    Big East Weekly Thread 2/11 - 2/17
    Big Monday

    VILLANOVA WILDCATS 14-8 @ GEORGETOWN HOYAS 19-3
    February 11, 7:00 PM | Verizon Center

Georgetown is a very balanced team with 5 players avg over 9 ppg. They are of course lead by 7 foot 2 inch Roy Hibbert who is going to be a lottery pick in the NBA draft when he decides to pursue his career. Dajuan Summers is also a very solid player avg over 11ppg. Jesse Sapp runs the point for the team and he is a very underrated player nationally. Jonathan Wallace is one of the teams biggest three point threats, but many players can stroke it from deep. Patrick Ewing is really devolping his game, he is a good all around player that gives them a spark off the pine.

Georgetown is 5-0 @ home in conference and 12-0 @ home overall. They are an excellent offense team shooting right under 50% from the field. On the otherside of the ball they hold their opponets to a ridic 36%. John Thompson Jr has done a great job with this team. They run the back door play better than anybody in the country, including where he learned it @ Princeton. This squad is still the team to beat in this conference and they want to show their fans this on Monday Night.

Villanova is lead by G Scottie Reynolds who avg just over 16ppg. This kid plays out of control at times, but he is still a stud. This team goes as far as he can take them. They also get contrubutions from Corey Fisher and Dante Cunningham who also avg double figures.

'Nova is the most dissapointing team in the conference. A few weeks ago they were ranked in the top 20 and now they are in danger mode of not making it to NY for the Big East tourney. The Wildcats finally got a win last time out against the Seton Hall Pirates by 2 points, after dropping 5 straight. Villanova is 1-4 SU away in the conference, and 1-9 ATS in conference play overall. Jay Wright just can not get this team to play any defense at all. They are allowing opponets to shoot over 45% and they can only muster up a shooting % of just under 44%. This spells trouble when they meet the Hoyas on Monday night.

The wildcats are going to have trouble guarding Roy Hibbert all night long and the hoyas will take advantage of this. On the otherside of the ball the hoyas will give problems to the wildcats throughout the ball game. 'Nova is going to struggle to score and Gtown should be able to get plenty of easy points in the paint.

    Score Prediction Gtown 72 - 'Nova 57

If the line is 9.5 or lower ill be on the hoyas

Line is at 13.5 ... damn Villanova has fallen off the map! A definite pass on a side for me. Total perhaps depending on where it falls. I'd say Nova plus the pts would be enticing, but they could lose by 20 the way they've been playing.

      PROVIDENCE FRIARS 13-10 @ PITTSBURGH PANTHERS 18-5
February 12, 7:30 PM | Petersen Events Center

Pittsburgh has battled through some huge injuries that I thought would ruin their season. They lost Sr. guard Mike Cook for the season early on along with their spark plug in LeVance Fields. Also lost C Austin Wallace for the season and C Cassin Diggs is out indefinitely as well. Fields should be back for their last few regular season games, and will help this team make a run come tourney time. They come into this matchup fresh off a buzzer beater win against WVU bringing them alot of confidence.

The Panthers play solid defense and are very patience on offense. They hold teams to around 40% shooting from the field, and they shoot over 45%. They are 4-1 SU in conference play @ home and 13-1 overall @ home. That loss was a letdown game against Rutgers. Pittsburgh has a very strong frontcourt lead by Sam Young (17ppg 7rpg) and DeJaun Blair who is 0.3 rpg from avg a double double. These guys attack the glass and play strong interior defense. They can rebound on both ends of the floor and get alot of second chance points. With their top 2 guards hurt they have relied on Keith Benjamin and Ronald Ramon to carry the work load. Ramon can stroke it from deep and is a very streaky shooter. Benjamin has the ablilty to penetrate and find the open guy.

Providence is coming up on an extremely tough stretch of their season. Its going to be a struggle to find any wins from here on out-@Pitt, UL, Gtown,@WVU,@UC,UConn, Nova. The Friars really have a hard time on the defense end of the court. They give up alot of easy buckets, from mental mistakes. On the offense end they can score some points. In late game situations they just can't stop their opponet from scoring.

The Friars are 1-5 SU away in conference play and 3-6 SU in away games. They are coming off a road loss to St. Johns by 2 points. They have very balanced offense attack having five players in double figures. Sometimes they gun way too much, but they are a solid scoring team. They do not rebound the ball very well however, and they can get careless with the ball also.

The Panthers strength is the Friars weakness and that is a huge advantage for the Panthers. They are going to exploit the small lineups Providence likes to play throughtout this matchup. Pittsburgh needs this win to keep pace in the Big East because they have two tough road games coming up @Marq and @ Notre Dame. I look for the Panthers to dominate the glass on both ends of the floor and get some second chance points. Pittsburgh still has enough shooters from distance to present Providence with all sorts of matchup problems from the start.

      Score Prediction : Pitt 74 - Providence 64

Will wait for the line to see if there's a play.

St Joes beat them by 20, but 13.5 is alot to give. It still might be a play for me and Im also waiting for the total. I could see this line dropping a bit also, since it came out a little high IMO.

MARQUETTE GOLDEN EAGLES @ 16-6 SETON HALL PIRATES 15-9
          February 12, 7:30 PM | Prudential Center

Marquette Comes into this matchup in a must win situation. They have lost two straight conference games and they need to get back on track. This team has been tough to figure out all season long, because they show signs that they can play with anybody and then sometimes it seems they forget how to play ball. Tom Crean is a great coach and should have these guys together for this road game.

The Eagles have alot of talent on this team. They are lead by PG Dominic James(13.5ppg) who can do it all. I think he has became a little too unselfish this season. He needs to get back that killer instinct and take over games himself for this team to make a run down the stretch. Jerel McNeal (13ppg) is one of the best defense players in all of college basketball, and also has a very solid offense game. He can really make things happen in the lane, along with a solid stroke from distance. Wesley Matthews also avg double figures. Lazar Hayward has been playing unbelivable ball as of late. Leading the team in scoring and rebounding. He has a sweet stroke from 3 and can score inside the paint as well. This is the guy to watch out for the rest of the way through. The Eagles shoot 45% from the field, and hold their opponets to 40%. This team is going to improve before march.

Seton Hall has been a little bit of a surprise this season in conference play. They went on a nice 5 game run in conf games but after 3 straight loses they seem to have reverted back to form. The Pirates live and die by the 3, and they got some guys who can really stroke it. They can score but they don't play a lick of defense. They are shooting just over 42% but they give up a shooting % of over 44.

The Pirates lead by Brian Laing who does it all on the floor. He is avg almost 20 a game along with 7+ rebounds. He is an outstanding all around player, and deserves recognition nationally. Jeremy Hazell (12ppg) can let it go from deep, this kid really can shoot the 3ball. Eugene Harvey(15ppg) is a nice scorer who is good and splitting the lanes and making things happen. He does a little of everything for coach Bobby gonzalez. Jamar Nutter also avg double digits.

Both teams really need this game. Seton Hall is trying to get a NCAA tourney berth and they can not afford to fall two games under .500 in the conference. The Eagles are trying to avoid dropping 3 straight and falling to .500 in conference play. This is a rematch from earlier in the season when marq was a huge 16 point favorite and won by 5 (61-56).

I think there is a going to be a short price on the Golden Eagles creating some value for the MARQ backers. Ill come back to this when the line comes out.

          Score Prediction: Marq 77 - 'Hall 69

Wow!! Great analysis...I follow the BE relgiously and think your right on with your analysis and predictions...The GTown line is about 5 points over what you had and I'm scratching my head about that line too. Anyways I think it will be a trouncing and will probably take what they give us...Thanks

The best I could do on threading would probably be on the MAAC though I lost on Rider today (won on Niagra)... Have been following that conference through writeups and watching as many games as possible since there always playing on my free time (Fridays and Sundays)... Maybe I could put something together...anyways GL...(except when the Cards play the Mounties)

                    Preview
Roscoe Harris, Jonathan Haynes, Michael Bradley, Shane Clark...who is the next Villanova player to make his name in a Georgetown game?

Such is the peculiar nature of this rivalry, where Villanova has won eight of the last 12 since 1998 and has never lost in Verizon Center since opening the building on December 3, 1997. The games are usually down to the wire, where one team (or sometimes, even Villanova) makes a late mistake to seal the outcome.

A dangerous team when names like Curtis Sumpter, Kyle Lowry, and Mike Nardi patrolled the court, this Villanova year's team is younger and prone to shooting slumps that led to a five game losing streak just broken in a two point win over Seton Hall. Despite a 4-6 conference record that sits just a half game ahead of the dreaded 13th place team that will not qualify for the Big East tournament, the Wildcats are ignored at one's own peril, then or now. They are playing to turn around the season, at an arena that has been more than ideal.

Coaches and TV experts can say otherwise, but Scottie Reynolds is still the catalyst for Villanova this season. When Reynolds is on, Villanova can stand toe to toe with just about anyone, when he sneezes, the team proverbially catches a cold. Such was the case in last years Big East quarterfinals, where Reynolds led the Wildcats from 25 down to lose in the final minute to the Hoyas. Reynolds remains the team's best and most dangerous scorer, but his shooting numbers of late provide some insight into the five game losing streak that has, for now, imperiled a fourth straight NCAA bid on the Main Line. In his last three games, Reynolds is shooting 9 for 31, 7 of 22 from three point range. Villanova needs better shooting from Reynolds to win the close games.

Some better numbers have come from freshman guard Corey Fisher. At 6-1, Fisher is the only other Wildcat in double figures in Big East play, with five double figure games, though not in any consecutive games. Fisher had 13 in Saturday's narrow win over Seton Hall, and will pose a challenge to a Georgetown backcourt that has been stung by outside shooting in recent games.

Villanova elevated junior forward Dwayne Anderson into the starting lineup Saturday, where he responded with 13 points and eight rebounds against Seton Hall. Anderson has not seen as much time in his two years at Villanova and enters Monday's game as somewhat of an unknown quantity. At 6-6, he figures to be challenged by Austin Freeman and Patrick Ewing to prevent drives from the perimeter. Anderson has only five threes all year and is not a usual suspect behind the arc...but in this series, that's no guarantee.

Junior Dante Cunningham and sophomore Casiem Drummond will be active in the pivot. The 6-8 Cunningham leads the team with a 56 percent shooting mark and and even 6.0 rebounds in the Big East play, which will be vital as Drummond will be making only his second Big East start Monday and eighth overall. Drummond, who scored a career high 17 boards against NC State earlier this year, has been bogged down in foul trouble in games this year and is averaging just 16 minutes a game.

Like Louisville, Villanova can burn opponents with good athletes, but unlike Louisville, it's not via all-out defense. Seven of Villanova's 12 Big east opponents this year have shot over 45% from the field, four over 50%. For its part, Villanova has not shot over 45% since January 12, much of it due to Reynolds' erratic numbers. Its rebounding has been spotty, and teams that can get inside have proven successful. The Cats also struggle on the road (2-5), Verizon Center notwithstanding.

Villanova remains an excellent free throw shooting team late in games, so teams don't want to make a foul shooting contest to end a game. Overall, the Wildcats are dangerous but have yet to earn the consistency that can elevate them into the first tier of a tough Big East this year.

Here's a look at some potential matchups:

Jonathan Wallace vs. Corey Fisher. Wallace's shooting struggle continues unabated, but his defense is still producing returns. Look for Fisher to challenge him in penetration and outside as well.
Jessie Sapp vs. Scottie Reynolds. Louisville was able to cash in when Jerry Smith was able to get on Wallace and not Sapp for some clutch shots in that game. Sapp's ability to shut down Reynolds could be the difference between another nail-biter late or an early start to the outbound buses.
Austin Freeman vs. Dwayne Anderson. Freeman's defense continues to improve and will need to be attentive to Anderson, who figures to test Freeman's speed in this one. Anderson shot six of his season 17 threes in the Seton Hall game and will be equally active Monday.
DaJuan Summers vs.Dante Cunningham . Cunningham could have a big day if Summers cannot adjust better than he did Saturday. Offensively, Summers must be more aggressive in setting up screens and driving to the basket.
Roy Hibbert vs. Casiem Drummond. Give Roy the ball. For those that missed that, give Roy the ball. In Georgetown's two wins over Villanova, Hibbert was 8-12, in the loss, 0-0.
GU bench vs. Villanova bench. The Villanova bench has some sleepers that can make things difficult for Georgetown. Watch for Shane Clark (8.1 ppg, 4.8 rpg) off the bench as well as Antonio Pena (8.9 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 52% FG in Big East play).

                    Keys to the game:
                    1. Scottie Reynolds. Keeping reynolds off the ball and off the free throw line are musts.
                    2. Rediscovering The Three. Georgetown is shooting only 16-50 from outside the arc in its last three games. It could be the difference in this one.
                    3. Turnovers. Georgetown traditionally struggles against the Villanova press and after Saturday's poor showing, expect more of the same. In its last home game with Villanova, Georgetown gave up 22 turnovers, one more than they did in the next two combined. Ball possession is a big factor in this game for both teams.

For Villanova to win, it borrows a page from Louisville: it locks down the Georgetown guards, neutralizes Hibbert, and ratchets up the tempo to a game Georgetown cannot come back from. For its part, Georgetown looks to dominate inside, control the passing lanes and get Villanova down early, and keep Reynolds (and a player to be named later) from taking over the game late.

Of course, not every hero wears Villanova blue in this series, but it's time for some heroes in gray to step to the forefront.

I capped the Gtown game at 129 and the line came out 134, So Im liking the under. The spread has dropped to 12 and might even drop to 11.5/11 before the game with action going on nova. I look for the under to drop as wel.. Im waiting for the total to open at Bet Jam but Im liking the under, what you guys think? I don't think there is going to be much fouling late in the game, so the under should be a solid play.

                              February 12, 9:00 PM | Allstate Arena

Louisville comes into this game smoking hott. Last week they went 3-0 including a win against #6 ranked Georgetown. The Cards started the season off slow, dealing with major injuries on the front line, but now they are healthy and thriving. They have won 12 of 15 and are only 1 game back in the conference standings. Rick Pitino's pressure Defense is really something fun to watch. Louisville is one of the best Defensive teams in the nation holding teams to under 38% shooting from the floor. They offense is also very solid avg just under 45% shooting and many players can score.

The Cards are lead by 5th year senior David Padgett who is one of the best bigs in the country. Everytime he touches the ball something good happends. He has an excellent post game and passes just as good as any body out of the double team. The guy is really a remarkable story, with all the injuries he has overcame. He had surgery on both knees for torn ligaments throughout his career. Then he broke both knee caps earlier this season and there was talk his career was over. However he is Louisville's captain and the key to the teams success. This team is one of the deepest teams in the country also. Jerry Smith can light it up from down town , just ask Georgetown. T Will (Terrence Williams) can do it all. He has two trible doubles this season and just missed a few more. E5 (Earl Clark) almost avg a double double himself, and is a streaky scorer. DC (Derrick Caracter) is a player who can really score underneath. He is not as consistent as he should be, but still a assest to our team. Edgar Sosa has really improved of late and runs the show for this team. If he keeps this play up this team can really do some damage down the stretch. They also get contributions from Tello(Juan Palacios), Preston Knowles, and Andre McGee.

DePaul has dropped 4 of 5 before winning their last game @ home against South Florida. They are shooting 43% from the floor , but giving up over 45% shooting. The Blue Demons are at a point in the season where they are just looking for a few more wins just to book a ticket to MSG for the Big East Tournament. With their schedule they have left, wins are going to be tough to come by.

The Blue Demons are lead by Draelon Burns who avg over 17ppg. They do get production from other players as well having 4 more players avg over 9ppg. Dar Tucker, Mac Koshwal ,Karron Clarke, and Will Walker.

Louisville has way too much fire power for this Depaul team. I do not expect any kind of let down from the cards because the Gtown win means nothing if they can win these games the rest of the way through. The Cards just do not allow teams to score over 60 points and I don't expect Depaul to reach this figure either. Louisville has a nice edge in rebounding and that will allow for second chance points combined with alot of one and dones for the Blue Demons.

                              Score Prediction : 'Ville 74 - DePaul 55

Hoping for a line of about 8.5-9.5

I guess the refs bet on the under as well. They didn't want any chance of the score going over because of an OT or two ... maybe they should have just given G'town 2 points at the end and just called the game with a few seconds left. Would have been just about an genuine as the phantom foul with .001 seconds remaining ...

                                                    February 13, 7:00 PM | Gampel Pavilion

This is the featured game for the week for the Big East Conference.

Notre Dame has been one of the pleasent surprises of the season not just in the conference but nationally as well. They come into this game with only two conferences losses both on the road @ Gtown and @ Marquette. This team is tied for 1st in the loss colum with Gtown. This team is going to be tough for anyone to defend.

The irish can really score avg over 80 points a game. Their leader is Big Man Luke Harangody(20ppg 10rpg) is the leading canidate for Big East player of the year. Kyle McAlarney (15ppg) is their best shooter and can also handle the rock. He has the ability to pull up from anywhere off the bounce. Rob Kurz is also a very productive player avg 12 points and 8 rpg. Notre Dame does everything well, they rebound, shoot the 3, they are solid from the line, and they really pass the ball around.

UConn is one of the hottest teams in the country riding a 7 game winning streak into this matchup. Jim Calhoun has done an unbelievable job with this team by getting his guys to understand the importance of defense. They are holding opponets to under 38% shooting from the field, while they are connecting on over 46% of their shoots. They are doing this all without suspended Guard Jerome Dyson who was their leading scorer. Uconn is 7-2-1 ATS in conf play at home and 4-1 SU.

One of the biggest reasons of the Huskies success is the play of Hasheem Thabeet. He was always a great shot blocker but now he is also avg almost 12 ppg and 8 boards. A.J. Price runs the show for this team, and is one of the best players in the conference. This kid does it all and wants the ball in his hands late in the contest. The suspension of J Dyson forced AJ to step up and be more aggressive especially on the offensive end, and he has done just that. He is avg over 14 pgg 4 boards and 6 assists. Jeff Adrien is a physical big man who brings some strength under the glass. He is avg just under 15pgg and 10 rpg, and has been a major factor in their current 7 game winning streak.

What a game this is going to be! The key matchup is going to be Luke Harangody going against Hasheem Thabeet. That is going to be fun to watch. The advantage has to go to Uconn just because they are at home but this might be a game you just wanna sit back and enjoy without making a play.

                                                    Score Prediction : Uconn 70 - ND - 69

                                                      Georgetown/ Villanova Recap

This game was a little tighter than expected. Scottie Reynolds hit some big shots earlier that kept them in the game. Everytime it looked like the hoyas were going to put them to sleep, nova some how hung around. Georgetown did not play the best by no means, but their defense played good enough to win. We still covered the ML and the under easily although we were assisted by a very questionable call with 0.1 sec left in the game. It was a light foul, but you just can't make that call that far away from the basket.

We saw a bit of a hangover from Georgetown after their loss to Louisville, but they are still one of the best teams in the country and are holding on to first place in the conference. As for the wildcats, their struggles continued. They could not buy a basket in the second half, although played pretty solid on the defensive end. Nova still has work to do this season just to get an invitation to the Big East Tourney. Congrats on those who followed Gtown ML and the under 134.

The Notre Dame @ UCONN game played out as expected. It was a close game all the way through, and the Huskies prevailed. I thought the 5 point spread was enough to cover for the Irish but we fell one point shy. Luke Harangody went off last night for 32 points and 16 rebounds and continued to make his push for Big East player of the year. AJ Price lite up the Irish dropping 26 points and 9 assists. Jeff Adrien was a rebound shy of a double double and Hasheem Thaabeet had 6 blocks to go along with his 10 boards. UCONN extended their winning streak to 8 games, and continue to impress the nation doing all this without their leading scorer Jerome Dyson.

CinCinnati had no problem handling the jonnies @ home. They were lead by J Williamson who had 25 and 11. Cincy now has 5 more wins in the conference than all of last season, Mick Cronin had done a great job with that team.

Syracuse came out flat on the road against USF and that is something you just can't do in the Big East. K Gransberry is one of the more underrated players in the conference, this big man can really play. He had 23 points and helped out his couterpart D Jones who dropped 29 on the legendary 2-3 zone. USF exploited that zone shooting over 57% from the floor including 47% from distance. The cuse still shot over 53% but only 61% from the strike, it was a big difference in the game. Disapointed in the Orange's Defensive effort but it happends on the road in the conference play from time to time.
