I agree with you that if there's no measning in the game it would seem almost stupid to try and cap it, but don't you think that with a game like this - rookies vs sophomores, there's an element of one wanting to beat the other for pride. If that's true, then talent level does play a factor and I think the rookies have the edge so the 12 points is a gift.

Easy cover? No it won't be an easy cover, but if you have to choose I would pick rookies atm. Over looks more tempting than picking side.
