C'mon man, don't fall for that. This bill has been an issue for months. There's more in the bill than just giving money to 9/11 victims.

Imagine for a second the GOP came up with the "Helping Victims of Gun Violence" bill where the bill's stated purpose was to provide some sort of short term monetary relief for families suffering through a gun-related tragedy. (Like when a father or mother or other income provider gets murdered). Sounds like a fairly worthy cause right? But imagine that this seemingly altruistic GOP bill was stuffed with small little caveats like "only families with no ties to gang violence will be eligible for funds"; "any families that receive funds will be required to pay them back by working in the U.S. Post Office"; "victims whose deaths MIGHT have been a suicide are ineligible;" and the bill's funds would come through "eliminating the U.S. Department of Education."

Would YOU vote for that?

So say you and some of your Democrat friends stand up to the GOP and say no. And start trying to rework a compromise for the funding. Which gets ironed out theoretically, only the Democrats add some provisions of their own "to prevent future gun deaths," and one of those provisions "requires that every four months all citizens who own a gun must pass a background check as well as be evaluated by a licensed government approved psychiatrist to determine they are in healthy mental state."

The Zagroda bill's contents were conceived in a very similar manner, and if you knew what was loaded all they way through it, then you probably wouldn't be condemning the GOP. Even some Democrats voted against this thing.

Passage of this bill would have said to the American people: whenever there is a truly worthy cause out there the government should address (such as the suffering of 9/11 First Responders), the U.S. Congress shall be encouraged to take advantage of the peoples' sympathy by trying to pull a fast one and load such bills with partisan driven wrangling that seeks to punish or reward those whichever the majority party wishes.

This thing could have been passed 6 MONTHS AGO. And the only reason this is being brought up now is to buy the Democrats some time to avoid having to deal with other issues.

If 9/11 victims were really on the minds of our Democrat officials, they could have taken care of this in August or September. They didn't.

While the GOP possibly could have tried harder over the summer to be creative and find a compromise the last few months the Democrats would have accepted, that would be asking for rarified clarity in a time of wild confusion and angst.

More than anything this was the Democrats abusing the sentimental hearts of the American people for their own gain, and that type of political thinking should be weeded out of government, not promoted. It is shameful what the Dems have been doing with this issue, and it is unfortunate they have been successful in their goals by getting folks like you to lash out at the GOP.
