical and has a bit more of a focus on defence rather than all-out brawling (Stephens fight), or you get the Cerrone that mixes in a bit of everything and takes it to the ground at some point (Ratcliff, Varner rematch, and Paul Kelly fights). With him coming off a loss, and a quite embarrassing loss considering the shiit talking he did about Pettis, I lean towards thinking that he will fight a bit smarter and will look to take the fight to the mat at some point. On that basis I'd say Noons' chances of taking a decision aren't very high (but clearly higher than him finishing Cerrone). But if Cerrone does just want to stand and trade then Noon's chances of getting the nod if it goes distance are considerably higher...I'd say around 40% or something as he could out-land Cerrone with punches, although Cerrone obviously has the advantage with kickboxing so I'd still favour him to win decision even if it was purely 15 minutes of stand-up.
Article about Cerrone from MMAFighting.com that Im sure most of have already read....
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- It was bright outside, though that's probably to be expected. The running joke says there's nothing to do in Albuquerque, and maybe that's why Greg Jackson set up shop in the middle of nowhere. For the most part, it's hard to argue. But none of that matters much to Donald Cerrone. On this brisk February morning, he just wanted to escape.
Drenched in heat from the southwest sun, Cerrone led a group of friends to the base of a neighboring desert mountain. It wasn't anything too advanced, "probably like a 5.6 or 5.7," according to "Cowboy" -- a good route for beginners. For Cerrone, an avid climber who basically lives his life outdoors, that didn't mean much in the way of cheap thrills. Today was simply about showing the rest of the group the ropes, training partner Leonard Garcia and striking coach Mike Winklejohn included.
Cerrone was just taking it easy. After all, this is the man who grew up aspiring to be a professional bull rider. By comparison, today's adventure was supposed to be a piece of cake.
"I was showing them how to set gear," Cerrone recollects. "I should've set way more gear, but it was just such an easy climb. I wasn't concerned. Just being overconfident, man..." His words trail off.
Cerrone plummeted backwards 40 feet to the ground that day. The climbing gear was supposed to catch him if he fell, though I guess "supposed to" is the key phrase in that sentence. In demonstrating that fact to Winklejohn, Cerrone ripped out "like four anchors," and thus began his descent back to earth.
Each anchor caught Cerrone a little bit, but not really.
"I fractured my hip and my foot, but, I mean..." Cerrone says, the words again trailing off as if to say, ‘it could've been much worse.'
Cerrone went right to the hospital, where doctors, incredulous at his apparent lack of severe injuries, proclaimed that the fighter must be made out of rubber. A few tests and MRIs later, Cerrone was released back into the wild, where he promptly sent out a tweet to his boss, UFC President Dana White.
"I guess you need to dance with death, just so you know how precious life is! Dana White, the wild man IS THROUGH," Cerrone wrote, adding the hashtags "#tooclosetoday" and "#9lives" to the end of his message.
The near-death experience lingered with Cerrone in the ensuing days. How could it not? Just a week earlier he'd received his next directive: Strikeforce import K.J. Noons at UFC 160. Forget about the fact that Cerrone almost plummeted to his demise, he'd also nearly cancelled a fight -- or more importantly, a payday -- with his carelessness. That simply wasn't acceptable.
Cerrone's over the wildman act now. Or, at least he is during training camps, one of which he's been in since the accident. He can't make any promises about what comes after.
"That's how I live, man. I love it. I'll die with my boots on one day," Cerrone says through a toothy grin.
Though don't mistake his words. Right now Cerrone's focus is solely on Noons. It better be after last time.
Cerrone still isn't sure what happened. For months, he campaigned to fight Anthony Pettis. Eventually he got what he wanted -- to an audience of 4.2 million people at UFC on FOX 6, no less. Though in hindsight, he probably wishes he hadn't.
To put it bluntly, Pettis embarrassed Cerrone. Stylish punches, elbows, jumping knees off the cage; everything was in play for Pettis, who punctuated his artistic masterpiece by dropping Cerrone with a picture-perfect liver kick midway through round one.
"There was so much wrong going on in my head," Cerrone thickly remembers. "I remember looking across the ring like, dang, I done pissed him off and he's comin' hard.
"It sucks. It really sucks losing, especially a fight like that. That's my second time being up there for contendership and losing, going back to the end of the pile. ... Emotionally you don't want to talk to anybody. You don't want to hear about it. You don't want to see it. I remember going over to my grandma's. We're watchin' it one time then we're deleting it off the DVR and not talking about it again."
Sure, it was bad when Nate Diaz brutalized Cerrone for three rounds, setting a UFC record for most significant strikes landed (238) in a 15-minute bout. But this? Getting humiliated on national television by a man he personally called out? This was worse.
Try as he might, Cerrone can't figure why it keeps happening.
"It's like, I don't know if it's the camera or the pressure, but I've got to figure that out," Cerrone admits. "Whatever makes me fight hard to get there, and then I seem to, like, fold under pressure. I don't know. I'm tryin' to [figure it out]. I got a new sports psychologist tryin' to work those kinks out."
It sounds cliché, but Cerrone feels like a new man now. With the help of his sports psychologist, Cerrone came to realize that he needed to fight his own fight, "for once." Go out and dominate the cage, show everyone why he's a striker to be feared. Believe in his jiu-jitsu, stop falling into opponent's gameplans, and most of all, stop burying deep into his own head.
Cerrone quit eating candy, too. At first glance, that may not seem like such a big deal. But when you realize he basically lived on the stuff for years -- "I'd rather trade real food for candy, as s--ty as that sounds," Cerrone chuckles -- it starts adding up to ‘big deal' range. The new diet, which consists of actual, healthy food, has already worked wonders.
Cerrone usually enters fight week weighing between 185 and 190 pounds. The lightweight limit is 155 pounds, meaning Cerrone is forced to cut upwards of 30 pounds within a matter of days. Even for the most seasoned professional, that's an inhuman task.
But this time around, things are a little different.
"It's hard not to cheat," says Cerrone. "I can go splurge and eat whatever I want without training camp. But we're professional athletes. We've really got to keep on it and stay [healthy].
"I'm tryin' to take a different approach, a different angle, and work on my weight. I think my weight might be a problem, comin' in so heavy. Right now I'm 174, so I feel great. Staying light."
Cerrone knows he's at the end of the lightweight line. When you lose like he lost, that tends to happen. Nonetheless, Cerrone also knows what ‘end of the line' really means in the UFC -- that he's just "two or three pretty outstanding wins" away from contention. Now that's a position he's comfortable in.
So it's back to work, back to the climb for "Cowboy." And when he next reaches the summit, hopefully the third time is the charm.
"When you lose, everything's wrong," Cerrone finishes. "But really, I just got to get back to what I used to do. Just start grindin' again."
This was Cerrone almost 2 weeks ago weighing 168lbs... (as the article says above he's usually 15-20lbs heavier at that point)...
Story/Pyle:
Are people thinking Story is going to wrestle-fuuck Pyle? Very interesting fight and difficult to call. After Pyle's domination of Hathaway and Story's struggles against Hath Im surprised the lines aren't closer to evens.
Quote:
yep, that is what's putting me off playing Pyle despite kind of thinking it should be closer to a pick-em. He does tend to back up against the cage at times and that is where Story has his most success. Also, although he dominated Hathaway in the grappling department, and Story struggled with Hathaway's grappling, Pyle didn't have to worry about Hathaway's striking or power so it is a different scenario. I guess Story is the closest thing to Rory Mac and Ellenberger as well (Pyle's last two losses) as he has the ability to take Pyle down and hurt him with GnP (which is how he was finished in those two losses). The likes of Head, Neer, Funch, Almeida, Lennox and Hathaway didnt present that kind of threat...I certainly never expected them to take Pyle down and bully him with their size and power like Ellenberger and Rory Mac did.
I really think it will be in Pyle's best interests to try and close the distance and work a trip takedown as soon as possible and try and get top position which would be his safest spot in this fight. His buddy Kampmann had considerable success with the trip takedowns so wouldnt be surprised if Pyle looks to follow suit and he does have previous with these kind of takedowns as I believe most of his takedowns against Hathaway were by body lock and trips. I highly doubt Story is going to offer a threat off his back, and he has shown that his defensive wrestling isnt as good as his offensive wrestling.
Also, I may be completely out on this but Story seems to not be as hench as he was a year or 2 ago! I thought he looked a bit smaller in his last fight - his shoulders and back not as big as when he fought Thiago Alves. Not that Im suggesting he's off the magic juice now or anything
