I can't account for your memory 8 years ago. However, it's only been about 3 years since facebook started customizing news feeds based on what people on your friends list were clicking on.

With that came kind of a facebook-seo where alt-news sites tried to weasel their way into feeds. You know all those "97% of people guess this color" bullshit stuff you see on facebook? These quizzes are built to attract mass numbers, then the user base is resold and tweaked so that the owner can then spam those same people with news stories etc.

I have far more conservatives on my friends list than Democrats, and I rarely seen any shit being shared about what kind of bowing Obama did, or what kind of queer cereal that he liked. However, every single day several of my "Democratic" friends do nothing but post shit about Trump all day long. 3 of them are not even from the United States.
