#844Hey Mike,
I know this may be a simpleton question but I just want to make sure my book is grading these correctly (they've screwed me in the past). Does this look correct?

#846Ugh...Bad day...Time to throw out the regular handicapping and just cap for who will be in front.I made the mistake of thinking Saratoga was playing semi fairly but after today it looks like you better be 1st or within a length or two turning for home.Comment -

So I pretty much feel like I lost even though, phantom money loss painsComment -

#852I hear ya...I'm was a fan of Bretton Woods last year. One of the better NY breds and I thought Hysterical Cat was done once left Pletcher's barn but guess the speedball is going to make some noise in short turf sprints.Comment -

#853I'm new still, don't have much confidence in my selections, but I will learn. Especially when its a 15-1 shot, don't have to hit those that often.

#855This is all assuming that speed will do well today
Monday 7/25
Saratoga
Race 1--Hard to get past the two favorites but the 4-Fire Assay(8-1) has been working lights out for this and comes back from the layoff after a good race where she ran against the bias throughout and still held 3rd.I'll play her to W/P and key in an Exacta Box with 1,2,3.If the favorites run 1-2 so be it.
W/P--4
EX BX--4/1,2
RESULT---4 Ran out ///Looked like a prep as she contested the pace and then threw in the towel very early.
Race 2--Another one where its really hard to get past atleast the favorite 5-Freedom Rings(2-1).Who is dropping out of Grade 2's and 3's to get what looks like get a confidence booster. The only way a case can be made for someone else is if the 2-Sounds Familiar can steal it stretching out from sprints or the 3-Go Unbridled jumps up huge first time on turf.I guess if I had to bet the race I would put a Trifecta together with the 5 on top of 1,2,3,4.
TRI--5/1,2,4/1,2,4
RESULT///Came 1-4-5 in a downpour.ALL RACES OFF THE TURF SO DID ALL THIS FOR NADA.DISREGARD EVERYTHING AFTER THE 1ST RACE.
Race 3--Adding to the common theme so far , the favorites looks tough.A Pletcher 2 year old with Johnny V. up and she is sired by Tale Of The Cat, who is one of the premier first out sires.Adding more fuel to the favorite fire is the 2nd choice being by Speightstown and trained by Assmussen with Ramon in the saddle. The only flicker of hope is the 5-Siberian Wildcat(5-1).She is by Wildcat Heir who might be the best 1st out sire there is but Contessa isn't in the other two trainers league when it comes to winning right out of the gate.I'd take a flyer on her to W/P but not too confident.
W/P--5
Race 4--Finally a spot where we can try to beat the favorite somewhat confidently. While the fave looks good , he draws the outside post 11 and while good there are a few others that are just as fast. The problem we run into though is some of the horses that I would like to go against him with are going to be coming off the pace and the track hasn't been kind to those types to say the least.A couple horses that might be able to be up front are the 9-American Classic(6-1) and 10-Golden Weekend(5-1) who is first off the claim for Rudy Rodriguez(33%).Then if a suicidal pace ensues 8-Ever A Friend(5-1) and 4-Hot Money(6-1) can capitalize.A bomb that might be worth a play is the 2-Lil O's Expression(30-1).Only have to be right once a century for that one to be profitable.I'll hope someone scratches out of the top 4 picks so I can just box the 3 others but if not I guess the 8 or 9 is my key for the EX BX.
EX BX--9/4,8,10 or 8/4,9,10
W/P/S--2
Race 5--The favorite is going to scratch after running yesterday so that leaves the 9 as the fave moving from a maiden claimer to a maiden special. No thanks.I landed on the 7-Tycoon Cat(5-1) who does that same class move and has had his fair share of chances but he has routed and sprinted on the turf. This is the first time he will be sprinting on the dirt and he goes first off the claim for a pretty sharp trainer with that angle. He also fits on figures too so I'm hoping he gets overlooked by the public because he has failed more than anyone else in the field.I'll also use the 2 in an EX BX.
W/P--7
EX BX--7/2
Race 6--Pletcher continues his world domination here with the lukewarm favorite who is impeccably bred to run on the turf and win right off the bat(Kittens Joy).Pletcher is just loaded once again with 2 yr olds.It is getting kind of old.I guess I'll take a shot with 8-Delightful Song(10-1) going 2nd out for Mark Casse who has been on fire at Woodbine this year. She showed speed in her first start at Woodbine and held well despite being 6 wide. Also worked very well over the turf a week and a half ago.Plus sire Half Ours has been unbelievable with his 2 yr old win rate from a small sample. If I play an Exacta I'll use 7-Run A Risk,6-Volcat,and if you want to try to beat the fave 9-Dancin N Prancin.
W/P--8
EX BX--8/7,6,9
Race 7--This is the race where it will be obvious there is a bias if any of the speedballs win.4-Turfiste(20-1) and 2-Scorper(8-1) stretch out after running in turf sprints for a while.I also think trainer David Jacobson is making a point to be competitive at the spa for the first time.He is running horses a tad below their competitive level and already has one winner. He stretches out 5-I Ain't No Saint(10-1) after running well against better horses.Maybe I will take a swing for the fences and box those three or a safe play would be to key the favorite 10-Beacon Hill Road(3-1) with them in an EX BX.
EX BX 4,2,5 or 10/4,2,5
Race 8--Its too bad Johannesburg Smile is going to scratch after running a couple days ago on the turf.He is pretty good on the main track and at 8-1 would have been a nice play. Now its going to be really hard to beat the 1A-Friend Or Foe(4-5) who destroyed Ny breds last year. The 6-Stormy's Majesty and 7-Spa City Fever do have speed on their side and at 5-1 and 10-1 might be the value. If the track was fair the 5-Icabad Crane would have a big chance to close them down.
EX BX 1A,6,7
Fair Track
EX BX 5/1A,6,7
Race 9--Maybe the best betting race on the card as the favorite takes a suspicious drop after being competitive at a much higher level. There are a couple really interesting bombs in here. One is the 12-Untamed Glory(12-1) who goes third off the bench and has the speed to get position despite the bad post.As with the 4th race the other once a century horse is 3-Annie's Melody(50-1) who is the dominant speed but has never gone this far.She was supposed to be a good thing being purchased for 250k and running in the GI Frizette as a 2 yr old but never panned out.Back to D Jacobson again who drops 5-Lemon Drop On Top(6-1) who has progressed in every start and should sit a perfect trip right off the speed. The last pieces to the puzzle for me are 11-Hey Hey Mama(9-2) for the hot M Casse and 8-Pale Starlight(12-1) who goes for Calabrese/Canani.The key for me would be the 5 over the 12,11,8 and a W/P/S stab on the 3.
EX BX--5,12,11
