Phil Steele: Chargers -11½
By: Phil Steele
The Chargers should have no trouble at home Sunday against the visiting Tennessee Titans.
San Diego beat the Titans 38-17 as a 3-pt HD in the last meeting in 2004. The Chargers are off last week’s MNF game vs the Raiders, and those results are unknown as is the performance of QB Rivers.
Teams off a MNF game with a bye on deck are 3-10 ATS since 1999 and with Schottenheimer back. Tennessee is 1-6 as a non-division AD.
The Titans found themselves down 16-0 vs the Jets new defensive scheme lsat week before they rallied to tie with 6:00 left in the game. The Titans lacked cohesion under QB Collins who passed for 223 yds (45%) with 2 interceptions and he’ll face a Chargers defense that finished fifth in the NFL with 46 sacks.
San Diego also has plenty of tape on Collins having faced him the last two years with the Raiders and are 4-0 SU & ATS against him. Tennessee now has to take to the road after losing to what must have been viewed as a winnable game to a Chargers defense that allowed 84 ypg rushing (3.5) last year.
San Diego should easily dominate a rebuilding Titans team that actually put Vince Young out on the field for a series and not let up after last year’s disappointing season.
Forecast: San Diego 38 Tennessee 3
Play: Chargers -11½
