Fats, you were right. Great and more believable than the Hollywood version of fighting Gladiators.
Amazon had it rated 4.1, nonsense, we need more historical appearing, and more believable movies like this one.
A ***** and there is no doubt.
Great acting--and what a surprise--from friends Aflect and Damon.
Ridley Scoot just keeps going on and on, proving his genius again and again.
The setting for the 14 century was as realistic as you could get to seeing people and the surroundings of that century.
No glittering gold appeared here, like Gladiator. Dark and dreary was this more accurate depiction and it makes a far better entertainment for me.
4 bucks on Amazon.
* And I still do not know if the lady enjoyed the rape or lied that she didn't?
I was guessing she was innocent of all charges?

Well, the psychology of her disappointments with her crude husband seemed to point to that being true.
But, the most realistic depiction was the last one where she definitely fought a very believable fight to not be raped. And her emotions sure seemed to be the same too, as it was happening and afterward, also.
And if she enjoyed it why stick you neck out against this powerful establishment that didn't respect her or her dad?
I think Scott wanted to leave you believing it was a mystery?
And yes, the blonde hair sure seemed to be the proof that it was her husband's son.
Abby, have you seen Jaws? You will never go in the water again. You won’t even take a shower.

May be an unpopular opinion but why are movie critics even a thing anymore?
I just guide myself by popular review and score for these things, or not even check and just watch what I feel like.
I understand there must be essays for movie schools and etc. but still...
To be honest I haven't been to the cinema in years, I can find most of what I want to watch online somewhere anyways.

Reviewers will never sway me one way or another as to whether or not I want to pay for a movie.
If I want to see something on a wide screen as opposed to my big screen set at home I'm going to go pay for it at Loew's or wherever.
1) Some motion pictures are 1000 times better experienced on a wide screen, not all, but some.
2) A movie critic will never talk me out of seeing I want to see but, I want to read his or her column for deeper insight before I go. Sort of like a professional *ethical* baseball handicapper will never talk me down off a bet I want to bet, but I'll read for their insights.
Case in point, last month I paid to see Spielberg's "West Side Story'
a) I was curious as to see what Spielberg was going to do with that greatest love story of the modern era.
b) In my younger days I was a musician, a horn player, and I have a passion for musical productions, and I believe Bernstein was the greatest arranger of our time.
c) That's a movie if you want to see you're so much better seeing on a wide cinematic screen.
I'm not big into the the sci-fi like the Star Wars franchise. a lot of you guys are.
If I was you bet I would want to see Star Wars or Star Trek or whatever on the same wide screen.

You fell asleep because it entered your soul and gave you a vision of the future Cats movie . A rare and delightful thing. Steven understands he knows it is more then just a Movie. It is a Movie Movie. Do not get too excited because i cannot confirm this but i heard a rumor in Cats 2 the Bloodbath the Alien from Mac and Me is joining them.

Phony as a 2-dollar bill. Sure, it would scare the typical teenager and gullible beings who were dumb enough to think that a shark as big as a whale, also had more intelligence than man.
Thanks for coming through, BG. That was so tasty.

The thing I could not miss seeing, in comparison to the American acotors of the past 40 years or so, was a surprise. And when I see the actors we have today when compared to these actors in this movie, I was mildly shocked. Because, when I see skillful acting on a movie screen these days, I do not see it as the norm.
Hollywood throws tons of junk to these movie houses and the young adults may not care or even enjoy it but more mature adults certainly will not, on average.
I am fully confident I can filter out the average actors from the poor to the best, and I believe I am a tad better than most viewers.
And what I saw in this movie was tremendous performances from at least 3 actors, maybe even 4?
I never heard of the rapist, Driver? But what a believable job he did in this classic. He seemd to be part Christain, part Devil, a man with no sexual ethics, yet was respected by all it seemed? That's a tough role to fill.
The star, the lady, I never heard of her either but she was simply outstanding, too. Those rape senes had to horrific to go through, probably and over to get what the old genius director would accept? And when she saw no escape from the critical gasps and gossip of the town and also the trial, she gave a solid performance as someone who was fighting for not only her honor but and her very life, too.
Affleck-never knew he could stand out like this role he portrayed here? A man who abuses the power he wields and one who used women as if they were kleanex. Another great performance, and like the two above, surely, 2 of the 3 will get rewarded by " The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences?"
And could Damon do better with his role as a great warrior, but also, a crude and self-centered man who is desperately seeking land and security?
And like someone else stated, I rarely go to a movie theatre when you can rent them or get them free at home in your most comfortable seat in your house. It's probably been 6 yers or more going to a theater.
Eat what you want, cook all the popcorn you desire and almost free, too.

This is certainly not a knock on this superb entertaining movie because the movie you pay a ticket to see must not have you yawning or going to sleep.
But the concluding battle between these two studs was one of the best I've seen. Maybe the best?
But in the true story, if it was even close to being as realistic as this one seemed, and to be bluntly honest, one of these two gladiators would have been dead within 5 minutes once off their horses. No human, carrying all that armor, and with the furious action each had to utilize to survive, one would be dead much sooner. Much, much sooner.
Hate to spoil your imaginations but macho guys [ me included ] never look a realism or even want to when you see fight scenes such as this where someone is destined to die.

I watch a ton of movies every year. This simply wasn't a good one. Adam driver is a good actor but the rest of the actors are in the downturn of their careers. The script just didn't do it for me.

A different look, no doubt. The battle to the death did nothing for you either?
What I thought I saw, to be frank, were characters of that 1400 century being very close to what their lives would be very close to being, authentically.
The wet, grimy streets and not a any elaborate gold-covered items were seen, if little?
The time of the Black Plaque, or very close, making this a dreadful time to be alive. I bought into that 1400 century depiction and those living human beings, too.

The side story of The Last Duel:
* A lengthy story of how it ccme to be:
The Last Duel true story explained
The film - co-written by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck - takes place around halfway through the Hundred Years War, a series of conflicts between England and France over claims to the French crown. French knight Jean de Carrouges (played by Matt Damon in the film) took part in several campaigns against the English in the Fourteenth Century, in locations such as Scotland and Normandy.
In 1380 Carrouges married Marguerite de Thibouville (Jodie Comer), daughter of the controversial known traitor Robert de Thibouville who had sided against multiple French Kings in territorial disputes. It seems Carrouges wished to use his father-in-law's claim to win back a valuable estate that was given to a man who would become very important later on - Jacques Le Gris (portrayed by Adam Driver).
The Last Duel

However, Le Gris was a favourite of property owner Count Pierre d’Alençon, who dismissed Carrouges's lawsuit. Carrouges, therefore, lost favour in the court while Le Gris became wealthy and popular while developing a womanising reputation, but nonetheless the two eventually reconnected and put an end to their feud - with Carrouges even introducing Le Gris to his wife Marguerite.
Then on 18th January 1386, Marguerite was home alone - a rarity for a noblewoman in the Middle Ages - when Le Gris then apparently arrived with his friend Adam Louvel, claiming that he was in love with her. Despite Marguerite's protestations, Le Gris is said to have forced himself into her house and attempted to bribe her into having an affair. When she again refused, Le Gris then violently raped her with the help of Louvel, threatening to kill her if she told anyone.
For the latest news and expert tips on getting the best deals this year, take a look at our Black Friday 2021 and Cyber Monday 2021 guides.
However, Marguerite did tell her husband what happened, who then brought charges against Le Gris. However Le Gris was, of course, the favourite of Count Pierre d’Alençon - so the expectation was so high that the hearing would be biased that Carrouges and Marguerite did not even bother turning up, and Count Pierre indeed accused Marguerite of dreaming up the attack.
Knowing he wouldn't find a fair criminal trial, Carrouges appealed to King Charles VI himself for a Game of Thrones-esque trial by combat. As the preliminary judges couldn't reach a verdict, the King ultimately granted the request for a duel - with Carrouges throwing down a gauntlet at the Parliament of Paris as per tradition, which Le Gris picked up. The duel would be to the death, with the survivor deemed innocent in the eyes of God - with Marguerite to be burnt at the stake for perjury if Carrouges lost.
Who won the duel in The Last Duel?
*Warning: spoilers ahead for the victor of The Last Duel*
YouTube Trailer Screenshot
Once a common practice, duels were rare in France by the fourteenth century, thus drawing in a crowd of hundreds to an official Paris arena as King Charles VI had made the event a part of his series of parties and celebrations. Marguerite had given birth to a son in the months leading up to the duel, which took place on 29th December 1386.
Both Carrouges and Le Gris were armed with the 'holy trinity' of weapons: a lance, longsword, and a heavy battle-axe, as well as a long dagger. The fight started on horseback, with the men going through four rounds of charges before killing each other's horses and moving the fight to a dramatic end on foot.
Despite getting stabbed in the thigh, Carrouges was able to get the upper hand by pinning Le Gris to the ground and landing several blows on his armour. Carrouges then angrily tore off Le Gris's faceplate and demanded he admit his guilt, only for the squire to again proclaim his innocence in the name of God. Carrouges then stabbed his former friend in the neck, killing him instantly.
Trailer Screenshot The Last Duel
Carrouges benefitted greatly from winning the duel - as well as surviving of course, the knight received a cash prize and was awarded the role of chevalier d'honneur and bodyguard at the royal household at Paris. He would go on to have two more children with Marguerite and died at the Battle of Nicopolis aged 66 years old. Sadly little else has been recorded about Marguerite's life, either before or after the famous duel.
Despite a lack of source material, the film does thankfully look to be putting Marguerite's voice at the forefront of this adaptation, showing the courage it took to speak out in a fourteenth-century society determined to publicly shame her for slandering a popular male figure. Given her father's low social standing, the problem of obtaining proof, the public shame of a trial and Count Pierre's affection for Le Gris it is widely accepted that Marguerite took a big risk by publicly accusing someone as popular as Le Gris.
The case has since become a cultural legend in France, with historians continuing to debate the events that took place to this day. Jager in particular notes in his book how even Le Gris's lawyer Jean Le Coq was not convinced of his client's innocence, and that one of Le Gris's alibis was accused of rape also.
Matt Damon as Carrouges in The Last Duel
Matt Damon as Jean de Carrouges in The Last Duel
While Carrouges v Le Gris was the last trial by combat to be officially sanctioned by the French King and the Parliament of Paris, it was far from the last duel to take place in France. While uncommon - and certainly not used for judicial verdicts - the practice continued unofficially for centuries afterwards, carrying on despite King Louis VIII introducing an official edict against duels in 1626.
In fact, the actual last duel in France took place as recently as 1967, when two politicians challenged each other to a sword fight after exchanging insults in parliament. However, it was slightly less dramatic than the 1386 duel - both participants escaped relatively uninjured.
