As you know I'm very high on Mighty Mouse's Tigers this year, as they get hit with all those self imposed sanctions and lost a few scholly's over the next few years. If you haven't had a chance to read the letter Coach DS wrote about growing up in portland and raised by his grandmother, etc during the interview process, its a very well done piece. I'll try and provide a link, but this guy is going to do big things on the coaching side for years to come. Anyway shut up Lkid and just give me the reasoning already lol. I digress
Pacific enters this non conference matchup boasting a 3-4 record w/ all 4 losses coming on the road. Lost to 14 UCLA, 163 UC Irvine, 76 Nevada, & most recently to 308 Cal St Fullerton, just 5 days ago. The tigers are very experienced group returning 4 starters from last year, and have 4 players averaging Double Figures. However, they will be w/o their Senior PG (2 time honorable mention All-WCC) w/ a concussion and this is going to cause 6-5 Redshirt Junior Swingman Ray Bowles to help w/ the ball handling duties along w/ the senior 6-0 combo guard David Taylor. I believe the big reason for the loss to 308 Cal St Fullerton (by 1) was the fact TJ Wallace went down just 3 minutes into the game. Pacific likes to play fast, and this is going to cause them problems, especially in this matchup, flying to east coast to challenge the hosting Minutemen in Amherst.
Derek Kellog's Umass Squad is 5-2 w/ both losing coming by a combined 5 points, (@ 101 Ole Miss by 2, & most recently vs 72 UCF by 3, Saturday. UCF was a very tough matchup as they are able to dictate tempo and its not how the Minutemen want to play. I guess their nickname is fitting as they play at one of the fastest paces in the nation. Umass is a very young squad, as they don't have any seniors on Scholly's, lead by 6-4 junior guard Donte Clark (15,5,3 per). However the arguably have the best freshman class in the A-10 ( 6 incoming freshmen) and I've really enjoyed watching them. Luwane Pipkins (11,4,3,4 per) is a 5-10 chicago kid who sat out last year due to academic reasons is lightning quick. DeJon Jarreau (10,4,5 per) is a 6-5 swing man who is able to play PG, loves to pass and when his 180 frame fills out, he's going to be a force. Kellogg talks about how his versatility enables him to guard multiple positions, allows more options for others.
W/ the loss of Tj Wallace, the long flight, combined w/ the fact UMass should get whatever they want inside. I really love this 1h line, they should cover the game as well, but lets just take the smaller # over the first 20.
Pacific is not able to play slow, so just because their Starting PG/Leader is out, doesn't mean they gonna work the clock imo. Umass loves to run and I simply don't think the tigers will be able to keep up. When your PG is out, on the road, you will turn the ball over more which will allow the minutemen to run even more.
Lay the 5 for the 1st 20 for $300 Max play (sober lol)
