I'm not quite sure how a CEO can get away with diverting $30 million a year into tips. BUT...

I know at least a dozen corporate tax lawyers through the years. These guys oversee billion dollar companies. I know some guys that know the tax code inside and out. They know everything about income, wages, etc., that I can't even begin to think I know. You give them a loophole, they immediately find a way to exploit it. Setting up entities in different states and countries for that matter. The government will never be stupid enough to allow any income, including tips to not be taxed.

Now I can see Trump and Harris saying they would not tax tips under a certain amount, say $30k but that won't help those people anyway. It's grandstanding by both of them. There's other ways that would be much more effective in helping the working poor. How about increasing child tax credit?

So why aren’t those tax attorneys calling employees’ first $17,000 a gift and they keep 100% of it? Then the next $13,850 will also be tax-free and nearly $31,000 of the workers’ money will not be taxed at all, nor will the employer have to pay their share of the Payroll Taxes. Imagine how much money Walmart could save by calling each employee's first $17,000 a year a gift and therefore isn't subject to any taxes on the employee's or employer's side.
