    Pre-preseason previews
MLB Spring Training a month away

Believe it or not, pitchers and catchers report in about a month. No time like the present, as they say, as we begin a pre-preseason march through Major League Baseball.

The itch started a couple of weeks back actually. It progressed from a small rash on my brain to an irritation in my gut to a full-fledged inflammation throughout my entire body.

When I went to my doctor he told me, "Pitchers and catchers don't report for another month. Until then, take two martinis while watching college basketball and call me in April if it hasn't gone away."

Yeah, baseball. I'm jonesing for the game. Super Bowl XYZ90201 or whatever number it is can't get here soon enough. That game is like a second New Year's Eve to me because I know it will be a new year, a new baseball season, when I wake up the next morning.

College hoops is just heating up while NFL season is reaching its climax. The NBA and NHL guys play on until like August, right? And then football starts all over again. Still, it's never a wrong time for baseball and that means a pre-preseason preview.

Futures are going to take forever to get here. I do love to play some World Series and pennant winners, but the win totals that I really like to indulge are a good month away offshore, maybe a little sooner than that in Vegas. The numbers I'm going to work off for this series of quick team previews come from Bodog and are odds to win the 2010 World Series.

    Bodog Jan 19, 2010
    New York Yankees 11/4
    Boston Red Sox 11/2
    Philadelphia Phillies 11/2
    Los Angeles Dodgers 12/1
    St. Louis Cardinals 13/1
    Los Angeles Angels 14/1
    New York Mets 15/1
    San Francisco Giants 16/1
    Atlanta Braves 18/1
    Chicago Cubs 18/1
    Colorado Rockies 18/1
    Seattle Mariners 18/1

    Texas Rangers 20/1
    Florida Marlins 25/1
    Minnesota Twins 25/1
    Detroit Tigers 27/1
    Tampa Bay Rays 27/1
    Chicago White Sox 30/1
    Milwaukee Brewers 40/1
    Cincinnati Reds 45/1
    Arizona Diamondbacks 50/1

    Cleveland Indians 60/1
    Oakland Athletics 70/1
    Houston Astros 75/1
    Kansas City Royals 75/1
    San Diego Padres 75/1
    Baltimore Orioles 100/1
    Toronto Blue Jays 100/1
    Pittsburgh Pirates 125/1
    Washington Nationals 125/1

Note that I've divvied the group up into three easy-to-follow groups: Teams listed 18/1 or better right now, teams listed 20/1 to 50/1 presently, and the thanks for playing, Don Pardo tell them about our parting gifts group in the 60/1 to 125/1 range.

I'll be looking at a team from each group for nine articles, with the 10th and final consisting of three of the top-tier teams. My editorial privilege allows me to make sure my beloved Houston Astros will be included in this first writing. By the time I finish the series you will have forgotten everything I said about the Astros, and for good reason.

    New York Mets 15/1
    2009 record/finish: 70-92, 4th in NL East
Departing: 1B Carlos Delgado, LF Gary Sheffield, RHP J.J. Putz
Arriving: OF Jason Bay, RHP Kelvim Escobar
2010 outlook: I will be performing my annual jinx on the Mets soon, but am waiting on some longer odds before I do place a futures bet on the bunch from Queens. Must be a bunch of idiots like me ready to plunk down money to list them at the present number.

GM Omar Minaya thought the team was just a bullpen away from October baseball, and he was wrong. Francisco Rodriguez had a rather bloated ERA in 2009 and Putz was never healthy. Speaking of healthy, a lot of the team went down on the injured list that led to the 70-win season last year.

But expecting them all to bounce back and everything to fall into place for a 90-win season, which is the minimum for a team I'd give you 15/1 on, that's stretching it. Bringing in Bay is good, re-signing Jeff Francoeur could be good, getting a healthy Jose Reyes, Carlos Beltran, Johan Santana and John Maine back for 2010 all have to happen for this team to be a true force into the postseason.

My pick: 85 wins, 3rd in the NL East

    Tampa Bay Rays 27/1
    2009 record/finish: 84-78, 3rd in AL East
    Departing: None, yet.
    Arriving: RHP Rafael Soriano
2010 outlook: This is roughly the same team that ended the season last year in St. Pete with the addition of Soriano to presumably close. The Rays had already dealt Scott Kazmir away before the end of the season to the Angels, and they are still reportedly trying to unload Pat Burrell on some unsuspecting GM while talking to Jim Thome's agent about coming aboard.

They should continue to try and deal Burrell, leave Thome alone and find a bargain fourth outfielder, if you ask me. Neither Andrew Friedman nor Gerry Hunsicker have asked me, by the way.

It was silly to think Tampa Bay could repeat its magic from 2008. Baseball's two biggest obstacles are in the Rays' way in the form of the Yankees and Red Sox, so it will pretty much take a magical season to unseat at least one again. If Soriano can finally shore up the closer's role, if David Price can take the next step into stardom and if Carlos Peña can rebound from his performance of Rob Deer, the magic can return.

My pick: 87 wins, 3rd in AL East

    Houston Astros 75/1
    2009 record/finish: 74-88, 5th in NL Central
Departing: SS Miguel Tejada, RHP Jose Valverde, RHP LaTroy Hawkins
Arriving: 3B Pedro Feliz, RHP Brett Myers, RHP Brandon Lyon, RHP Matt Lindstrom
2010 outlook: The Astros followed up their surprising 86-win 2008 season with a putrid 74 wins last year, and my guess is we will see 72-75 wins this year. If everything fell into place, yes, they could be a wild card contender. But they have at least two teams in the Cardinals and Cubs to beat out in the division; four if you include the Reds and Brewers who, on paper at least, stack up better than Houston.

The bullpen has been rebuilt with Lindstrom and Lyon the backend guys. Myers comes on to add to what could be a decent rotation headed by Roy Oswalt and Wandy Rodriguez. The scary part is the pitching staff actually appears deeper than the other eight positions on the field.

Maybe Feliz fools me and Minute Maid is just the park for him. Maybe J.R. Towles comes on as a catcher with Tommy Manzella at short. And maybe, just maybe, the lack of tested outfield depth at this point won't ever be a problem with Carlos Lee, Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn all staying healthy and putting for the fantastic seasons.

The best news here really is I don't see them any worse off than they were entering '09, plus they get some draft picks for Valvomit, er, Valverde signing with the Tigers.

My pick: 72 wins, 5th in NL Central

The Mets still might sign Delgado. Beltran out for first month of season already.

Giants, Rangers look to play in October

How can you not like Tim Lincecum? Maybe if you're an opposing batter. And how can you not like the Rangers in the AL West this season? Maybe if you hate Dallas like me.

Let me get this out of the way since it's eating at me. And I promise, it is the first and only time this season I'm even going to mention steroids and PEDs...that is until the first knucklehead goes and tests positive for using them.

I've got all the respect in the world for Carlton Fisk, and always have. I completely agree with him and others about Mark McGwire's crocodile tears and apologies at this stage of the whole mess. But moaning and bitching about it now ain't gonna' do a thing.

Fisk and Jack Clark and other former players should've been at the forefront when the whole business of steroids and PEDs was in its heyday. They were watching the same games, either on the field or on TV, that myself and millions of other fans were watching. We suspected it and went right on cheering.

The former players should've been pressuring Bud Selig and Donald Fehr then, not pitching a fit now. Where was Senator Jim Bunning in the 1990s? And please, don't tell me he was in Washington looking out for my interests while serving in Congress. I've been following Congress longer than Bunning's been there -- Hell, I used to go watch the man pitch -- and one thing I know is the US Congress hasn't ever been looking out for my interests while in session.

Let it go, Carlton. Let it go, Jack Clark. I feel your pain about how these suckers have amassed fortunes and now want us to feel sorry for them because of the mistakes they made. I earned $640 a month once as a service hand in the oilfield, and they're all making a lot more than that now. You don't hear me crying about it now, do you?

Let's move on to the damn game, shall we? Here are three teams that break down into two that are looking to take that next step into the postseason this season, and the third being the Nationals in Washington in honor of Senator Bunning, baseball and all that is good about the United States Congress. Can I get an amen on that, brothers and sisters?

                                          San Francisco Giants 16/1
                                          2009 record/finish: 88-74, 3rd in NL West
Departing: RHP Brad Penny, OF Randy Winn, LHP Randy Johnson, RHP Bob Howry
Arriving: UTL Aubrey Huff, UTL Mark DeRosa
2010 outlook: I really want to like this team to finish on top of the division, but I can't quite bring myself to making that decision right now.

Let's start with the presumed meat of the lineup. DeRosa is in left batting fifth, Huff is at first batting fourth, and Sandoval is at third while batting third. Not bad, but it's basically three guys who for the most part have proven their value by being versatile. Bringing back Bengie Molina will help, having solid veterans like Aaron Rowand and Edgar Renteria will also be a good thing. But if you have to start relying on Juan Uribe, Eugenio Velez and Travis Ishikawa for prolonged stretches, that's where I get scared.

Bruce Bochy surely isn't afraid with the meat of this rotation coming back, headed by Tim Lincecum and followed by Matt Cain, Jonathan Sanchez and Barry Zito. And the entire last two innings for the bullpen is back in Brian Wilson, Brandon Medders and Jeremy Affeldt. Watch Sergio Romo in the 6th-7th innings, and wait for news on who is the best guy for the fifth starter's role. That's key because we shouldn't expect the first four in the rotation to each make 32+ starts again this season.

My pick: 86-76, 3rd in the NL West

                                          Texas Rangers 20/1
                                          2009 record/finish: 87-75, 2nd in AL West
Departing: OF Andruw Jones, OF, Marlon Byrd, RHP Kevin Millwood
Arriving: OF Vladimir Guerrero, RHP Rich Harden, RHP Chris Ray
2010 outlook: Just as I like to put a disclaimer out on the Astros when I speak of them since they're my favorite team, I need to also post one about the Rangers. It's not that I hate the Rangers, it's just that I've long had a strong distaste for anything Dallas, and the Rangers are close enough to Big D to qualify.

With that out of the way, I love just about everything there is about Nolan Ryan, and the ol' Texan is going to build this franchise into a winner. Hide and watch.

There's still not enough pitching for my taste to put a bunch of hard-earned dough on them to win the Series, but making the playoffs might be a different story for me when I do buy some futures in the near future. Perhaps Harden will finally have a full healthy season, but I ain't countin' on it. So it's going to be up to Scott Feldman, Tommy Hunter and Derek Holland to toe the line in the rotation.

The bullpen could be a gem if Frankie Francisco really settles into the closer's role. There are some excellent guys fronting him in C.J. Wilson and Darren O'Day, and I'm banking on newly arrived Chris Ray rebounding in the seventh-inning role.
The offense should be just fine, as along as Chris Davis can figure out the strike zone. I expect this team to improve from seventh in the AL in scoring all the way into the Top 4 of the league.

My pick: 91 wins, 1st or 2nd in AL West

                                          Washington Nationals 125/1
                                          2009 record/finish: 59-103, 5th in NL East
Departing: Not really anyone except their 2B late last season
Arriving: RHP Matt Caps, RHP Jason Marquis
2010 outlook: After rambling too long about Fisk, the Giants and Rangers, I've got to keep the Nats report short and sweet. So here it is: They aren't going anywhere. It will take the complete collapse of one of the other NL East teams for Washington to avoid another cellar season. Not that such an event isn't possible. But 70 wins and a fourth-place finish would be a successful season for this club.

Marquis is the stop-gap to getting Stephen Strasburg into the mix in front of Jordan Zimmermann, Craig Stammen and John Lannan. This could be a fun little offense to watch with Nyjer Morgan setting the table in front of Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Dunn.

But the team is going nowhere this season. Might as well be a bazillion to one to win the World Series.

My pick: 65 wins, 5th in NL East

The 5th spot for the Giants is Madison Bumgarner's to lose.

But I hate to break this to you as well as to Cubs fans: I will put the big voodoo doodoo on both the Metropolitans and the Cubbies when I buy a futures ticket on each. Fifty bucks seems like such a small price to pay to watch a frustrated franchise have another October-less season
