pretty sure american is being way more nice/generous than other airlines would be... the stuff that really sucks is when there is no cancellation/change fee but you have to pay $200 for "handling" or some other nonsense

You can only hold tickets on American for 24 hours if flight is booked at least 7 days in advance. If a flight is put on hold and departure is less than 7 days, you have to book by 11:59pm same day of putting ticket on hold.

i have heard of an extended hold for certain routes on American but there is an extra fee for that.
