Mariners trade for Twins DH Kendrys Morales
The Mariners acquired DH Kendrys Morales in a trade with the Twins Thursday. Seattle sent pitcher Stephen Pryor to Minnesota in exchange for the veteran slugger.

Morales heads to Seattle having hit safely in 12 of his last 13 games. However, he is batting just .234 with one home run and 18 RBI in 39 games since joining the Twins' lineup June 9.
Morales played for Seattle in 2013, batting .277 with 23 home runs and 80 RBI in 156 games. He has a .287 average, 19 home runs and 69 RBI in 117 games in his career at Safeco Field.

    Seattle does need hitters.

The Detroit Tigers had seen enough from their shaky bullpen to know something had to be done. So the AL Central leaders acquired right-hander Joakim Soria. "Obviously, I'm excited to have Joakim on the team," manager Brad Ausmus said Thursday before the Tigers began a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels. "Anytime you can get help of his caliber, especially at the back end of the bullpen, I don't think there would be a manager who wouldn't be excited about it."
Detroit dealt pitching prospects Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson to the Texas Rangers to get the 30-year-old Soria on Wednesday night.

There was some chatter earlier this week that the Mariners want to trade for Starling Marte.

Sorry, Seattle, but that ain't happening!

This Ernesto Frieri guy has got to go! Fukking guy is a disgrace!

Why in the hell does Hurdle keep giving him the ball? May well be the worst pitcher in baseball right now!

Ok, I feel a little better now...

Peavy really hasn't pitched as bad as his record looks, he hasn't received much run support this year.

Nice pick up for the Giants, in my opinion. Peavy knows that division very well...

Ian Kennedy won't pitch Monday due to oblique injury
Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy was scratched from his start Monday against the Braves due to left oblique soreness. However, no stint on the disabled list will be required.

Vince Worley tosses an absolute gem against the Giants out on the left coast tonight!

Report: Baseball execs anticipating trade of Jon Lester
Rival executives are expecting the Red Sox to trade ace Jon Lester before the deadline, according to ESPN, which is further reporting that the most likely destination is the Dodgers.

The defending World Series champions have all but fallen out of playoff contention. The value of Lester has arguably never been higher. He not only owns a 10-7 record and career-best 2.52 ERA, but he has also won his last four decisions and allowed a mere seven runs in his last 58 2/3 innings.

Jon Lester scratched Wednesday, Brandon Workman to start
Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester has been scratched from Wednesday's scheduled start, the Springfield Republican reports.

Lester's name has been involved in trade talks as the deadline nears, and the Red Sox have decided to hold him out Wednesday, which will avoid the chance he's injured while also leave him available to pitch for a new team if he is traded. Brandon Workman will take Lester's scheduled start Wednesday.

                                                      • Sources say talks between the Pirates and Phillies about an A.J. Burnett reunion in Pittsburgh are all but dead, largely because the Pirates have been unable to get assurances that Burnett won't pick up his player option for next season, which could pay him as much as $14.25 million if he makes 32 starts. The Phillies have been telling other clubs they expect Burnett to retire. And Burnett has told teammates the same thing. But the Pirates aren't willing to take a gamble that expensive. As an executive of another team put it, "He keeps saying he's going to retire. But he said that last year, too."

It would have been nice to land Lester, but I'd hate to see what the Pirates would have had to give up for him...

Carter is batting .212 with 111 strikeouts in 92 games, but he has 21 homers and is slugging .474. The Post reports the Astros would also be willing to listen to trade offers for starting pitchers Jarred Cosart, Dallas Keuchel and Collin McHugh.
