The IRS is obliged to ensure taxpayers pay what they should.
What kind of precedent would it create if they are stopped from doing what they need to ensure compliance?
The correct way to proceed would be to change the tax code so that tips are exempted, not stopping the IRS from ensuring compliance with tax laws.Comment -

#10436Of course the right thing for SS to do was to formally apologize and tell her they would clean up any mess and make it right. What else do you expect them to do? Sounds like a miscommunication not SS trying to take advantage of some helpless woman. They typically get permission and her own words said she let them in her shop. Not sure why you would be upset? I don’t see them taking away her freedom.

#10443I know both parties love to hype up shit but why shouldn't we tax tips?? Isn't tips income? Some folks working in high level restaurants/bars make well above 6 figures in tips per year. Why shouldn't they be taxed? I'm so tired of the political BS. Income is income and should be taxed the same for all.
Just do the math. For a 7-hour shift, they're down -$70 to -$105. $20 an hour in tips, after taking out the bartender's 20% cut, they're making anywhere from $1 to $6 an hour after taxes.Comment -

#10446It's not our job to explain why something shouldn't be, the burden of proof is on the person wanting to do something, in this case, tax tips. Explain why we're better off when tips are taxed. Next time you're in Las Vegas, ask your cocktail server how much they're taxed per hour. I asked a couple of them back when Trump first proposed eliminating taxes on tips and they said they're making -$10 to -$15 an hour without tips.

WTF? This is just another way for the rich to get richer. Low income service industry workers aren't paying much tax anyway but the wealthy folks that make hundreds of thousands of dollars in tips would basically not pay any tax. You don't think wise guys will just move wages into tips to avoid taxes. We already have a massive debt problem. Now you want some citizens to NOT pay tax? Do you realize you are talking of a couple hundred billion of dollars the government would lose. Why not just exempt people working in the auto industry or oil n gas. Yeah, let's just let them not pay any tax too. This country is becoming more and more a freeloader society. Everyone wants something for nothing and no one wants to pay their fair share. If you earn a wage, you should have to report it and if you make a certain amount of money, you should have to pay taxes.Comment -

#10447I'm not following you. If you earn less than $13,850 a year, you pay NO TAX and don't even have to file a tax return. If the waitress makes $10k, she would pay zero tax and get reimbursed for any taxes paid the IRS. Now, if that same bartender makes $100k in tips, why should they not pay taxes???

Who do you know is rich and makes a significant amount of their living from tips? The IRS defines tips as being determined by the customer.Tips are discretionary (optional or extra) payments determined by a customer that employees receive from customers.
Your position is you lose $10 - $15 an hour is fair? That's on top of what they're paid per hour by their employer. Bartenders are being taxed $15-$30 an hour and you're calling them freeloaders because they want a break.Comment -

#10448The problem is that some are working full time and their family is on food stamps because they're taxed at such a high rate. Yes, I was told that in the past month by a tipped worker.

Yeah, I'm sure those rich entertainers will just say pay me what you want and it will be tax-free. We have a massive debt problem because the politicians do a horrible job with the money we send in. All levels of government spending per capita in America is over $2,000 a month, and we still have all these problems. Are full-time workers in the auto industry taxed at such a high rate that they are on food stamps after the government gets its cut? If so, then they should have a tax cut as well.

But the bigger issue is that the super wealthy and corporations aren't being taxed anywhere near enough thanks to the Trump tax cut and now he's talking of reducing their tax further.Comment -

The problem isn't that the super-wealthy and corporations aren't taxed enough, they're overtaxed. If corporations don't have to pay any taxes, that money doesn't cease to exist, it goes either to the shareholder, who will spend it, the customer, who will have more money to spend, or the worker, who will have more money to spend.
The problem is that the politicians do such a poor job with the money we send them. Like in my example above, I talked to a server within the past month who is working full-time, is married with 2 kids, and is getting taxed at such a high amount, hundreds of dollars per bi-weekly check that she and her family are on food stamps. Her kids just went back to school, where they'll spend 13 years and have around $170,000 spent on them in that time, and when they graduate high school, they'll have no hard skills to get them a good job unless there's major education reform. They will know a lot about Shakespeare, though, because politicians are just trying to get as many votes as possible, not do what's best for America.Comment -

#10451That's what the workers tell me. They start every hour -$10 to -$15. They're also paid by their employer, but I don't know the actual dollar amount. If they're paid $6 an hour + tips, then to be -$10 to -$15, they'd be taxed at $16-$21 an hour.

totally false
the shareholders in the main are the super wealthy
just take a look at how much wealthier the billionaires have become since 2017 compared to the working classes
You pay taxes to subsidize tax cuts for others. Namely businesses. Warren Buffett said “If 800 other (top) companies had done the same thing (pay their share of taxes), no other person in the United States would have had to pay a dime of federal taxes, whether income taxes, no social security taxes, no estate taxes.” But there are always business tax cuts being put forward. Large business tax cuts only benefit shareholders. Small business tax cuts help out owners. As most businesses want to pay you the lowest negotiated wage. Now imagine if you taxed places of worship on top of businesses. Individual taxes would look different. Yes, things would get more expensive. Because businesses need to reach sales/profit goals for their shareholders/owners. Not to mention a lot to what you buy isn’t even made in this country anymore. Paying for tax cuts for large businesses that employ fewer Americans. You’re paying taxes for someone else’s job overseas.
and those tax numbers you quote can't possibly be accurate but I can't be bothered spending the time looking up the rates and will leave it to someone else to debunk it for youLast edited by Hareeba!; 08-13-24, 03:20 AM.Comment -

First, the money that is taken out of every check is not you “paying your taxes” it’s actually tax withholdings, which simply means that your employer withholds some of your money and sends it to the IRS. Then, at the end of the year, you fill out your tax return and if they withheld too much, you get a tax REFUND. You paid your taxes all year but you paid too much, so you get a little back.
The amount that is withheld is determined by information on your w-4 form, which you filled out when you got hired. You can request a new w-4 form, adjust it and they will withhold less money. That being said, if they withhold too little, you won’t get a tax refund next year, you’ll get a tax bill.
So when you take cash home every night, there’s no withholdings on that money, so more money has to withheld from your hourly rate. You’re getting paid $15/hr, but money is sent to the IRS. You’ve got to pay your taxes.
The second and more important point is that if you take home cash every night, you need to record every dollar and compare it to your paystub numbers. Because you aren’t declaring it yourself, ie typing it into the POS, you need to make sure it’s accurate. There should be a line item “tips” or “tipped wages” or “gratuities” and that number has to match (or be less than) what you took home during the pay period. If the paystub number is too high, it means you’re paying taxes on income you didn’t receive. Start a google doc or smartphone note and write down every dollar you walk with.
If you’re in the “next tax bracket” you only pay the higher rate on the number of dollars above the threshold. It’s marginal. That said, tax brackets don’t have much to do with withholdings, that’s just your w-4 form.Comment -

You obviously have never sat in a boardroom. I've sat in several. There is very little trickle down. Corporations buy back their stocks, line their pockets and pay out their executives millions of dollars. Meanwhile, they decide to cut US jobs and send them to Asia and India where they can get cheap labor. I've heard CEOs say, "We can hire 40 of them for what it cost us 1 US worker". So yes, workers in the Philippines have more money to spend, while US workers get fukkked.Comment -

I totally agree we have a debt problem. So, why do you want to make it worse with this? Politicians on both sides make promises they know the bill will be paid later. This topic is one of them. Promise a handful of people (service people of which we're talking about just 3% of the population) to not tax them, when in reality more than half of these workers don't pay taxes anyway. Then allow a loophole for the wealthy to exploit, which will cause $200 Billion in excess debt per year. Why wouldn't Taylor Swift just get paid in tips at her tens of millions of dollars concerts.Comment -

#10462Trumps grandaddy was an immigrant. This country was built on immigrants. We need immigrant talent to move forward innovation. Elon Musk is a fukking immigrant. Silicon Valley is all immigrants. The sad truth is that our kids are too dumb to create, invent. Very few are going for masters and PhDs. So companies have to import talent from elsewhere. This country has outpaced every other company because we've welcomed immigrants. Trump understands this but also knows he can play both sides by stoking fear.Comment -
