Units are variable. 1 unit may be $10 for one person and may be $10,000 for another.

To further clarify, say someone bets 3% of his bankroll on each play and has a starting bankroll of $1,000. Then his unit size is $30. If he likes a play enough to double up on, then he's betting 2 units ($60 or 6%) on that play and so forth...

If someone likes to bet 2% per play and their bankroll is $10,000, then you have a $200 unit size. A 5 unit-play would be 10% of their bankroll ($1,000)

No prob. One other note is that strict unit betting is generally reserved for those players who don't bet according to Kelly, Martingale, and other money management systems to maximize profit, though a general unit structure is still relevant to Kelly. You can read all you ever want about Kelly in the "Handicapper think tank" forum.
