MJ picked a person that:

A) plays the same position

B) has the same basic bodytype
(Jordan 6'6" 215lbs. Bryant 6'6" 209 lbs.
James 6'8" 250 lbs.) different body, different game.

C) Kobe modeled his game after MJ's...
it is SO similar

in KOBE, MJ basically is looking in the mirror and saying..
"hmm.... i think this guy is pretty good-looking"

ok so these NBA players don't know how to judge talent too

they know a lot better than us because they actually compete with them, they know who's harder to defend etc

he gets blocked or shut down.. all the time..

it is a physical game.. do not think to imagine that results are the same
with that enormous factor removed from the game.

James and Bryant are NOT the same height or weight
the bigger you are… the slower you are

for a 6'8" player... 250 lbs.. James is super quick.
tack on 45 lbs to Bryant, and he is MUCH slower

notice again that Wade and Kobe are SAME height,
play same position... same size… same kind of threat

some players can still perform at a high level when they become older because they developed the other aspects of their game when they're athletic abilities are declining, look at MJ he was able to perform at a great level and won 3 championships when he was past his prime during 96-98 season, kobe has lost some of his athletic abilities now but he developed his jumpshot to still be a force. look at all of his batchmates in the draft, how many can still perform at his level to be in the discussion of being top 3 in the league?
his competitors before were
tmac( he lost his athleticism because of injuries and now doesn't even have a team)
VC ( another one look at him now not even one of the top 15 in the league)
pierce (top 15 at most but definitely not top 10)
AI ( not even in the league right now)
ray allen ( playing the role of a shooter not the number 1 option anymore)
KG( not top 20)
TD ( solid performer but not in the top 5 anymore)
there are lots more that came in the same decade with kobe but they haven't been able to sustain the great perfomance as they age
