I like the new angle you've brought to me with live bets. Normally, I just played on Betfair & Betdaq with straight-up wagers - this year I hope to take advantage of the live angle as well -- ThanX

As you've seen, I'm a volume better in hockey. I find that it best suits my style. I'll be keeping good records this year to see exactly where I finish at the end of the season. I've always ended up in the black, but never really knew how much because of the withdraws I make throughout the season.

This old dog is looking fwd to learning a few new triX.

A couple thoughts/points people should know before the start of the season and to get the debate going.

Most teams will play 48 games in 99 days. As a result schedule and travel are both keys this year. The two things to look at are back to backs and total miles traveled. Minnesota will travel the most miles this years. Several teams will play 12 sets of back to back games this year. Two of them off the top of my head are Chicago and Detroit. The aging Detroit squad will be pretty gased on the second night in those 12 games. Could be some nice value there. Also Winnipeg has the toughest travel schedule in the Eastern conference.

History tells us that younger teams will fair better. Playing every other night will wear the older guys down. See the work stoppage 94-95 season for reference.

If you're going to bet season point totals or division winners. Depth will be a key. Expect a lot of injuries to aging players and all players in general. Oldest teams in the league are Detroit, Florida, and New Jersey. Some Young rosters to watch are Colorado, Edmonton, and Buffalo.

Also be wary of teams that made a lot of personell moves or have new coaches. These guys are going to have a 7 day training camp to get to know eachothers playing styles. If it's a new coach they have 7 days to install a new system. New coaches that did not coach their team in 11-12 are Edmonton, Washington, Calgary, and Montreal. Some teams that made big personell changes: Minnesota and Dallas.

I think because of this general lack of organization overs will be a good bet for the first week. Players won't be conditioned and will take penalties. Systems won't be in place and there will be defensive breakdowns. Goalies will be rusty and you'll see a few softies. Generally early in the year overs are good. This could be a great first couple weeks for them. Also the NHL is supposedly going to have their refs crack down on obstruction again to increase scoring. Scoring has been trending down the past few years and we were in another dead puck era as of last year.

Check to see where players have been during the lockout. Some have been on the couch while others have been in Europe. TSN.ca has a list for each team in their season preview. A team that I really like because of this is Edmonton. Their top line and a few of their defenders all played together in the AHL during the lockout.

There are also some big name young guys who aren't currently signed that bear watching for the next week. Subban in Mtl, Benn in Dal, and O'Reily in Col still need to be inked.

I really am unsure if Luongo will be moved or not before the season starts. My gut says no he will not be. I picture maybe a few weeks into the season it will happen.

Colorado to win the NorthWest is way undervalued at +1700

Prob gonna put half a unit on that.

Young team. Best travel schedule in the division. Most of the roster remains intact.

Probably a smart idea for the most part. Will be mostly the Sedins scoring for the Canucks until Kesler is back. Schneider more = unders. Luongo = overs (if he's still on the team).

Definitely some value. Their young core is solid. 1 in 5 chance in a shortended season, for sure can see why you would take a shot.

Saturday Play

PIT/PHI Over 5.5 (-120)

-First game of the new season, a nationally broadcast game on NBC and a huge rivalry game. You better believe Bettman wants a high scoring, exciting game to "get fans back on board." These teams hate each other as it is so I think there will be a ton of PP's. Word on the street is the refs will be cracking down hard on the obstruction calls this year so I expect the refs to set the precedence early, on what will be called a penalty. Again I believe that the D and goalies will take the longest to come around and get into game shape after a long layoff. Fleury did not play in Europe and with Mr. Universe you know an implosion is always a possibility. 6+ goals and 100+ PIM is what I'm expecting.
