NFL Has Now Jumped The Shark
The Colts/Eagles game was the final straw for me. Reminded me of the "Bus" Bettis Super Bowl. Maybe even more blatant.

Now this is just me and my opinion, and I saw my first NFL game in person in 1955. Now that was football. Lombardi and Halas football squaring off at Wrigley Field. A simple but great game for a more simple time. Boys hate to say it, but on many levels it was a much better package than what you see today regardless of the athletes not being as big or as talented.

This is now an entertainment production. As I said in another thread, the NFL is so well leveraged now that it can easily craft itself, its teams and its storylines to do whatever the NFL damn well pleases.

As far as last night's storyline: "White Knight' Manning vs. "Dog Killer" Vick. The "White Knight" leads the glorious comeback. Of course he had to for theatrical value. Falls a bit short, but surely not by design. But then that's OK too. Great theater was created nonetheless.

I now find this show business spectacular unwatchable not to mention unbettable. You all love the NFL and thats cool. That of course is your perogative. It can be entertaining and is designed to be for sure, regardless of the officials making it rain with dirty laundry to manipulate the theatrical production.

So I'm not going to watch anymore of it. Passed on the late game and will pass tonight also. Have made a list of things that I can enjoy doing on Sunday afternoon. The list is extensive. And this is not a gut reaction. After that Bettis Superbowl I never again renewed my Sunday ticket package.

So boys go ahead and flame me as an irrelevant old fossil. Tell me I'm full of chit. That's OK and is certainly true at least to some degree. But somewhere on this board someone, I'm sure, has a brain and agrees with me. Plenty of other games and sports where one can get an action fix.

    I miss bases already.

Missing out on a good revenue stream. NFL is by far the least 'fixed' league around. Good luck with whatever you do.

The scripts are like WWE, makes it all the easier to bet on.

But the league is a joke and barely watchable.

I never heard of this not being allowed incidentally to smack the QB in the back of the helmet with your open palm while he did not have possession of the football and everybody is fighting to recover the loose ball.

Not sure if they made this rule up during halftime or if it was a blatant bad call intended to help get Manning back in the game, but it is disgraceful none the less.

Both of the extremely bad calls in this game were not only bad calls but were both very critical calls which allowed the Colts to not only retain possession of the football but also put them in scoring position.

I have never agreed with crying fix on a game but I am not sure what else to make of this

Yeah, some bad calls in the game for sure. Find me a game that is officiated well, though. The NFL scrutinizes every play and every call and at least goes out of it's way to get it 'right'. Sure, they don't always get it right - but at least you can challenge plays now in an attempt to get it right. Unfortunatly, phantom flags are a problem. Also, superstars have a slightly different set of rules - but I definitly think the NFL is better in this regard than say 'a Greg Maddux outside strike respect call' or 'no traveling Jordan rules'... Guys like Manning get the benefit of the doubt in fouls vs him... But so do guys like Revis, who commits a penalty almost every play, but he still gets flagged from time to time.

The helmet hits really are a growing concern. The way the league is cracking down on them recently has even changed how I view a pass play. It pisses me off. It's football. It's a massive collision sport. The league can have MUCH safer helmets because the technology has been around for a LONG time. It's just the helmets won't be as shiney and it will look different.

Those calls were awful. The false start on the Eagles when they were driving to run out the clock was made up. On the last interception a flag was thrown, did not watch to see what that call was but it looks like it was out there in case the Int was run back. Someone got to the officials in that game.

There was terrible calls in every game this weekend. There was almost 30 penalty flags thrown in the oak/kc game with many many blown calls. I honestly don't think you would have been complaining if you didn't lose money on the game. AM I RIGHT?

Obvious there is a "higher power" controlling coaching hires, black quarterback agenda, taking out the violence...

Game is for sure being controlled..

Owners are in cahoots to make money..

Colts are just an average team lifted to greatness by Manning. He hasn't had a lot of superstars around compared to other teams but year in and year out the Colts are a threat because of Peyton.

Funny you call it a "storyline" that manning faced Vick yesterday.

So when they scheduled the eagles to play the colts that is part of a big conspiracy? I guess they knew Kolb would get hurt so it would set up this incredible scam.

                                          This thread is stupid.

Watch college ball then. There are just as many penalties. But you can rest assured that there is no NFL agenda.

In 2008 I was loving football again because I felt I was seeing some of the hardest hits ever in the game, where I'd be watching the game, see a hit and do that turn my head and say "wooo" thing like 5+ times a game....and lemmy tell ya, I love doing that woo thang.

But now hits that dont even make me do the woo thang get fines of like 75,000? The same Cris Collinsworth that used to "wooo" along with me on the big hits, 2 years later gives a dialog of how the guy is going to be deservedly fined.

Like Mr Jones I am disappointed in NFL 2010, but my interpretation of what is going on is that unlike the NFL of yesteryear, almost every one of these players is a Multi-Millionaire. This leads them to be coddled and protected by those that rely on them: family, agents, friends, whatever. When you wake up one day and you realize u have a multi-million dollar NFL contract, which means any bank will loan you most of that money up front, you want to live like a millionaire, a long long life with no aching joints, head problems etc.

I think where Mr Jones is on the right track, is the TV stations have been pumping these storylines to get chicks or whatever interested, and they have the financial pressure to get the NFL to soften up. Why? So the douche bag players they have invested air-time on with their boring storylines can play 15 years instead of 5.

Mr. Jones, I have been telling people for 5 years how rigged the NFL is. Referees have too much power!! Instant replay is used for a delay on some plays to determine what spin will be placed on the call (reference 2008 steelers/chargers game and the lateral that was returned for a TD and later changed only to be changed back after the game was over and the score COULDN'T be altered!!!) I am convinced the league and/or Vegas call the refs and tells them what needs to be done with certain calls!! I may be a conspiracy theorist, but can you honestly tell me that week after week and year after year these are the best refs the NFL can employ??? If these guys made as many mistakes, phantom calls, non-calls, and replay blunders at my company, they wouldn't last a day!!! Totally subjective is what the NFL has become and Vegas/Goodell laugh all the way to the bank!

Imagine how bitter I would be if I actually lost money on these games!

There are crooked refs and players in every sport. In college sports many players shave points. In pro sports refs are easily approachable by gamblers. Do not think it is a high percentage of games but it does go on. Refs are not millionaires, IF they are offered 50K to impact a game many of them take it.

It's funny that you say this. When I watch the NBA, I often feel less than satisfied with the result. One team seems to get all the calls, a ticky-tack foul on one end is countered with a no-call mauling on the other, special rules for superstars....etc. Yesterday was the first time I felt that way after watching an NFL game.

                                                          Indy is always involved.

Remember last year when Indy played the Titans and Manning threw a beam into the end zone to cover the over and homeboy dropped that shit like it was going to kill him.

I agree.......but be smart about the fix and your all good.

                                                            Learn the rules

The call on the slap to manning's head was not a bad call, it's a bad rule but not a bad call. The refs call that every time because it is a rule now. Granted it is a stupid rule because a qb has never gotten hurt from a slap to the head from a hand, but nevertheless it's a rule.

If you really think the NFL is fixed, then you really need to get a grip on reality. There are way too many people involved I the NFL for not one person or player to come out and spill the goods. It's not like they are in the closet thinking goodell will send out a hit....hahaha
