Dave Cokin announcing on "X" his time is up.
    This sucks.....

Ok the time has come. I went to the doc about one year ago for what was supposed to be maybe a 30 minute biopsy. Turned into about an 8 hour procedure. After speaking with the meds and weighing the options I opted to pass on the chemo and let nature take its course. Damn, heard that he was struggling. People need to understand what Dave did. He tried to legitimize the tout business.
Where's the fuckin power box, Carol?

This one hurts. I always said that Dave Cokin was my favorite tout.

He did his research. I used to read about his systems. He spoke knowledgeably about personnel.

In my opinion, that's how you do it. I exchanged some emails with him where I was considering purchase of a package from him. I can say that he definitely didn't give me the Hard Sell. He told me the terms, and actually said that I should be betting a little bigger if I was going to purchase. He told me that if I declined (which I did), it was No Problem.

Sad news here. Had his share of years hanging with scamdicappers and did a bit of that himself, but was always a solid guy. I admit I made fun of him and other touts years ago having been through the calls and pitches from them. But Cokin had a better track record than most for sure.

I recall he even posted on forums a while and faced the music even when a big pick lost, or was in a slump. Tried his best and was always worth listening to his opinions. Shared plenty of free plays with decent insight. His older days with giving out college football picks on the Sunday night radio show are still remembered.

It’s clear with all the Twitter remarks that he’s been well regarded. Seems he did not always bet much on his own plays but had no shortage of buzz going on his big “Game of the Year” releases when they happened.

Hope he can last through these hard times and keep contributing for football season.

In any business, and especially in that one, when your colleagues have high praise for you and you are still alive, that kind of says it all. Sounds like he is a first class guy that happened to work in a business known for having shady characters.
Real sorry to hear. Good luck sir.

Was he a winning documented tout ? Or did he scam people out their money with losing picks like 99.9% of every tout in that industry. That’s all I wanna know, since you vouch for this guy.

Guess it's hard to believe that there are honest, kind people in businesses that have scum bags within them.

But there are. And he apparently was one of those.

The stain on the floor always detracts from how nice the rest of the floor actually is.

Also his track record on Golf winners was quite good. I don't know the ROI but he might have been close to +60% ROI. 7% winners at odds of 20/1 or higher.

Always liked him - I remember when he was on "Proline" in the 1990's with Feist, Root, Spreitzer, etc. He was the voice of reason with that crew!

                            Here's Part 2...

The original prognosis was weeks, possibly months. I’m already one year in and feel good. I look like shit but will accept the opinion of many that I looked like shit anyway.

Unfortunately after mostly spinning its wheels and accomplishing surprisingly little, the cancer has now taken dead aim (grim but accurate choice of words) at my carotid artery. One doesn’t have to be a med whiz to know what that means. Basically you should not count on getting a Christmas present from me. I’ve got days or weeks, perhaps a couple months left and I’ll be going, going, gone. (Part 2)

Question: if you are a winning bettor with a bankroll of X (hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions, etc)

why not bet your own picks and then right after you get your money down you sell your picks to make money on the side and keep building your bankroll?

Slurry, I think that's what he's saying. Doctor offered him a path of Chemo, and he's aware that is a tough path. Opted for letting nature take its course.

He's aware that the end is near, and he's making people aware of it. In the gambling community there was an undercurrent that he's had health problems for at least 18 months.

I learned from him. I respected his career. Go back and read some of his old articles. He was aware of things before the masses. Can only wish him the best.

If it doesn’t help me make money then I’m probably not gonna do the research. That’s why I asked the question Chucky. Thanks for the small sample size answer though.

I saw him on wagertalk with last year's bowl games. He'll he is the reason I watched it. He was looking pretty rough then with an eye patch and giving the overall like he was wearing down.

Dave Cokin is a Las Vegas and sports betting legend. He also for years had a great radio show out here. Great guy in person too. Always friendly and gracious. I had dinner with him once at Piero’s and it was a great time. Just telling old vegas sportsbook/betting stories. Nobody said a word and we just listened. This is unfortunate. He will be missed.

I always get a good laugh when people go nuts about touts… Who cares? There are greater scams happening all around you. Look at what your tax dollars fund. It’s personal choice if you buy picks, drugs, booze, fast food, etc…Many posters have worked scam jobs in sales, government, etc.. Based on what I know of Dave he was pretty straight forward. I’m sure he wasn’t always perfect but that’s business.

Chuck, he was always great to listen to. I met the guy in 2004 and 20 years later he always asked about me and my family when I would see him out at local joints. I even left for Scottsdale for 10 years and he remembered me. Las Vegas is a very small town and he is loved here.

That guy has looked bad for years.

I guess he was a smoker

He might have been on the stage with Lee Pete and Jim Brown? at the Stardust.

The key to any business is marketing and the Jim Feist crew were the first with Ness, Cokin, etc.

For 7 years, Dave gave out CFB picks on the Stardust Line Sunday night show, hosted by John Kelly.
                                                              His record was 190-131-5, 59.2%, +45.9u.

The only difference between him & I is simply I don’t charge. They’re all free, they’re all public and they’re all documented. These were all graded on a one unit scale, just like his own. I play more underdogs than him. That’s why my winning units are higher with a slightly less winning percentage.
