Theodore would have been nice for the over...
Starting Varlamov was a risky but very wise move for the Caps IMO.

Varlamov has played 6 nhl games. Although he has played well in those games, what kind of message does that send to your team and your starting goaltender? Obviously this is a must win game but I just can't see Varlamov taking them all the way.

They need to score 1 before they can score 3, I bet the under in game one and Theodore fukked me, this is the way I expected game 1 to be - low scoring.

No one thought Cam Ward could either.
You think Jose Theodore and his terrible 2.84 GAA and .900 SV% was going to take them all the way? If you watched the game, all 4 goals were stoppable.
Theodore is terrible. Varlamov is absolutely unproven, but has a lot more upside and in his small sample size has looked great. I'll take unproven with great signs over PROVEN to be a poor goalie.
It isn't 2002 anymore. Theodore has been a total sieve for 5 of the last 7 years.

Varlamov's numbers are not much better than Theodore's . While I agree Lundqvist is a better goalie than both of them, Theodore gives them a better chance to win. Cam Ward is an exceptional goalie. I have watched Varlamov play this season, he is nothing special and he is definitely no Cam Ward. Theodore has had troubles post lockout and had to change his playing style the past few years, but you can not argue that he has carried his team to the playoffs the past two seasons. I could have understood playing Johnson if he was healthy.

I don't think Lunqvist has had to make a lot of difficult saves so far. Rangers D is frustrating the Caps.

The caps as a team seem panicked. Which is what happens when you start a rookie goalie in game 2 of the stanley cup playoffs.

Lundqvist is playing really well. I don't understand how a goalie who plays so deep in his net can be so effective.

I didn't mean to say Varlamov was = to Ward.
Disagree with your statements though. He didn't carry Washington to the playoffs at all this year; he wasn't even in the top 30 in GAA or SV%. Washington simply outscored their opponents.
In 07-08 with the Avalance, he did have a strong regular season, but was very mediocre in the playoffs: .906/3.15
In 06-07, he had a TERRIBLE regular season .891/3.26, and then a bad playoffs to .902/3.15.
Also, you can argue that Varlamov shouldn't be in there due to experience, but you can't say his numbers aren't "that much better". Despite meaning very little in only 6 games, shaving 0.47 off GAA and adding 0.18 to the SV% IS a lot better.

This game was unwatchable for me once the Rangers scored the first goal, I bet Wash in regulation, they may still tie and win the game in O/T but I doubt they score 2 goals in the 3rd period as needed for me to cash.
I'm watching basketball.

I don't disagree, my point is I have little chance of cashing my Wash regulation wager, so I'll watch the Cavs/Pistons where I still have a chance.

I guess we will see. I just think people shortchange Theodore. Perhaps I am biased. The Caps do score a lot of goals, I think some of that has to do with the confidence they have in their goalie. They are obviously shook right now and out of sync. One other thing, the last rookie goalie before Ward to go all the way was Roy in 1986.

No, yee of reality.
They haven't scored a goal in 46 minutes and looks like they will be shutout at home and go to NY down 0-2.
