Brewers are contenders now, but can they consistently win? Tough division with the Reds and Cards.

#39They are not title contenders, especially if Fielder leaves. If you mean division, then maybe.
They have a solid 1-5 but the bottom of the lineup is terrible. The bullpen is still bad also, that cost them A LOT of games last year.Comment -

#49Don't like the trade at all. They definitely need pitching, I guess nobody wants Fielder who has his heart set on greener pastures, or mister "I'm afraid of the left field wall" Ryan Braun.
Escobar best young player on the brewers last year if he can get his bat straightened out will be a top player. Jefress liked to smoke some reefer but he could throw smoke. Who knows maybe Jefress surpasses Grienke in two years.....Comment -

#51Don't really understand why people don't think the Crew have a good shot as anyone to win the NL Central. A rotation including Greinke, Yovanni, Marcum, Wolf, and Narveson/Capuano/Bush (whoever wins the job) is a HUGE impovement from last year. There bullpen has also been improving with some young hard throwing arms and will only continue to improve their numbers if guys like Greinke Yo and Marcum can go longer in ballgames. Are people forgetting that the Crew do have bats? The past 2 years it's always been that they have no pitching but good hitting. Well they didn't, now they do and still people give them no chance. Weeks/Hart/Braun/Fielder/McGehee can be a very streaky bunch cuz there big power hitters, but its as good as front of the order you'll see in the NL. Back of the lineup is weak, but then again what do the Cards really bring to the table after Pujols/Halladay??? Is Berkman really the answer? Maybe he is, but I'll believe it when I see him stay healthy. Would like maybe Hart to get a little work at CF because Gomez/Dickerson seems hopeless and then maybe get Gamel some time in right?? Who knows. But the Crew are definitely strong contenders in the NL Central. Don't forget, Prince had an off year, he's now in that contract year and is looking for the big $$$...Don't even need to say anything about the Reds (Helluva ball club), Have a great thing going. I'd say the division comes down to the health of the big hitters Braun/Fielder, Votto/Phillips/Rolen, Pujols/Halladay and then of course the pitching staffs.
Just don't understand why people can't give respect due to where it is earned. Should be an interesting and exciting race.
***Can't stand the Yankees fans who think an anxiety disorder has anything to do with Greinke pitching for them. No need to be sour because you missed out on Lee and Greinke. Keep playing it off like you didn't want them***Comment -

The Greinke deal was 100% an awesome move for the Brewers. Milwaukee brought in CC for the pennant race but beyond that who the hell are the Brewers going to be able to get that will make an impact? You can't look at this the same way as the Yankees, Sox or Mets signing free agents. This was the best possible move for the Brewers with probably one of the best guys that the Brewers could have gotten in return for a trade. They have NO chance at any big market big money guys. THey now have Greinke for at least 2 years and hopefully will resign him long term. Although I am frustrated with giving up Cain and the 2 young pitchers they are not a sure thing. Greinke is not a sure thing either but he has turned his off the field problems around and has prooved to be a stud. Now move him to the NL where it has been prooven that it's easier to pitch and your looking at a perennial all star. The Brewers loaded with young home grown talent will get passed losing these 4 guys as well as Lowrie in the Marcum deal just as they did losing the young talent in the CC deal. Remember there that the Brewers only got one playoff series out of CC they did not lose anything of value either. These types of trades are a horse a piece right now until we see what the young guys do and see if the studs fill the bill but either way, I like this move... a lot.Comment -

#56I just watched the ESPN short video on the trade and the analyst was touting the brewers as "a major factor now in the NL central." Please, with all due respect to the Brewers, the Reds and Cardinals still have better rotations and better overall teams than the Brewers. This was a nice addition to the Brewers indeed, but it isn't going to win them the division by itself. Now if they would have kept C.C. a couple of years ago then we would be talking but they didn't. The Brewers will finish 3rd in that division this season. Getting Greinke is just going to make them "competitive" not "serious contenders" for the division, the Cards and Reds are the top teams in that division. The Cubs and Brewers are a step below those 2 and in rebuild mode and the Stros and Pitts are a notch below them yet trying to rebuild.Comment -

#61holding on to Greinke was pointless for them .. they are and will be continuously in rebuild mode for the next few years .. in the mean time they are stock piling with talent and very well might be a solid club in a few years ... they are stacked with young talent some home grown others from tradesComment -

#62I disagree completely, respectively of course. First off there is no way they could have kept CC plus anyone else they have right now. CC's contract would have put the Brewers out of business. They would have never paid that price tag so the argument about being a solid division contender if they would have somehow kept CC plus their current long term signings PLUS the Greinke deal would not have even been attainable. I think still labeling the Brewers as rebuilding is kind of off base too, they have been rebuilding for years and being the small market team that they are finally got a Cy-Young type caliber player to add to their roster. They have given up young potential talent, but the Brewers are stocked full of it so it is worth it. They are by no means right now serious pennant contenders but division contenders, yes. You say they will finish no better than third and I willing to put money that they finish 1st or 2nd. The Reds could be a one year wonder and the Cards are getting old with plenty of question marks as well. Cubs, yes rebuilding. They can't do it with their current group of guys, maybe Pena will help turn something around. I am willing to say that the Central race will be one of the tightest just like this past year, but you have to put the Brewers in that race.
Pony up then if you are so confident in the Brewers. 1. I'll bet you anything up to 300 points that the Brewers will NOT win the NL Central in 2011. Outright win must occur. If it goes to a co-champs/tiebreaker scenario then the bet is no action.
2. I will also bet you any amount up to 100 points that Greinke will NOT finish the 2011 season with the most wins out of all pitchers in the NL Central. If he ends up winning the NL Cy Young AND has the most wins of any pitcher in the NL Central in 2011 then i will gift you a bonus 50 extra points as well.
You can pick your amounts up to my max listed above and if you want the second bet as well or just the Brews to win the division bet and i will respond if i agree to the bet(s). If you want to change the terms of the bets around i'm not interested in placing bets with you then on this subject. My opinion is that the Brewers will NOT win the NL Central in 2011 and that Greinke will NOT be the best pitcher in the NL Central in 2011. Let me know. Should be an exciting year of baseball this season.Comment -

#67I can't wait for baseball this year .. all sorts of quality players switching teams and stuff like that which im pumped about that ... anyways as for your bet proposals do you know where futures lines are for any of these bets... I want to find them before we place any ... I'm more hooked on the Brewers being a decent team than Greinke neccessarily gelling right away and being DOMINANT so I will have to look into the win bet a little more. Either way ... I respect your opinions and looking forward to a season breakdown or preview if you are going to have one later in the winterComment
