Caldera Race Recap Caldera was an improved second today at Oaklawn Park.
He broke much better and showed increased early speed (not a surprise) to stalk from the fence in a joint second as a longshot ran off to open up by a wide margin and set solid splits. Caldera seemed to idle a bit as they entered the second bend, and jockey Keith Asmussen had to really ask him to maintain his position. He started to get going again at the top of the lane, and was taken out in the clear to get room to lengthen his stride (this was absolutely the right call by Keith). Caldera slowly gained ground to race into second, but it was much more of a grinding move rather than one showing much turn of foot.
This was undoubtedly a step in the right direction for Caldera, but he doesn’t seem to have fully figured things out yet—you’ll hear Keith say that he was a bit passive during points of the race. He just didn’t seem fully clued in to the task at hand, but hopefully this additional race experience will help the lightbulb come on for next time. Adding blinkers might also make sense, but we’ll let our Hall of Fame trainer make that call.
All in all, it’s tough to be too disappointed with a second-place finish and we’ll look for Caldera to take another step forward next time out—he should be pretty tough if he does
authentic gallop (who beat him) had so much more experience and conditioning ..I think it was a solid effort considering that and he should move forward off of it

Just looked at the Liams Map. It's a small world JBEX.
I used to train for the owners father in Md. when Ohio closed down for the winter and early spring. His name was Jacques Politi.
Pretty sure I met Joel along the way as he brought one of his kids with him a couple of times. Long time ago though.
a little better reference for politi

This is spot on IMO. He seemed to lose some interest but I think it was more like" what the hell are we doing?" And while he gained back interest to a degree, it was never as much as into the 1st turn or early down the backside.
All in all, he learned a ton. He will be better for that. See if he eats up, acts the same, trains the same and is ready to roll in a couple weeks or so and if so, he will get a little sharper mentally each race.
It is subtle to see, but the rider was exactly correct in what happened.
Thanks Batt !

Sweet Voyage Update Sweet Voyage has remained on a regular training schedule at Santa Anita Park and has been galloping right along. After discussions with trainer Dan Blacker and our partner, Owlcatraz Racing, we have decided to make a circuit change for the benefit of Sweet Voyage.
We hinted at this idea being a possibility in our race recap and think a move to Turfway Park will give Sweet Voyage the best chance to succeed moving forward. This change is being made for two core reasons: surface and race options. Sweet Voyage has proved to train much better over the Tapeta training track surface at Santa Anita and ultimately we believe the ability to race over that type of surface will benefit her greatly. Turfway Park will also give us various class levels and options to run at, whereas at Santa Anita, we will only have a maiden special weight and a $50,000 maiden claiming race on turf. Of course, there is no guarantee that this will do the trick, but our team believes being proactive in this case will give us our best chance of being successful.
With a change in circuit will come a change in trainer. Sweet Voyage will ship into the barn of Jeff Hiles, who trains out of Highpointe Training Center in Kentucky and Palm Meadows in Florida during the winter. One of the benefits of the training center he trains out of (Highpointe) is the uphill synthetic surface, which is a great course to strengthen a horse’s hind end. One notable thing we have observed with Sweet Voyage is her lack of wanting to change leads in her works/races, and training on that uphill gallop could potentially help her.
We worked with Jeff briefly last year and have been waiting to give him another opportunity. He runs a small barn, which allows him to be very hands-on with his stable and he is a great communicator. We felt this was the perfect time to add him back to our team of trainers.
Sweet Voyage will ship in the coming days and arrive in Kentucky next week. We will let Jeff evaluate her and begin introducing her to his program.

Real Savvy Update Enjoy this recent update on Real Savvy at Wavertree Stables. As you will hear in the video above from farm trainer Ciaran Dunne, the time off will do him a world of good being a big horse and you can see he has already put on some beneficial weight. We will wait for a confirmation from trainer Christophe Clement of when he wants Real Savvy to head back into training, but we expect that to be around the first of the year.https://cdnb-media.myracehorse.com/b...4196761133.mp4

I'm sure this break will be a real good thing Batt. In a perfect world, he could build up a bit in the hind end. Sometimes, when training up to your first race or so, that area will weaken somewhat. The time away might allow that area to fill out a bit. Not really a criticism. Just an observation on a horse that already looks pretty darn good.
The trainer is doing a great job with him IMO.
Thanks Batt.

definitely a sire/dam sire combo that can get a top runner on grass or dirt..always consider that a positive for liking a synthetic surface

Thought I would let everyone reading this know that I had a conversation with a highly regarded racing writer over the weekend and followed that up with a letter I wrote to the director of the Hall Of Fame in Saratoga Springs NY.
What I provided was some insight about the career of Richard E. Dutrow Sr. that many most likely do not know.
Dickie was on the ballot for induction in to Hall a few times but not recently. And because he died in 1991, many of the writers that vote today never saw him in action or even know the basic history of his career. So, I provided that. I got a very nice response for the Dir. Of Communications of the HOF.
And while I doubt my letter will get much traction for this year, next year, for 2026, the veterans committee will stop looking at 1900-1959 and start looking at 1960-2000.
Some of the statistics I found were pretty incredible but what really jumped out were the names of some of the people that worked for Dickie, learned under him, and became trainers. Talk about a trainers tree. More to come soon I promise.

I think I need to be careful about what I post in regards to this so with that said...
Here is an excerpt from the letter to the HOF committee:
Above and beyond Mr. Dutrows many accomplishments, I have compiled a short list, as there are more I am sure, of trainers or people that worked for, and learned under the guidance of Richard E. Dutrow.
Here are some of those names:
Trainers:
Anthony Dutrow 2007 winners 76.5 Million earnings.
Rick Dutrow Jr. 1900 wins. 98 Million earnings.
Sydney Dutrow 60 wins 1.4 Million
Ronnie Alfano 1824 wins 18.5 Million
Mark Reid 1821 wins 21 Million
Robert Butch Reid 991 wins 40 Million
Rudy Rodriguez 1,617 wins 79.4 Million
Michael Pino 2100 wins 46.2 million
Kate Demasi 1828 wins 42 Million
S T R 1,062 wins 7.6 Million
Those numbers represent over 15,210 wins and over 430 Million in purses . Many of these trainers are still active so those numbers will continue to grow.
Beyond trainers, there are many people who worked for Mr. Dutrow that became tremendous caretakers of horses but did not become trainers. While there are too many to mention, I will mention one person if you don't mind. Her name is Susan Pearson. Susan loved being a groom. That was what she wanted to be. And she was tremendous! A very successful person from New Jersey hired her for a summer at his farm taking care of his horses. He quickly recognized how incredible she was, and she has worked for him ever since. Roughly 20 years I think. His name is Bruce Springsteen. I can't imagine that he ever knew Mr. Dutrow but if ever asked about how Susan learned about doing things the right way, I am sure Mr. Springsteen would give a glowing recommendation.

definitely should recognize trainers whose concentration is claimers..imo he would be an almost automatic HOF'er off his accomplishments as a trainer and who he's mentored and have had success in the game including yourself..whether he does or doesn't it was good of you to make them aware of this
wasn't aware of the bruce's affinity for horses .. (boss's horses lol) .. pretty nice gig to get for her and sure he would have a lot of praise and respect for mr dutrow for imparting her with these abilities ..aware bruce's daughter (jessica) is an equestrian competitor and won a silver medal in show jumping at the Olympics

It seemed like the right thing to do JBEX. And if you can't do it at Christmas, when can you, right?
Pretty sure those horses on the farm are his daughters but I just assume. Really happy for Sue and her husband who was one of Dutrow's 4 generals as he called it, back in 1975. He was my asst. when I was there. A great guy, heck, great couple, and Mike has since worked the N.J. circuit galloping back in the day, and being an asst. trainer for several top name outfits there over the years. They are both very accomplished horse people and deserve all the accolades they get. I saw Sue last year at the Laurel horseman's reunion. It was great to see her. It had been a long time.
Apparently Jessica is a fabulous equestrian rider but I have never met her.

sorry to report that uncle mo (sire of kingsbarns and many other great horses) has passed away at the age of 16

Just like in other sports, the writers are the ones that vote. So that is what needs to be addressed. I know a couple that are still around and will be reaching out to them, not so much to push the agenda but more so to try and better understand the longstanding logic of the overall process.
On one hand, I can see why the best horses get the most attention but on the other hand, I don't get it at all. Hopefully those old friends and acquaintances can enlighten me on the subject. We shall see.

yes it is ..have to think if he had stayed healthy would've had at least 5 more crops..hopefully down the road , kingsbarns will help sustain the bloodline well ..nyquist is his most expensive son at stud so far and I believe he stands for $85k

Well Opti, that is really cool. Congratulations first of all. Please pass that along to your brother. I know how much he must put into what he does . Well deserved accolades I'm sure. What I can tell from the video of looking at the horse is that if any of my babies came in looking like that, I still be training. Lolol.
Seriously, she looks GREAT ! I like everything I see. I noticed she is a September foal. That is really late in America for a baby but maybe down under, that is typical. I do not know. As long as they are all that young in that race coming up, it's a fair game.
She looks smart, calm, and athletic. Nice size, scope, eye, you name it. Bloodlines are real solid. I love how they highlighted Danzig and and Hellbent in the breeding page. I get why but that last name at the bottom, Mill Reef... OMG. 14 starts, 12 wins, 2 seconds. Not bad at all.
Mill Reef was a Virginia Bred from Paul Mellon's farm. That was elite status back in the 60's. He was a horse of the year in Europe and a champion as a 3 yr. old and 4 yr. old before he was injured and retired to stud.
All good stuff Opti. Again, tell your brother from one horseman to another, good luck and she looks fantastic !
They called it In Limbo
Had it's first barrier trial last week. Won it to qualify for a biggish race at the Brisbane Magic Million carnival next month.

That is a real nice race Opti. Relaxed, await commands, fire when asked. Yes, a little tired right at the end it looked like but that is expected. IMO, plenty of room to grow off that effort.,
Looks like a nice horse. Your brother did a real nice job bringing her back mentally as well s physically. A lot to like there.
Oh, and cool name.
