2:40 PM PT -- Cops say they have detained a man they believe to be the shooter -- 54-year-old Ronald Gasser.

Cops say McKnight did NOT have a gun at the time of the shooting.

Emergency responders tried to administer CPR but to no avail.Ex-NFL running back Joe McKnight was murdered in a road rage shooting in New Orleans ... law enforcement tells TMZ Sports.

The incident occurred at 2:43 PM. Family members identified the 28-year-old at the scene.

A witness told NOLA.com ... she saw McKnight trying to apologize to another man after some sort of traffic incident.

The witness says the man then pulled out a gun and shot McKnight -- and while standing over him screamed, "I told you not to f*** with me" ... then fired another shot into his body.

I'm a huge proponent of gun control. I know many of you want to protect your right to bear arms but this shit has gotten ridiculous. We are dealing with thousands of people with mental illnesses. They are 1 step away from doing something stupid and hurting someone. We have to find ways to reduce the number of guns on the street period. A friend of mine went to 3 gun shops right before the election and told me that they were all PACKED with people buying guns. He wanted to buy (I can't remember what he was buying) but none of the stores had it. All the reps were trying to sell him more powerful/expensive guns. He was shocked at how there were so many people and how they were all just buying up shit they obviously don't even know how to use. Crazy.

Some said the dude pulled McKnight from his car...another said he fired two shots another said four. One witness says he fired once the. Stood over him and said I told you not to fukk with me then dropped another round into his body.

I went to UCLA...so in general i couldn't stand McKnight. I met the guy about 8 years ago when he showed up at the Home Depot Center in Carson to watch the CIF finals. The guy was genuinely a good guy. Being a UCLA guy I was trying to find fault in him and think of something bad to say about him as he attended my bitter rival. I couldn't find anything bad to say. This is tragic and i feel for all of his family. RIP Joe McKnight...coming from a Bruin fan for life.

2. Sells drugs and or hooked on drugs
