NFL is slowly going to start losing fans if they keep this stuff up. More PC bullshit=less fans.

The reason given fore the fine might be the most absurd thing so far.

"James Harrison was fined $25,000 for roughing the passer, specifically he made helmet contact to the chest of the Buffalo quarterback, who was in a defenseless position at the time the contact was made," the NFL said in an e-mail Tuesday to The Associated Press.
Exactly. How many tackles per game involve helmet contact to the body? Every time the quarterback is hit when throwing he is defenseless. Totally absurd, he is being targeted based on reputation.

                  There really isn't any inconsistency.

Lower your head when you tackle = fine

Lot of players unhappy with Goodell. Rightly so. The minimum contract in the NFL is 300K. Do you think such a player is ever going to risk getting a 50K penalty? There's no way. When in doubt, step aside. You see it all the time now that defenders don't even try to tackle. Goodell has changed the NFL into a joke. Once in a while there's still a good game, but that's in spite of Goodell, not because of him. The sooner he leaves the better.

                      Yes.

Fines should be scaled as percentage of salary. Not all players earn millions.

Then why isn't every similar hit, and there are tons, fined? Why would Terrell Suggs, an opponent in a bitter Rivalry who they are about to face, say he's being targeted? There was nothing wrong with that hit, and almost every player or former player I've heard comment on it agrees. You can't hit the knees, you definitely can't hit the head, but if you lower your level to not hit the head you could make "helmet contact" with the chest. Absurd. The posters calling pussification are correct, but the pussification is definitely not consistent.

It will be interesting to see if offensive players are ever fined for lowering their heads and creating the helmet contact themselves.

A clearer explanation of the fine.

A clearer explanation of the fine.

While the NFL threatened suspensions for repeat offenders when it began its stricter enforcement of player safety rules earlier this season, Harrison has not been suspended. League spokesman Michael Signora said there was no such penalty for the Fitzpatrick hit Sunday because it wasn’t flagrant.

“It was illegal because the initial contact with the defenseless quarterback’s chest was made with his helmet,” Signora said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. “It was not a late hit. It was not a hit to the head. And he pulled off the quarterback when they hit the ground. Although it was not flagrant, as a multiple offender of the rules in this area, Harrison received a significant fine.”

I think a player learns not to tackle with his helmet, when he gets paralysed from doing it.

On the other side of the coin, how many sprinters win by a head, when you are accelerating it is almost impossible for the head not to be thrust forward. You get caught with your your head behind your legs and you will be flattened on your arse, mowed over by what feels like a freight train.
