A dream final four is now followed by a dream championship, as top seed Rafael Nadal and No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic, who will be No. 1 and No. 2 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings on Monday, will battle it out for the BNP Paribas Open title.
Nadal, who returned to No. 1 after last year’s Roland Garros title, has not let go of the spot ever since, and comes into the final having only lost one set in five matches (against Ivo Karlovic in the quarter-finals). He defeated one of the hottest players (Juan Martin del Potro) of the last month in the semi-finals. Now he is chasing his first ATP World Tour title since Tokyo last October and his third BNP Paribas Open title, having won here in the last two odd years, 2007 and 2009. He is an impressive 31-4 at this tournament. Nadal has a career finals record of 43-13 (18-6 in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 finals).

Djokovic, who is ranked No. 3, beat No. 2 Roger Federer in the semi-finals and will switch spots with the Swiss on the new rankings (it will be Djokovic’s 27th overall week at No. 2, his first 26 all coming last year). Djokovic lost just 12 games in his first four matches here and in his fifth, against Federer in the semi-finals, was pushed but prevailed in three sets, 63 36 62. He is now an amazing 17-0 on the season (19-0 going back to December Davis Cup final), winning his second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open and capturing his 20th career title in Dubai last month. He is after his second BNP Paribas Open title, having won here in 2008 (he has an excellent record here too, 21-4). Djokovic is 20-13 in career finals (5-6 in ATP World Tour Masters 1000 finals).
After his win over Federer, Djokovic commented on regaining the No. 2 ranking: “It makes me feel great. It’s the crown for my achievements this year. I think I deserve it. I think I’ve played the best tennis of my life in the last three months. I have been very dedicated and very professional and I want to keep on going.”
Nadal leads in their head-to-head series, 16-7, including 5-0 in finals, although Djokovic leads their hard court head-to-head, 7-5. Nadal has won their last two meetings, both on hard courts (in four sets in last year’s US Open final and in straight sets at last November’s Barclays ATP World Tour Finals). They have met twice at this event, Nadal winning in the 2007 final (62 75) and Djokovic winning in the 2008 semi-finals (63 62).
“I have played Nadal many times, and many times in the late stages of tournaments, especially in the semis and finals of the major events,” Djokovic said ahead of the final. “I know how it feels to play him, so I will be prepared. I want this trophy as much as he wants it, so we’ll both step on the court wanting that win.”
