People don't take pride in living here. Most people are from some other part of the country/world and consider that their home. I truly believe that the lack of town pride is the number one problem with Las Vegas.
The whole idea of "sin city" also hurts the town. Something ****** up will happen and people will just scoff it off and say, "It's sin city!" In other places when terrible unethical stuff goes down the citizens of the town will usually take action and make it known they don't want that type of stuff happening (for better or worse). The whole idea of making your town a better place and having pride about where you live just doesn't happen in Vegas.
I think there are just too many different cultures and values, it's a true melting pot, which is awesome, and I think the town works for what it is, but it is far from great.Comment -

#45I've been living in Vegas for about 6 months now. Work in a SB and enjoy the whole sports betting industry. I don't mess around with any other sort of gambling.
The town has way too many issues, terrible people, and the people who say Vegas is great are crazy. There are great aspects of Vegas, but the town in general is not great.
Would never want to raise a kid here.
You've made all these conclusions after living in Vegas for a whopping six months...........many of your hours spent working in a sportsbook.

#49I've been thinking of moving to Las Vegas within the next 2-4 of years.
I love the sportsbooks with all those T.V.s on one wall. Don't have to jerk your neck around and run to different parts of a bar to see multiple games like the bars in this town.
I'm single, middle-age, keep to myself. I'll take a shitty job bartending or waiting tables out there.
If you guys got any useful advice for moving out there, I'd appreciate it.
Any unforeseeables?
How does that work permit thing work out there anyways?Comment -

#50I agree. I grew up in Vegas, went to public schools, and have done just fine. Living in Vegas is a lot different than visiting Vegas, especially when you don't work in the casino/nightlife industry. I work normal 8-5 hours and have a wife and 2 kids. I rarely go to the strip unless friends are in town and make the occasional trip to a local book like Stations or Coasts for sports betting entertainment. The town has changed quite a bit the last 10 years, but its still a great place to live IMO.Comment -

The review may be unqualified, and I have not lived here for very long, but if you compare Vegas to many other towns I'm not sure how one could call Vegas "great." High crime rate, random garbage on sidewalks, incredible high rate of people hustling (not in a good way), unfunded parts of town that need more funding and better schools.
It may be every big city in general and Vegas might be no different, but when I think of the word great, Vegas does not come to mind. When I think of a great city/town I think the majority of the citizens are nice and happy, the majority of the citizens take pride in their community, there is a low crime rate, there is little pollution and garbage in open spaces, the majority of the citizens speak the same language, there are few cops because the citizens of the community are law abiding citizens. I heard some crazy statistic that 20% of the people who live in Las Vegas are driving without car insurance.
I would say that a low ratio of cops and arrests/per person would be a decent indicator of a nice town. Look at how many Bail Bonds places are in this town?
I do believe Vegas is a melting pot, and it works for what it is, but I would not claim it is some amazing blissful place to live.Comment -

No sense of community? -- The only think worse than shitty neighbors are shitty neighbors that are all up in your business. Being left alone is the nuts.
Random trash everywhere? -- We get a lot of wind, and this may lead to it. For the most part though, very clean, thanks to all the Mexican labor. Fairly low pollution, due to the lack of industrial commerce here.
Hustlers? -- Mostly harmless wanna-bes. This town is so big and varied, not one person or group of people thinks they run things. Keeps people in check.
High crime rate -- Only in the areas that are obviously crime zones. Strip clubs, areas within 2 mi of the Strip, North Vegas, Northeast Vegas. All very easy places to avoid, just like anywhere else. Leaves a LOT of the valley up for your enjoyment, the majority actually.
Being able to pretty much make your own rules, hot women from every ethnicity, a go-get-it attitude, proximity to California (without all the taxes), very few insects, you don't have to go visit friends because they'd rather come visit you, top notch food, nightlife for all different kinds of people, we've got it all.
And there's no better place to be 25-50 years old and single. The only thing my hometown of St. Louis ever caters to is kids/families, the elderly, and helping out lazy poor people that don't deserve help. Vegas could give a shit about all those things. My kind of town!!Comment -
