Artemi Panarin with mild groin strain

Artemi Panarin scored a power-play goal, with a total of 3 shots in 12:59 of ice time, but didn't finish his first preseason game with the New York Rangers on Wednesday after he sustained a mild groin strain in a 4-3 loss against New Jersey.

"More precautionary than anything," Rangers coach David Quinn said. "He should be fine. You don't want to risk it during a game like this."

Panarin, who signed a seven-year contract with the Rangers on July 1, finished his last shift with 6:16 remaining in the second period.

Vancouver has been looking sharp in the pre season. I think Vegas has a team this year too.

Dustin Byfuglien granted personal leave by Winnipeg Jets

Dustin Byfuglien has been suspended by the Winnipeg Jets for not reporting to training camp.

The defenseman was granted a personal leave of absence last Friday, the day the Jets opened training camp, and was suspended Saturday.

"It's absolutely procedural and Dustin was aware of it," coach Paul Maurice said.

Byfuglien met with Maurice on Thursday before his leave of absence continued into its second week.

The Jets are also without forwards Patrik Laine and Kyle Connor. Each is a restricted free agent who has not reported to training camp. Laine is training with SC Bern, a professional team in Switzerland.

Byfuglien had 31 points (four goals, 27 assists) in 42 games last season and eight points (two goals, six assists) in six Stanley Cup Playoff games. The 34-year-old missed 15 games from Dec. 31-Feb. 5 because of a lower-body injury and missed 19 from Feb. 16-March 28 because of a different lower-body injury.

Byfuglien is entering his 10th season with the Winnipeg Jets/Atlanta Thrashers after playing his first five NHL seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks. He has 525 points (177 goals, 348 assists) in 869 NHL games.

Brayden Point signed 3-year $20.25 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning

Brayden Point signed a three-year, $20.25 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday, but the forward is expected to miss the start of the regular season after having hip surgery in the spring, general manager Julien BriseBois said.

"At this point, and throughout, it was always projected that he would be cleared to play at some point in late October," BriseBois said. "So even though we are very happy that we were able to get a deal done here and Brayden will be joining the team on Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale, we don't expect him to play in any preseason games. We don't expect him to be ready for the opener.”

Point has been skating for a few weeks, is not expected to have any long-term effects from the surgery, and will wear a no-contact jersey when he joins the Lightning for practice.

Point led the NHL with 20 power-play goals last season.
His 41 total goals were tied with Nikita Kucherov for second on the Lightning behind Steven Stamkos (45), and his 92 points were third behind Kucherov (128) and Stamkos (98). Point's plus-27 rating led Lightning forwards, and he had NHL career highs in goals, assists (51) and points.

Selected by the Lightning in the third round (No. 79) of the 2014 NHL Draft, Point has 198 points (91 goals, 107 assists) in 229 regular-season games and 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) in 21 playoff games.

Leafs' Matthews faces disorderly conduct charge

Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews is facing a disorderly conduct charge after being involved in an incident in May in his hometown of Scottsdale, Arizona.
According to court records, Matthews, 22, is being charged with disruptive behavior or fighting. He has a pretrial conference scheduled for Wednesday morning. The summons was issued July 23.
"The Toronto Maple Leafs are aware of the complaint of disturbing the peace against forward Auston Matthews," the Maple Leafs said in a statement released Tuesday. "Auston is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities, but neither he nor the Club will comment any further out of respect for the process involved."
According to the police report obtained by ESPN, the incident occurred May 26 at 2 a.m. local time. A female security guard was sitting inside her car outside the condo building where Matthews lives when she was disturbed by the sound of someone trying to open her door. She allegedly got out of her car and confronted Matthews, who she said he was intoxicated.
As Matthews walked away, he "pulled his pants down, bent over and grabbed his butt cheeks," though he kept on his underwear, the woman told police.
Matthews signed a five-year, $58.17 million contract extension with the Maple Leafs in February. He was the top draft pick of Toronto in 2016, becoming the seventh American to be drafted No. 1 overall. He was born in California and raised in Arizona.

                                      Calgary Flames re-sign Matthew Tkachuk

Matthew Tkachuk signed a three-year, $21 million contract with the Calgary Flames on Wednesday. It has an average annual value of $7 million.

Tkachuk, who was a restricted free agent, had NHL career highs in goals (34), assists (43) and points (77) in 80 games with the Flames last season, and had three points (two goals, one assist) in five Stanley Cup Playoff games. The 21-year-old forward is the youngest player in Flames history to reach 100 points in the NHL.

Selected by Calgary with the No. 6 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft, Tkachuk has 174 points (71 goals, 103 assists) in 224 regular-season games and three points in nine playoff games for the Flames.

Sidney Crosby is day to day after blocking a shot with leg

Sidney Crosby is day to day for the Pittsburgh Penguins with an undisclosed injury.

The center was hit in the leg by a shot from Buffalo Sabres defenseman Marco Scandella after playing 6:42 in the first period of Pittsburgh's preseason finale Saturday and did not play the final two periods. Though Sullivan said the captain's status is encouraging, he did not address Crosby's availability for the season opener against the Sabres at PPG Paints Arena on Thursday.

Winnipeg Jets re-sign Kyle Connor to 7-year contract

Kyle Connor agreed to a seven-year, $49.98 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets on Saturday. It has an average annual value of $7.14 million.

"We get two years of unrestricted free agency and if you look at the terms of contracts these days, a lot of players are opting for short-term deals to maybe get back to the marketplace and do some different things in that regard," general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff said Sunday. "When you get an opportunity to get a young player like that, get his prime years all locked up and two years of unrestricted free agency, that was something that was real appealing to us."

The 22-year-old restricted free agent forward had NHL career highs in goals (34), assists (32) and points (66) in 82 games with the Jets last season. He had five points (three goals, two assists) in six Stanley Cup Playoff games.

Selected by Winnipeg in the first round (No. 17) of the 2015 NHL Draft, Connor has 128 points (67 goals, 61 assists) in 178 regular-season games and 15 points (six goals, nine assists) in 23 playoff games.

Connor led rookies in goals (31) and finished fourth in points (57) in 2017-18.

"We don't ask Kyle to run guys over," Maurice told the website. "We ask him to get the puck stopped on the forecheck. If you can get in there and create a loose puck, then whoever is playing with him gets an opportunity to be a second quicker and we get possession. Well, at that speed and with that stick, that happens. It just happens a lot."
