if you need a simple explanation, when i was first getting into gambling my uncle explained it like this, and this helped me understand it.

whatever side you pick, the game starts wuth that score.

for example Lakers -5.5 vs. Kings +5.5
if you bet the lakers, the score starts off at
Lakers -5.5 vs Kings 0
if you bet the kings
the score starts off at
lakers 0. vs. Kings 5.5

in order to win a lakers bet they have to win by AT LEAST 6, to win a kings bet they have to lose by NO MORE THAN 5

this always helped me remember how it worked.
