#142Update #5
STARTING DATE: February 16, 2009
TODAY'S DATE: May 1, 2009
GOAL: 100 Pounds in 365 Days
DAYS ON DIET: 74
DAYS LEFT TO GO: 291
POUNDS LOST: 46.2
POUNDS LEFT TO GO: 53.8
Needed this good session! After a two week long plateau to start the month, I jumped it and had a really nice two weeks, losing 8.4 pounds since my last weigh in!
I hope this non-plateau sticks around a few more days... I'd love to lose 3.8 pounds over the next two weeks. That would put me at 50 pounds for 3 months, which would be surreal.
But nothing wrong with 46 pounds in 2.5 monthsComment -

#145Congrats on your progress. Let me echo some things some others have already said... without excercise, weights, cardio etc... you are likely losing as much muscle as you are fat. Don't be obsessed with pounds.. adding lean muscle should be priority #1.. lean muscle burns off fat at an incredible rate...the lean muscle speeds your metabolism and vastly increases the # of calories you burn while you are idle...sleeping/on the internet...etc.
Good luck on your journeyComment -

#146It frustrates me a little that I go from eating 3-4 super fatty and processed disgusting fast food meals a day to eating much healthier, and with an absolute ton of willpower resist falling off the wagon en route to losing 45+ pounds, and everyone pitches in that I should be doing MORE.
I know you are all just trying to help, and I do appreciate your intentions. But do you know how hard it is to change your lifestyle so drastically overnight, all while getting accustomed to a new job and a new town and everything?
Rome wasn't built in a day. Trying to do way too much at once is a great way to get overwhelmed and quit. I really don't see why my strategy of doing one thing at a time; first incorporating a good healthy diet and then later adding in some cardio is that ridiculous of an idea.
How many people say they are going to lose weight and then quit within a week or two? I'm trying to do this the slow and steady way. I commend those of you that have the ability to avoid delicious foods and work out regularly... but this is really hard for me! I am doing my best.Comment -

If you eat less then X calories a day, you will lose weight, because you are burning more calories then you are consuming.
Again, I am NOT saying that exercise wouldn't help, as it adds muscled and can increase your metabolism. But it is patently untrue that I'm going to magically start putting weight back on if I continue to eat less calories then I burn per day.Comment -

#149Here is another scientific fact; your body burns calories even when it is completely at rest. Even with a sedimentary lifestyle (desk job), your body burns x amount of calories a day depending on your height and weight.
If you eat less then X calories a day, you will lose weight, because you are burning more calories then you are consuming.

#150Homeostasis....... your body will adjust its metabolism to match your avg kcal intake eventually and you hit a plateau. For me I know when this is occurring when my morning temperature goes below 97.4Comment -

#153people are trying to help, because those of us who actually know a thing or 2 about the topic know you are doing it the wrong way.. we are trying to spare you from learning the hard way.. even as you see the pounds melt away your metabolism is slowing down more and more each day with less and less food/calories. Those X amount of calories your body burns will get smaller and smaller if you choose to continue on the plan you are on. It seems to me, for a guy who loves to eat, you would actually prefer the excercise and still be able to eat the things you enjoy.
when you hit the wall, and you will, and start gaining weight, you will see the light.
we haven't even touched on the extreme strain you are putting on your heart right now with the drastic drop in calories.Comment -

But hypothetically, there is a morbidly obese person. They are deciding between 3 options;
A) Do nothing. Stay morbidly obese and continue to eat fatty and unhealthy foods, no dieting and no exercise.
B) Hits the gym hard, gets on a good diet right away. Hates both exercise and diet, feels extremely overwhelmed, exhausted and depressed. Gives up and goes back to doing nothing.
C) Realizes that the emotional burden of trying to do too much at once would deter long term success, so decides to first incorporate a healthy diet. Upon losing some weight and gaining some confidence, also begins to exercise and get on their way to a healthy new life
Is C really that bad?
And for the record, I do walk quite a bit (whenever I go on errands I park farther away from the door, walk around the whole place a few times instead of just to the isle I need to go).
I mean I guess I opened myself up to all this when I went public with this... but if you are trying to help, comments like: "when you hit the wall, and you will, and start gaining weight, you will see the light." aren't exactly up-lifters.
I mean if I went to a doctor and had said "doctor, I'm going to start eating healthy and then I'm going to start incorporating exercise in in a few months", would the doctor have said to me "Listen fatass, if you aren't going to exercise from day 1 don't bother eating healthy at all" ?Comment -

#155Dave, I'm down to 225 (from around 245 around 3-4 months ago). As long as your diet is repeatable for the future, you should be fine. Of course, eventually you'll hit a wall and maybe even gain a slight amount of weight back, but you probably dont have to worry about that right now.Comment -

GOAL: 100 Pounds in 365 Days

POUNDS LEFT TO GO: 48.0
Wow, FIFTY POUNDS in three months!
Was not expecting to be halfway there after only three months. Hopefully without any major hitches I can lose an average of 6 pounds a month from here on out, which will get me to my goal.
Planning out an exercise plan in the coming weeks, will include some combination of swimming, jogging, and the bike.

That isn't a bad idea... they say when you exercise you should "do something you enjoy"... it beats frigging jogging!
! And you are right, I'd certainly hope not!! At some point 16 lbs a month would get unhealthy, haha.
Now that I've dropped the initial 50 lbs, I want to shift the focus to exercising and solidifying up a bit. This may add some muscle and slow down the weight loss a bit, but how you look and feel is definitely more important than the number on the scale.Comment -

#171Keep it up! Dropping some pounds (which you're doing) will really increase your quality of life.
If you have the food situated, I'd strongly suggest you *gradually* start increasing your activity. Walk 1 mile at a slow pace. It might seem like you're not doing much... but the most important thing when starting a fitness program is to underachieve initially - you don't want to get sore or frustrated.
First week, try walking for 15 minutes. Keep your pulse below 140, and walk slow enough that you are never winded. After a full week of being bored doing this, you can slowly add time or speed... But keep your pulse below 140, and you breathing where you can comfortably talk while walking.Comment -

#172Good stuff Justin. That's definitely the plan to start fazing in some exercise. I bought a swimsuit and some running/walking gear, going to start moving one way or another this month.
It's been put off a bit... weekend before last I was excited about starting but came down with a bad cold. Last weekend girlfriend was in town, and this up coming weekend one of my best friends is going to be in town (not splurging too bad with him here is going to be tricky with all of the alcohol consumption.)
In any case, after that I will be back to my normal boring life, and I can start some sort of exercise routineComment -
