Housing, food, vet,

I've always wanted to own a racehorse. If I ever had a decent sum of money I didn't know what to do with, this is one thing I'd do. Good luck.

Is this like getting a boat? Maintenance overlooked?
Best day is acquiring the item followed closely by the 2nd best day in selling the item?

What would you estimate a year of housing food in the vet would cost? Also how much does the trainer cost and how much do you win if the horse comes in the top three?

Housing and food cost is approx 60$ a day (very cheap rate), if you dont know anyone in industry your looking closer to $100-120.
I do not pay my trainer but she takes 10% of winnings. But on average training would be another 60-100 a day.
At woodbine you get paid out in 5 places, and horses that dont end up 5th or better get a starter bonus ( money just for being in a race) 1st gets 60 2nd 20 3rd 10 the rest of the payouts dependant on how many horses in the race, this is just for woodbine other tracks differ. The payout is based on the purse, each race has different purses,

Sounds like it would be a lot of fun! I wouldn't want to go it alone though I would want it at most 50% I would probably want to split it with a buddy or something?
Or would that be like splitting a boat with a buddy? a bad idea.

I live in Minnesota and my home track is Canterbury.
What happens to the animal in the winter?
Would someone need to travel with the horse to another track?

i have 4 horses at the moment. i dont own 100% only 33%. Horse can just be housed in the winter or it could be taken to another track but then you gotta add in additional housing feeding and transportation fees. (IMO not worth it as we have learned). You don't have to be there with the horse but you will wanna make sure you know the trainer and the farm its staying at. "We are just lucky to have a connection at gulfstream" only kept him there for the winter. i believe gulfstream runs every month except Novemeber i believe.

So what's the bottom line do you think a handful of regular guys with minimal knowledge of the industry could pull it off ?

Honestly if you guys are just looking to pass time on weekends and have the money its a very fun investment. Make sure you do alot of reasearch also on trainers and where you would potentially house the horse. If your going to pick up a horse off a claim. Make sure you do your research into the Bloodline, previous vetting etc etc. (also remember the vets can be paid off...... not saying the races are rigged but you do not 100% know the health of the horse unless you have your own vet on hand to do a full check for you)
If your in it just for the money. Don't waste your time.
Also be prepared to lose your investment in a heartbeat if the horse gets a leg injury or other non-repairable injury during a race. One of our very first horses was put down after breaking a leg in his first race. was a 30k CAD claimed horse (before we even knew it he was put down right on trackside)

Just make sure u talk to it shute, sleep in the barn with it when it's sick or injured like Tony soprano
If someone puts it down for a small gain or to cut costs go their house and savagely beat them to death with a frying pan in thr kitchen

It's Arabian not Arabic
Also, even with good bloodlines your horse could be a dud. I know a guy who bought a horse who had great bloodlines then as it matured would trot with his front legs but gallop in the back
