When I was a kid back when Ike was still Pres, I had a baseball card that said "Merkle pulls boner." Wish I still had that which was an obvious source of amusement to a bunch of prepubescent males. Of course, the play occurred in 1908, the last time my beloved Cubbies won the Series. There's an entertaining article about "Merkle's boner" at http://www.baseball-reference.com/bu..._Bonehead_Play

Dude! I had the same card . I had forgotten about it until you mentioned it. My how language usage changes through the years. Thanks for the memory. I also had the Hank Aaron card of him batting left handed. The negative (there is another old word) was accidentally reversed and they did not discover it until the cards were sent out. Great memories.

Along the lines of the “Merkle’s Boner” baseball card was an equally infamous and amusing headline that appeared in the Athens Banner Herald about 50 years ago. It is considered by many the greatest headline in the history of sports journalism.
Back in the mid-60’s - the Georgia Bulldogs had a star linebacker by the name of “Happy” Dicks and on the eve of the Georgia - South Carolina game one year, “Happy” had the misfortune of sustaining a practice injury which rendered him unavailable for the big game against the Gamecocks. The headline in the sports section the next morning read:
DOGS TO PLAY COCKS WITH DICKS OUT
True story.

I want to say it gives me great pleasure to see that the thread is being enjoyed by many, specifically those who are going back in time from their childhood. Just thought I mention it.
Also, as said previously, the contrarian selections will be tracked on
Cheers to the Contrarians

Other sports are just sports. Baseball is love.

cant wait to go to my first Padres game of the season April 8th against the Dodgers It is mexico fiesta night, which will probably mean more Dodger blue and mexican flags than any Padres attire, but thats alright..I wont let it bother my great mood of attending my first game of the season at beautiful Petco Park. I am getting shivers already just thinking about it, there is something magical about the first game of the new season, win or lose.

The Contrarian Observation Tower goes on a roadtrip taking us to Seattle for two days, then off to Vancouver, Canada. My second in command, the honorable TheLock will be presiding during times of incapacitation (code word: preoccupied with wife and kid). I will be posting from time to time.

Jake Peavy
Appears to be a pretty amazing recovery going on with the White Sox Jake Peavy. He's already had 2 cautious but very good outings only 8 months after completely tearing his Lat. Dorsi muscle off his shoulder. A pitcher coming back from something like this has never been done before. Usually just a slight tear in the LD will threaten a pitching career - but apparently he had no damage to the muscle itself although it furled back something like 5 inches after the blow out. He now has 3 little titanium anchors in the head of his humerus to which the LD tendon is tied with what must be some incredibly strong synthetic material. Again - pretty amazing.
Peavy went 3 innings vs the Giants in his 2nd outing and was perfect except for a lone jack by Aubrey Huff on what all agreed was a pretty decent pitch. Pierzynski said Peay's signature slider was as good as he's seen in the 2 years he's been catching him.
With Buehrle, Danks, Gavin Floyd, and Jackson already in the rotation -an effective Jake Peavy would give the White Sox an extraordinarily deep starting staff. The bullpen arms are also damn good. Put all that with the Big Donkey - Adam Dunn - blasting bombs every 14 ABs and I'm beginning to think they could be the team to beat in the AL Central.

Let's not forget el jefe of that crew, Oz who I had hoped the Cubbies would have lured 8 miles north to kick some butt and take no prisoners on the corner of Addison and Clark.

Good morning from the Pacific Nothwest. Had an incredible day capping college hoops, 5-1 on the day, with the one loss coming from a huge middle play in the Stonybrook game. All documented on .
Opening day bash at Gulfstream Park will be exciting. The contrarian selection will undoubtedly ring throughout the civilized world. The question I put out this morning, does TheJewBear bring the sardines to opening day.

I don't know about fantasy baseball ratings or rankings - but two of the databases I use for capping pitching are:
For sortable pitching stats (click on headings to sort or check box to compare specific matchups) -
My ratings are not purely statistical but include a number of subjective considerations/intangibles.

Casey at the bat, what a classic, reminds me of elementary school. I don't know why I am recalling that time. It seems baseball, like no other sport, brings us back to our childhood. How special those times were and the fact that some of those people are no longer with us.

Appreciate your interest, figue - but at this point I think I'm going to hang loose around here and concentrate on my handicapping rather than doing daily writeups.
Although I enjoyed doing it, the daily commitment of a thread can for me be counterproductive to a degree due to the time I tend to put into it. The handicapping and price shopping have to take priority.
To resurrect my old signature - The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

Looks like Ivan Nova has pitched his way into the Yanks rotation. Geez - what little I saw of him last year was anything but impressive - low 90's FB - nothing of note to go with it - served up more than a hit an inning - walked too many - and struck out too few. He's either gotten a hell of lot better or the Yanks are in big trouble.
Apparently they worked out Kevin Millwood and offered him a minor league deal with a chance to make the club - but he turned it down - looking for a major league contract. Still have to believe they're going to pick up a pitcher with at least some big league rotation cred before the season opens or very soon thereafter. I think everyone knows they're desperate and are really enjoying it as they wait to make a killer deal.
BB- I know if I had to go to someone at this point it would be you, I feel as if this should be pretty accessible data but I am not able to find it, do you have the numbers if you were to bet every dog for the whole season what your record and unit count would be for last season or any of the previous lets say 5 seasons? and then also of more interest, what would be the record if you flat bet only home dogs and would you be up or down units? thanks in advance

I'm not sure how far back this goes, but this would be your record and ROI on home dogs in the past 5262 chances:
SU: 2400-2862 (-0.7 rpg)
average line: +125 / -137
on / against: +$9,812 / -$35,840
ROI: +1.9% / -5.0%
