Hi,

Just curious to know how many registered participants are actually in this contest as of 4-Sep-2008 10:30 EST. Also, to make sure I understand, is it correct to say that for this week "the Prick" has picked only 3 games (Atl Fal +3, Ten Tit +3, Sou Flo -14) and has decided to pass on the "best bet" option allowing to score double for a game? I know the verification can take time with everyone trying to get registered during these days leading up to the first week. I am still listed as "pending" ( noon 9/4) after a 9/1 account open and deposit. If I am still listed as pending on Sat, will I be able to make my picks for week 1 even though the verification may happen later?

( sorry if this was covered in this long thread - I haven't reread the whole thread and I might have missed this)

I mistakenly entered my account info a 2nd time and I have the same account listed twice with a contest credit of 8. I assume this won't be a problem and your software will catch this.

Right now that's not in the cards, as there's been some decided feedback against this for those whom abuse the feature. Maybe if anything we'll roll in some consensus picks.

I am also curious to know how many players we have this year. Can we get a count on the amount of competition. Also, is there any way to see the current scoreboard(I do not mean see specific picks just see who is +1,0,-1,ect)

Yeh this year sucks without the scoreboard, also the format seems a little strange with everyone who beats the prick sharing, so if the Prick is 0-3-1 then over 90% of people win?

Yeah its unlucky if you go 4-0 and the prick goes 1-3...thats the breaks I guess

I have some quick questions, sorry if it's already answered in previous posts.
1. I have a las palmas account that opened several months ago, but never deposited. I have checked with their management that this account is considered new and if SBR approves they will have no question asked to confirm it. I want to make sure this is also fine with SBR.
2. For the extra cash bonus and winning, I'm wondering if it's provided by SBR or the sponsoring book. And they are all 'cash', not 'freeplay', right?

Essai - The math behind BTP

Hi,

I am going to try to explain the calculations involved, but please keep in mind that I'm not a math expert and may be wrong. I would appreciate feedback/explanations/clarifications if I've missed something.

Number of participants week 1: 136
Prick's score: 3
Participants that beat the Prick: 12 (10 with score of 5 and 2 with score of 4)

Since the Prick has 3 points, we must subtract 3 from all the participants points and pay the ones > 0

The guy who has 2 points should win a prize 2 times greater than the one who has one point (prize prorated to the number of points)

So (10 * X) + (2 * X / 2 ) = $5000.00

In other words if X is the prize for the guys in first position X/2 should be the prize for the guys in second position and if you add all prizes up you should get 5000.00.

(2 * X / 2) can be simplified to X (2 * 100 / 2 = 100)

So (10 * X) + X = 5000 or
11 * X = 5000 so
X = 5000 / 11
X = 454.545454


X = 454.55 (amount for guys with 5 points)

X / 2 = 227.27 (amount for guys with 4 points)

I think I've got it but maybe their is as simpler way to arrive to the same results.

Also a very big thanks to SBR for this superb contest, do you realize that they are giving out $85000.00 (I'm assuming that someone will always beat the prick - I feel pretty confident of that (17 / 200 = only about an 8% (I think - I may be wrong here again) chance that no one beats him for one week) between say 200 contestants, that is still an average of 425.00 per person just for putting in picks, and playing wisely your winnings... What if only 2 contestants scored 5 and 10 scored 4, what would be the prize for each contestant? (according to this formula it should be 714.29 and 357.14)

It appears that The Prick was in a surprisingly generous mood this morning and/or failed to read the posted policies regarding BTP prizes:

All prize amounts will be credited to the contestants new sportsbook account and are subject to a 5x rollover as well as the Terms and Conditions of their chosen sportsbook. Weekly prize amounts will be credited twice throughout the season ... at the conclusion of NFL Week 7 and the conclusion of NFL Week 14.

Certainly the changes constitute an improvement, but I have to say I still think they miss the point to a certain degree.

You’ve set up a situation where it’s impossible for many SBR posters to participate in Beat The Prick. (And that “impossible” part is key. Even though one of the new provisions specifies “SBR Forum posters choosing NOT to create and fund a new sportsbook account…,” that’s importantly misleading. It’s not a “choice,” at least not for some posters. That’s precisely what’s objectionable about it.) Ironically, what these posters are being told is “If you’ve followed our advice and played at the books we recommend most highly, if you’re already patronizing the books sponsoring this contest, then you’re not eligible.”

What has been done to correct this anomaly? Two things. One, “Well OK, we’ll let you participate in a lesser way in the contest for lesser prizes.” And two, “Just this once as a favor, we’ll let you in the contest—if you happen to fulfill a further retroactive condition that some of you do and some don’t—but after this one time exception you’re locked out of future contests.”

Like I say, that’s better than not having changed it at all, but I believe it falls well short of what’s called for.

People are being excluded who shouldn’t be excluded. Surely you can do better than “We’ll let some of them back in one time only, plus we’ll set up a junior version of the contest everyone can participate in.”

Amend the rules in a common sense way that lets these excluded people back in fully and permanently.

Rule change enabling contestant to re-up with a pre-existing book they are happy with would be favorable to being coerced into signing up and funding a book they have no interest in!
