So here in So Cal, we don't get many homeless people walking down the streets begging for money, unless your in downtown San Diego. But here is my story followed up with an opinion.
I went to In n Out with some friends around 1pm and place was busy. Old homeless man standing outside and not looking so well. My pity ran behind my spine so instead of giving him money, I wanted to do the right thing and order him a complete combo meal. When I got done ordering it, I gave him his receipt and told him when they called his number to go in and get it. I thought I did the most noble thing in his life. When he saw the receipt, the guy did not understand and rather get the money instead of being saturated with food. So when they called his number, he went inside, got his meal and stood outside and tried to sell it to people entering in the restaurant. I was dinning outside in the benches and witness this so I went to him and told him that I bought him his food so he can eat it because that's what money is suppose to be used for. And he told me that he didn't want it and wanted money instead. We argued and I told him that that was my money and I get to decided what to do with it because I worked hard for it. At this point, I grab everybody's attention who was dinning outside too. At the end, the homeless guy gave me back his food and walk away. I've never been so insulted in my entire life after that.
Couple of weeks later in my hometown as I was putting gas, some bum comes up to me and ask me for some change. So I tell him, "If you are thirsty or want some food, we can both go inside and get you something to eat otherwise I won't suppose anything else". The bum hesitated and then said, "well I gotta be honest. All I really want is some booz to drink". I replied, "well I gotta be honest, I don't support that because it's my money". Bum walked away with a failed face.
My opinion on supporting these type of people; I don't have time to do charity or walk into a shelter and donate in what I believe in but out in the streets to the ones who don't look for homeless shelter or programs and ask for my money will encounter that the only thing I support is watching them eat the food I buy them. We all know that bums and homeless people just want to drink alcohol and well the more we encourage that with our money the more they won't change. Now when I get approach by these beings, my only response now is; "sorry, I only have my CC on me.Better luck next time". Please, don't waste my time.
