#352True that! You need a good bankroll to start with. Anything under 3.000 $/€/£ makes no sense for me, if you want to straight bet with 2% of your bankroll.
Out of 100 people only 2 will have decipline.
Because of lack in decipline and this implements the ability to take a loss f.e. Vegas and friends are making money.
Problem is patience and discipline. I can have a great week but then there will be one day that my team loses 2-1 and I become frustrated and get very tempted to chase with another play which I normally wouldn't play. You better have a big enough bankroll to withstand rough patches like that. I'm definitively not doing this for a living (as of now) but if I did I'd have to have 6 months of bills paid for in advance (when I move out) and 20 dimes to gamble. Right now I'm a student with no bills and 19k to play with in total...and it's hard because I want to up my wagers because of my lack of patience.
My spreadsheet is so erratic it's not even funny. I go from $100 to $1500 per game.
Have to think long-term and not short term..Comment -

#362Jon - we dont get taxed on winnings here in UK (used to be a 9% levy on horseracing winnings but abolished many moons ago ) but I see what you are saying , It is difficult enough to keep ahead of the bookie without having the tax man waiting for you to bung him too , good point sir !!!!!!!Comment -

#367so much about systems and models and 8900 pages of information to study each day.
anyone just NOT do this and go with their gut because they know all about a sport? mostly talking about soccer, because someone who's watched the sport their whole lives would know about the flow of a match and about the teams. NFL/NBA/CFB is 30 to 100 teams, impossible to follow all the teams all the time, thats where you get THIS ISNT EASY IT'S A 24/7 JOB from.
What if all I did on the weekends was watch EPL/Liga/Bundesliga/MLS and bet accordingly after studying a few things? Not so hard. I think people complicate themselves here.Comment -

#368Wait, it's impossible to follow 30 NFL teams but you can keep on top of EPL / La Liga / Bundesliga / MLS? Does not compute.Comment -

I know where your coming from Col , I only bet Horses and Football (soccer ) and being in Scotland you are correct to say after 40 odd years I dont have to study much on UK / Western Euro main leagues football , but the smaller leagues around the world and horseracing definitely takes up time on form / stats etc , Knowing teams in UK is great advantage yes m8 , but hey I luv the kick I get if I unearth a nice winner from 30 mins of input , dont you bud ? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good Luck folks !!!!!!!Comment -

#370I got two local book and two online books, of course, local books don't get tax and their limit is about high 2k max. I think that would be enough b/c I rarely bet that much for a game.Comment -

FalconBecause no computer model ever breaks down... I agree in principle with the professional mindset of not getting emotionally invested in the win/loss streaks, but if you think that you've found the goose that laid the golden egg in a computer model, you're in for a rough surprise. It's just not that simple.

#381I had two and a half points
1) Just because most people do something that doesn't mean it's a good idea
2) Watching a game is less important than people believe
2.5) If most people watch and lose, and I don't watch, clearly I don't lose.Comment -

they somehow think that the angles their one eyes see will be able to beat the combined wisdom and watching hours of millions that hammer the line into place
whatever you've seen is almost always incorporated into the line plus X number of additional things seen by everyone else. People watching with our human brains, which evolved in simpler establishing patterns to live times, end up over-laying what they think are unique patterns to give themselves what they perceive of as an edge.
My best results are in sports I never watch and hardly understand even.Comment -
