What's the most you've won on a lottery scratch-off?
Just curious. I don't play often so my biggest win is probably $10.
Anyone ever won a top prize?

There are few things more annoying than waiting in a line behind some fool buying those things...everything about the situation is -ev (unless you are involved with the lottery commissioners)

that's a closed minded attitude
here in wisconsin they publish how many of each game's top prizes are left. with only about 20,000 tickets outstanding last year, there was a $20 casino game book that still had 3 top prizes of $100,000 floating around
so just for the top prize it was worth playing unless there were a couple sitting around unclaimed (not likely)

I've won $500 on a $20 ticket several times.
$20 tickets have the best odds

that is usually true
check the back of the tickets, if you don't know how many top prizes are left in the batch then you can roughly figure your expected loss.
if the tickets have a 80% payback then you're essentially donating $4 out of every $20 to the state. but they are a lot of fun, so i still wouldn't necessarily consider it -ev
if you live your life worrying about how everything is -ev like nrmlcurvsrfr then you probably would never go to six flags, baseball games, or pretty much anywhere. you would sit at home where the drinks are free and there are no nuisances, and that would be a pretty shitty way to live

Guy I worked construction with while attending college, spent half his weekly check on scratchies. Upword of $500-600 per week.
Seen him scratch many $500 and $1,000 winners. Dumb fukker. Never have I ever, purchased a scratch off after being witness to that.

yeah over the long run they're going to get their %, just like sticking tons of money in slot machines
but in the short run you can easily buy a $20 ticket and win $100 or even $500 like smokey

mikey the trick is not to chase. spend $20 on the ticket and if you lose don't buy anymore. if you buy one per day your odds are pretty good. i know guys who have hit for 5K or more several times

If you knew how many tickets were left with relation to the unclaimed prizes you could have an advantage. But even knowing this, how likely are you to even find the ticket, how many locations sell them, etc. It still seems -ev to me. But ifthere is enough entertainment value I suppose one could justify the purchase but it seems like a cheap(not so much) thrill.

I don't play them, but had a friend that hit $50,000. I think he netted $38,000. He was the the guy that introduced me to offshore books many years ago.

agreed, the time and effort might not be worth it since if there's 20,000 tickets left you still have a pretty miniscule chance of hitting.
and i do agree for the guys buying 200 of them and not having any fun scratching them off it's really stupid. like the mindless zombies playing slot machines all day, if they looked like they were having fun i would say have at it, but most of them look like they're not really enjoying themselves.

I am stopping and buying a $20 scratcher today. Most I've ever seen is $10. I'm looking online where I can find these.

A couple of co workers have won excellent money with scratch offs.
One won $1,000 a week for life. He worked for a little bit and quit. The other hit a $20 one for $250k.
He bought a new truck and gave the rest to a fund manager. He is still working and his manager said he
will be able to retire by 50.
Both bought tickets at Sheetz on their way to work. (gas station)
I thought about taking a grand, driving around and buying $20 tickets. Never know.

Back in the 80's my mother went in to buy 2 $1 scratch tickets and there was some construction guy that had been there awhile and had lost approx. $100. He stuck his last twenty in his pocket for gas and asked my mother to scratch the ticket in the store because he just "knew" he should have broken into his last twenty. She scratched the first ticket in this poor sob's face and ran out the door as he was pounding the counter...three queens. Thousand dollar winner! Only big win of her life on those things...

Working people can make it rich one way. The lottery. You're not going to see those with professional jobs playing the lottery too often.
