Stealthy I'm a decade ahead of you and have switched jobs a few times over the last 15 years

I can only say that the next time I switch jobs, I will take off at least 3 months in between. I should've done it before I started my current job and I knew it but things happened, I was offered the job on the spot and knew it wouldn't be open long, so I took it. It's a great job and I'm glad I'm where I am, but when I move on from here, I'm taking time off.

    Many Thanks
Dam Burrito, I know how that feels to not being able to walk back to your desk and collect all your personal stuff and say bye to your colleagues. How much were you making and was the place shutting down or just had to do a lay off of employees like in the movie Office Space?

It would be awful if you're coming down to your final checks. Look at it now, therefore you know what you're in for. I also totally agree about a job that let's you go and they follow you as you pick up your belongings as if you were a criminal. You were good enough to work there, then all of a sudden, they have like a security person treat you like you're not trusted. Happened to me once. I told them get off my back or I will sue them for harassment.
Willer, hopefully I won't be unemployed that long. I think JJ mentioned it earlier in this thread but I'm single, no kids, and recently moved in with the folks. Funny how that worked out, I moved out of my apartment at the end of Feb, planned to use my parent's place as a "jump off" point to facilitate my next and move into the city (DC). Considering the circumstances from earlier this week, I could've been in a really bad spot. So in a way I'm blessed - Gotta family that loves me, saved wisely since I graduated college, paid of student loans so I have no debt, and am not saddled with backbreaking bills. That doesn't mean I'm not going to apply for unemployment, I agree that it has been earned by my time in the workforce, but I'm certainly not going to rely on it to make "ends meet", so to speak.

You have more moxie than I do Willer. I was pretty broken up about being "escorted" around, I didn't have the clear mind to think that up. You spend a lot of time with colleagues, so for them to rip that away with an Adios felt crappy. But I get their reasoning.

CDUBBer, I've been propositioned by friends to invest in their start-ups. I've never really been the risk taking type, so I may pass. Unless I have enough liquidity to venture into that realm that is, now is not the time.

I totally agree on the networking point. Get your foot in the door is more about who you know than what you know it seemed to be in the field I worked. I have put preliminary feelers out to old bosses, colleagues, and friends and to my surprise - the reaction has been positive. I truly did dread the "unemployed" label, feeling stigmatized but I realize people are more than happy to help and not typecast me. I will remember this and when or if I need to pay it back, or forward - I certainly will!

Another thing annoying about that situation is I got some nefarious items at my desk. We also have a gym in our building so my poor supervisor (whom I hand picked to collect my items since he was cool with me) has to box up sweaty gym shorts, Tshirts, and underwear.

Lol at needing a guard to go to your desk that's pretty lame. A buddy of mine who was with a marketing firm recently left with a couple of other people at that company to start their own firm. Management at that company played like everything was amicable the whole way - during talks about clients etc. He went in to HR for his exit interview who told kindly that "if he wanted to he could take his last couple of days off." He walks back to desk and his computer password is changed

Definitely more underhanded than what your employer did. The guard was probably policy and/or they saw that video where you were contemplating if you could fly off that ledge. That combined with the fact you went fight club on management (or maybe you shouldn't bring me every piece of shit you find around the office - while showing him your bleeding gums from last night's fight - is never a good thing to say to your boss, for future reference) would have had me calling the cops long ago.
Yea thankfully what I went through wasn't nearly as shitty. How do you know about that video? I don't think I published it. I do have it archived on my comp you some kinda chinese hacker stevey?

Mayan there's no shame in assimilating to your surroundings. Grandparents moved here so I didn't have to deal with the daily death hole that is Mexico. That was their greatest gift to me. I see too many descendants of immigrants fall trap to the unsavory elements of what their family's strove to escape. Don't get me wrong, I am proud to be Mexican - strong familial ties, strong spirituality, and a strong work ethic. There are many other Mexicans who exude these traits, but it's not where we should be. Despite the over generalized rhetoric some in the national spotlight like to toss around, we have the ability within the framework established by this great country to change the perceptions and make a better reality for our families. It will come, it just takes time, and I hope that when you're an old cripple and I'm shitting my pants we'll see that happen

Many Thanks Kraker, I hoped you'd chime in and am very happy to see you have.

I dunno if this is positive or perhaps a negative, but when you say you'll take 3 months off I assume you've got your time planned to do something you want accomplished, if for nothing else than personal enjoyment/satisfaction. I can't even fathom what I could occupy myself with for the next 3 months. Seriously, part of me views work as a way to pass time, and if I got to pass it might as well get paid to do so. So yeah, for me, work feels like work. Don't get me wrong, I liked what I did - But I didn't love it - it never got to a point where I lost track of time. Those type of events have been sporadic in my life. I dunno kraker, I know you're sharing your personal views, but at this moment, I'm having trouble molding it to myself. I feel like I'm missing a good lesson here.

Jmobiler, I'm not totally going to tell you how much I was making but as the most senior employee of my department, I was making the most and had a comfortable salary considering my plot at this point in life. Place is not shutting down, just making budgetary cuts on staff due to a recent snafu with losing a longtime (and expensive) client. I'm just speculating, but given what it's peers have done in the industry, I wouldn't be surprised if they went the way of shipping staff jobs midwest where cost of living is cheaper. Also, DC employee rights are too friendly to the worker, which is becoming a double edged sword. At the end of the day, it is what it is, and thankfully, my colleagues came outside in our little park area to say their goodbyes. I hope you got some closure in your situation and some solace from that life episode.

you need to be reapplying asap if you plan on parlaying your work experience. It is a fact HR will punish you for long gaps of unemployment and that usually starts around 6 months.

Also, willingness to move out of state is important.
