2024 NASCAR All-Star Race predictions, expert picks

If you're just looking to bet on the likeliest winner, it's hard to go wrong with Denny Hamlin (+550 via BetMGM). He's arguably the hottest driver in the Cup Series with odds implying a 15.38% chance that he'll win on Sunday, per our odds converter.

The No. 11 has won three of the last nine races and three straight top-fives, all of which came on short tracks like North Wilkesboro—including that epic battle in Bristol that fueled the tire changes for this race. If Sunday's exhibition is another "tire management race," as Hamlin says, I like his chances indeed.

Still, in a non-points race where most of the top favorites' salaries far exceed Sunday's purse, it's hard to lay the shortest odds on the field on anyone. That's especially true when Kyle Larson (+900 via bet365) - who led 145 of 200 laps last year to win his third All-Star Race in five years - is dealing at nearly twice the price.

The only reason Larson is dealing at these odds is because he's busy qualifying for the Indy 500, with recently retired Kevin Harvick taking his place in qualifying for this race. As Larson has said this week, "just tell me where to be ... and we'll go." I wouldn't bet him as the favorite, but this price is pretty tough to ignore for the best driver in the field.

Another twist for betting this race: the repaved track at North Wilkesboro Speedway. Only three drivers in the field took part in a tire test there in March: William Byron (+625 via Caesars), Joey Logano (+1000 via Caesars), and Ty Gibbs, last week's runner-up at Darlington who hasn't yet qualified for this race.

I think Byron and Logano have a decent shot, but I'd much rather bet Gibbs, who can technically be bet as "any All-Star Open participant" (+2000 via bet365).

He's the clear favorite to win that race, and I'm not sure he'll catch such long odds for the main race if he does qualify for it. This bet also includes any other qualifier and will ultimately cover three drivers, so I'd definitely recommend grabbing this catch-all wager while keeping an eye on Gibbs' standalone odds if he qualifies.

2024 NASCAR All-Star Open predictions, expert picks

Ty Gibbs (+250 via FanDuel) is the best driver in this field. He's one of my picks to win the All-Star Race even before he qualifies, so of course I think he's got a great shot to win at these +250 odds, which imply a 28.57% chance that he'll win.

I wouldn't stake too much on that bet, though, or really any bet for an exhibition race - especially at such short odds. If you're looking for a driver with a little more ROI, Alex Bowman (+750 via Caesars) finished fourth in that crazy race at Bristol - which could serve as a preview for high-wear tires at this short track - and his No. 48 team won the All-Star Open with Josh Berry in last year's race.

North Wilkesboro track analysis

Long revered for its association with moonshining, the 0.625-mile oval based in North Wilkesboro, N.C., was one of NASCAR's original tracks and a staple on the Cup Series schedule until 1996 - the last time NASCAR raced there for nearly three decades.

North Wilkesboro Speedway, repaved for the first time since 1981, returned as the host of the All-Star Race in 2023. While this renovation bodes well for the track's longevity, it creates uncertainty about what to expect from the drivers this weekend.

A few drivers who might know? William Byron, Joey Logano, and Ty Gibbs, who all tested the repaved surface in March. That's why we like one of those drivers to win one (and potentially two) of the races on Sunday night.

NASCAR All-Star Race format, rules

North Wilkesboro will host a series of races culminating in the All-Star Race, when 20 top drivers will compete in a 200-lap showcase on Sunday night, one of the premier events on the NASCAR schedule.

Seventeen drivers have already clinched a spot in the All-Star race by winning a points race in either 2023 or 2024, a previous All-Star Race, or a Cup championship. The other three spots will be determined in Sunday's All-Star Open, a 100-lap sprint where the top two finishers will join the All-Star Fan Vote winner in the 20-driver field.

The starting grid for the All-Star Race will be determined by two 60-lap heat races on Saturday night (5:40 p.m. ET). Similarly, the starting lineup for those heats will be set based on the results of the Pit Crew Challenge on Friday night (6:20 p.m. ET), with the winner earning pole position for Heat 1 and the All-Star Race.

One key change to this year's race? A fresh set of tires ... literally.

Each team will have nine sets of tires at its disposal—five sets of "prime" tires developed by Goodyear for the newly repaved North Wilkesboro track and four sets of softer "option" tires with quicker speeds but faster wear. Drivers must start with option tires and make a pit stop for four tires halfway through each race.

That should lead to some added strategy and intrigue as we saw in that thrilling race at Bristol Motor Speedway on March 17, which ultimately led to this new twist for All-Star Weekend.
