This is when I start questioning god. Tony Gwynn was a true gentleman, hero to many, a great baseball player; a role model. 54 years? Not enough.

it should serve as another lesson against tobacco. Gwynn was a heavy chaw guy in his day. Cancer sucks, but this was somewhat brought on by his own habit.

Yep. Although it was never officially proven, Tony himself blamed his chewing tobacco habit for the cancer.

                        What a sad day.

He and Cal were my faves.

Really a treat to see them honored at the '01 all-star game and then enter the hall together.
                                    throw Pucket in there also

54 years old. Way too young to die. I'm shocked that this happened. Didn't even see the story on ESPN til I noticed this thread. When I played little league baseball... everyone wanted to be like him.

Guy had an awesome life. Got to play baseball for a living. 54 years and living life to the fullest is better than 100 years of a boring life.

In case any of the young-uns don't realise the meaning of those Maddux numbers ...

                                                Lifetime vs Maddux

                                                Tony Gwynn .429
                                                Mark McGuire .316
                                                Barry Bonds .262
                                                Sammy Sosa .210

Wasn't Maddux like < 3.00 ERA ten or twelve different seasons of his career?

I grew up watching him play and collected his cards but I completely forgot about him having cancer let alone that he was this close to death. It must've been a terrible last few mos for him and his family.

I don't know about others here but I don't tend to follow the daily occurrences in players lives once they retire. Anyone who does probably needs to reevaluate what's important in life
