Safe Browsing is better ofcourse (not clicking random ads. opening suspicious attachments in spam etc. )

I used to work in system troubleshooting and virus cleaning in the past.
Heres what I would highly recommend:

      1. Do windows update every 2 weeks.
      2. You can ignore/uninstall, inbuilt firewall/antivirus programs cuz they can slow you down or cause excessive popups for confirmation
      3. DO NOT use internet explorer - this is the most important and i cannot stress it enough.
      4. mozilla firefox is recommend - get an add on called "ad block plus" and use the "easy USA" or standard list that comes with it.
      5. get "spybot search and destroy" - update it and use the "immunize" feature - do it every 2 weeks. apart from that disable all other active services from this program.
      6. Get CCleaner - run the cleaner and reg cleaner frequently.

If you really want to have an antivirus software ( and be willing to bog down some memory and speed),
Kaspersky Software is probably the best out there IMHO.

and if your looking for something very light and pretty good protection. get the free Avast! antivirus. This is what i personally use. only settings u might need to change is disable the sounds from automatic stuff such as updates.

      Other stuff for speed :

CCleaner - uninstall all unncessary programs/toolbars etc.
CCleaner - startup items - disable non essential items.
      Complete defrag once a month.

      Good luck

firefox, get the extensions "no scripts" and "better privacy" which prevent scripts and flash cookies respectively (takes a bit of tweaking)...a cookie manager, use comodo firewall (read a tutorial), and cc cleaner, spybot search and destroy, avira antivirus. All depends how much ram you have....good luck

go to cnet.com; click downlaods, and download "revo uninstaller" then run it, find kaspersky, do an advanced uninstall, remove EVERYTHING, select all of the registry items it finds, all of it, then delete at each step. Reboot. PM me if you need more info. GL man

norton internet security works good, and doesn't slow the computer down. I run it on my netbook faster than the microsoft essentials that came preinstalled on the netbook. Find a free after rebate deal and you'll have good security at a good price

There are some great tools available for PC users, most of which are free. I use Avira now but used to use AVG. I actually prefer AVG for its ability to spot bad pages from the listings that Google returns with your searches but Avira ranks better in false-positives (meaning it produced fewer false positives). Either of them are good and make Norton and Symantec look like the pieces of crap they actually are. Good luck!

There are differing levels of security based on paranoia. The sad fact is that a talented hacker can pretty much cut through all security like butter if they want to. That's not an excuse to let things slide but just something you have to be conscious of.

Here are the basics of what I do

A)Start with yourself. A lot of problems stem from user behavior. Don't download torrents et al, porn, open weird e-mail attachments. If you must I would suggest a separate computer from the one you use for financial affairs/work.
                                              B) Firefox with noscript,adblockplus,wot
                                              C) Run as limited user on windows 7 unless I have to install some program I am sure is safe
                                              D) Malwarebytes, AVIRA, Windows Defender run once a week
                                              E) Make sure all programs are up to date and check once a week
                                              F) Zonealarm + Router

                                              Also this may help:

Norton Internet Security and Tuneup. But for the level of computer skills shown here in the Saloon, get an 16GB Ipad 2 Wifi. That way you've got more money to gamble away.

AV is no guarantee of protection, they are continuously updated because hackers are constantly finding ways to avoid them. The safest thing you can do is to not download and run .exe files from anywhere you don't trust completely, also .scr and .com files work the same way as an .exe file, so again don't run them unless you trust the source %100.

Having said that an AV can help, just don't assume you are bulletproof because of it.

                                                              Good luck
