      i noticed that wording also when i first read it, but wasn't sure what he might have been implying.

      I just always thought the batter had to at least pull the bat back a little , or drop his hind leg back.

        Ok, say runner is at 2nd. Ball hits batter. As far as I know the runner on 2nd doesn't automatically advance.
        Are you saying that he does? Or that he can't no matter where the ball goes?

          No, the runner can't advance. It's a dead ball.

          Only way the runner on 2nd will advance would be if there was also a runner on first.
