I am curious as to how much time people spend on figuring out their plays. I noticed alot of people are into researching their plays and using trends, angles, stats etc etc. On a heavy NBA schedule night like 10 or more games i myself spend about 30 minutes into looking for info. I rarely let too much info clog my thinking and try to keep it basic and i have games circled on my calendar months in advance. So tell me guys how much time do you spend.
HOw much time do you CAPPPERS spend capping games?

#5TOO much... I am my own worst enemy when it comes to this shit.... I know its cause Im fairly new to nba/sportsbook betting in general. Once I have a couple years under my belt Ill be able to relax and make my picks more confidently. ATM, Im a mess when making my pics.... ****ing stressed right out usually before tip, and when Im all jacked on caffene (word to the wise, dont drink too much coffee when making picks) it just makes it worse.
Then tip comes, I crack beers and everything melts away... sheeeit, maybe I should just start making my picks half drunkComment -

No dont do that- i drink almost everyday but i rarely crack open a beer or have a shot until the 10:30 pm game has started and then i cant make any bad bets cause i dont have enough time to get drunk.Comment -

#9I know man... I have done the aforementioned drunken-style-betting.... Shit worked good for Jackie Chan in the kungfu movie, didn't translate well into gambling. #10I like to take a look at the full slate of games on the board and pick the matchups I find most appealing that are on T.V. that I will enjoy watching. I then take out my lucky 1921 Silver Dollar and flip it... Heads I take the favorite and Tails I take the dog. Also, I do this when betting the totals. Heads I take the over and Tails I take the Under... The amazing thing it has been working pretty well over the last several years. If I lose I repeat the process and double up on my next wager.. I just keep betting more and more until I hit. Pretty simple handicapping formula for me and damn good MMComment -

#12Usually I read preview of game then do research and come up with games I like, then throughout the day I pay attention to line movements and comments on the forum about the games I liked in the AM. when I feel confident I make the play. Where I get nervous is when I like too many games becuase odds are they aren't all going to hit so I have to make a decision on which are strongest plays. I generally have my best nights when I only play 2 or 3 games a night. Honestly I've been pretty strong the last month or so on games I decided not to take to start then taking in 2nd half becasue I already have a feel for team and for how the game is going.
to answer your questions prob about 2 hours throughout the day as I get a breaks from work then all night watching games to see 2nd half linesComment -

#13Dont waste more then a couple of minutes. There is no angle or model that can determine energy level your going to get. Throw trends and such out the window, if your team does not show up, you do not win. Research for 5 minutes, 5 hours or just flip a coin, its all the same.Comment -

#15The truth? About 5 minutes. I feed the data into my spreadsheet and see what my system plays are. That's it. I don't know any of the players, except Kobe, he was in the news a lot a few years back, and I finally figured out who Lebron James is, but other than that I don't know any of the players (OK, I know who that K-man guy is and Nimsowitz) and I don't want to. It's all a numbers game to me.
But that's not all I do. I then come to this site and see who the top cappers are playing. When their plays agree with my system plays then I have a very strong lean. Also, when all of the top cappers on this site like one side, I have a very strong lean the other way. I'm actually pretty good at "handicapping the handicappers."
That's it. Anything more would be information overload.
I do spend a lot of time looking for subsets of my system that might be out performing, and I also spend a lot of time looking at everything under the sun, which currently include those nebulous line moves.
When I'm playing poker, I'm able to watch a lot of simultaneous games, and that gives me some insight as to how certain teams are performing (or as the case may be--not playing worth a damn) and it's interesting to me that very often half way through the first or second quarter I can tell you exactly how the game is going to end up.
Other than that I don't know squat about sports, and to be perfectly honest I don't think those that do are doing all that much better.Comment -

#18I dont know I usually cap while I am at work. Take a few minutes look at the lines on each game. Go back doing my work. Took quick glances at each game and matchups, go back to doing work, eliminate certain games then the games that are still there I spend the rest of my workday switching between work and capping the games I liked. Come up with a decision and look at some insight on here and research deeper. Its nice when you see the studying pay off but it sucks when the game goes the totally wrong wayComment -

#24I spent 9am to 5pm as I do it at work( 2 Days a week).
I do heavy data analsysing over 6 systems and now a new formulated opinions w/ 10 top cappers which 5 have now been permanently based in. I use a PR system for the cappers and overal will take the value of the PR depending on what there value picks is and factor that into my Systems Play Formula which was created by Bustabook and add variable factors such as current form, home/away, b2b games, injuries using lks systems with the downloaded PR's and adjust them w/ ESPN PR's.Comment -

#27Here's how I capped today's games. My system picks Cleveland and Denver (Duh!)
Two home favorites. Home favorites are the weakest link in my system (108-102 (51%) -3.83 Units. It doesn't mean they are bad bets or that they'll lose, but it isn't as advantageous as other plays. And quite frankly, in my opinion, both of these games could go either way.
Now matchup wise, I don't particularly like one game over the other. They are about equal. Motivational wise, I don't really have any insight. (Not like last night where Portland was HUNGRY for revenge following their EMBARRASSING HOME COURT DEFEAT, and shitty GS playing shitty Clippers, but GS was at home coming off a home loss, and they can really throw up some points--go with the best shitty team playing at home.) I don't see anything like that tonight.
Therefore I know I would have to be damn lucky to win them both. A split is likely. I could also lose them both.
I can see no advantage in playing both games or one over the other, so tonight is a wash. I pass.

The way I look at it is this: if a game is worth your time to list as a play then it should receive as much action as all of your other plays.
I love Lakerboy like a brother, but if you look closely at his plays he averages about 3.75 units per play. If my system plays were graded at 4 units each I would be right up there with everyone else. You could also divide LB's plays by 4 if you want to see how he is doing vis-a-vis one unit per play.
It's really, really, tough to assign units to individual plays. There are some here, including LB who do it well, but I think most cappers would be well advised to just stick to one unit per play.Comment -

#34It takes all day until the games start. NO Seriously. You always have to figure out if your better off waiting to get a better line or take the line that is currently out before it goes in the opposite direction on you. Plus injuries, how the hell can you make a bet when you don't know who is playing. Like yesterday ATLANTA: Jamal Crawford listed as questionable, how the hell can you make a bet until you are 99% sure that he is playing or not. It's funny too when the books try to fake people out by starting to move the line on a game weather it's an over/ under or spread by a few points, only to bring the line back to the original open. I feel books don't know if a star player is playing or not so they test the line to see how much action they get by moving it in a certain direction. Other than that it usually takes me an hour to hour and a 1/2 to cap a 13 game day but thats the easy part.Comment -
