The Braves acquired shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who has 17 home runs at the All-Star break, on Wednesday in a five-player trade with the Toronto Blue Jays.
I just jizzed in my pants.
Traded a SS with 0 HR's for one with 17, I like it. Enjoy Esco's attitude problems Toronto!
We also got rid of Jo-Jo Reyes in this deal, thank god.

Anything you can tell me about Gonzalez that the numbers don't show? Pretty much all I know about the fella besides his stats are that he's a whole lot older than Esco, and has a relatively affordable option for next year which is nice.

You would have to think so. I have a hard time believing his power's gone for good. The guy's gotta go deep at some point. Even when his offense is down like it is though, he's a huge asset at SS.

Who gives a crap about going deep?
I understand if we got rid of him because of attitude problems, but I don't like the trade strictly based on numbers.
We're giving up a guy who has shown some very serious signs of talent in the past. Yes, he's having a horrific season, but those things happen. In return, we get a guy who is a career .248 hitter. He's hitting .259 this year and he's having a "killer" season? Are you shitting me?
All that said, I'm happy to have that Hanley Ramirez wannabe off the team.

Trade definitely seems to be more about Yunel's attitude more than anything. Unfamiliar with the Blue Jays minor leaguers involved in the trade.

I kinda agree with this. Definitely has shown a whole lot of promise, but like you said, I'm pretty sure this has a whole lot to do with his attitude/effort, especially given that game against the Mets a week ago where he had the lackadaisical effort in the field, and the throw he floated to Troy Glaus which left Troy a bit shaken up. I'm pretty sure Bobby just got sick of having to talk to the guy. I bet Chipper won't mind not having to hear him whistle in the field all game too...

For his career Yunel is a .291 hitter, posted 14 hr and 76 rbi with a .299 last season for the dreadful Bravos and now gets to go to the potent Toronto offense??! The only reason Gonzalez had the numbers he posted thusfar. Yunel is 27 years old vs Alex's 33+. Gonzalez played a TOTAL of 112 games over the last two seasons, is a lifetime .248 hitter, and has reached his third highest single season HR total already by the all-star break this season. Gonzalez has the numbers this season thanks in total to those in the lineup around him.
This is an absolute joke of a deal. The only thing I can say is thanks to the braves for getting this future super star out of my division and for boosting his 2010 campaign as he is my starting Fantasy SS in a couple of places. 8 hr and 41 rbi over his previous two, injury-ridden seasons, but the braves jump on a hot first-halfer for their future star, 27 year old SS??
This cant be real, can it? I haven't seen the details, just saw it here... but it seems like something a ML team wouldn't do.
Stupid Braves fan. Learn about baseball.

Alex Gonzalez sucks ass, though. Dont expect anything from him. He isn't even that great of a fielder.

Decent points for a Phillies fan, but like you said, you don't know anything about the non-statistical stuff, which I would assume has a whole lot to do with this trade being made.

They are a second half team. They have had the same record at the midway point each of the last three seasons. and we know how the last two went. Don't expect anything different this time.
Utley, Rollins x 2, Lidge, Madson, Happ, Polanco, Durbin, Ruiz have been on the DL this season. Second only to the Sawks.
Keep dreaming, Atls.

There is no power in Atlanta, and the pitching is too young. They will fold. trust me.

You're obviously biased towards the Phillies. I think Atlanta has good enough pitching to overcome their lack of power. Although power doesn't usually win championships, so its not that big of a deal.

I don't think the Phillies have much with pitching after Halladay and Hamels. I mean Blanton is a joke and Moyer? Kendrick eh? They need pitching help if they want to win the division. They aren't going to win with that rotation.

Phils will win the NL EAst, the Cards will win the NL Central and The Rockies/Dodgers will win the NL west. And whichever of those finishes second, will win the Wild Card. No division leader will win their division or make the playoffs this year.
Bet on that.
