NHL eyeing mid-January return for shortened season

    By Mollie Walker

    December 4, 2020 | 2:42pm | Updated

The NHL now has its sights on a mid-January start date with a 52- or 56-game schedule, according to multiple reports Friday.
Between the necessary time for training camp – including the head start promised to the seven teams that did not compete at this summer’s expanded playoffs – the COVID-19 quarantine protocols in some markets and the financial stalemate between the NHL and NHL Players Association, the league’s target start date of Jan. 1 quickly became unfeasible.
There hasn’t been much reported progress regarding the NHL’s request for players to defer an additional 16 percent of base compensation for the season, as well as raise the escrow cap from 20 percent to 25 percent.
Both sides, however, have begun to take some strides on the non-economic issues on the season.
TSN reported that the NHL and NHLPA conducted meetings Thursday night, in which the league inquired about a mid-January start for the first time. A 52-game and 56-game schedule were both discussed as options as well.
With a full 82-game season seemingly out of the question, the league has also reportedly considered a 48-game season.

The hope is that training camps for all 31 NHL teams would start around Jan. 2, according to The Athletic. Seven-day voluntary pre-camps for the Ducks, Kings, Sharks, Senators, Red Wings, Sabres and Devils sre still on the table, per the report.
Commissioner Gary Bettman said Wednesday in an interview with Sports Business Journal that the start date is “influenced largely by what we’re hearing from the medical experts.” He noted that the league’s main focus is finding a way to get back on a normal schedule, a season that runs from October to April, by next fall.
“COVID is going through a second wave, which could be worse than the first wave, and between Thanksgiving and the aftermath and what they think is going to happen for Christmas and the aftermath, we are taking our time and making sure as we look to ways to move forward,” Bettman said. “We are focused on health and safety and doing the right things.”

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman warned players Wednesday they are likely going to have to pay one way or another to make up for the league's projected lost revenue whenever the 2020-21 season gets underway.
Speaking on a Sports Business Journal panel, Bettman stressed the NHL is not attempting to reopen the collective bargaining agreement some five months after it was extended. Instead, he said, the fiscal realities amid the pandemic mean the 50-50 revenue-sharing split between owners and players will be affected for at least the near future.
And that means players will have to bear the brunt of any shortfall to owners.

Greg Wyshynski wrote that the league is mulling a switch to a four-division format for the 2020-21 season only based on geography to reduce travel. Since the Canadian border is closed to non-essential travel, Wyshynski reported there will be a seven-team all-Canadian division, plus eight-team East, Central, and West divisions.

The Philadelphia Flyers, as expected, are in the East Division. However, there are a few notable surprises.
First and foremost, the Pittsburgh Penguins are not in the East. It’s hard to fathom a season where the Penguins don’t compete against the Flyers and other typical Metropolitan rivals like the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers, but when the league is attempting to cut down travel it makes sense.

When the NHL and NHL Players' Association ratified a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) in July ahead of the league's restart, it presumably meant there would be labor peace not just through the pandemic, but through 2026, when the new deal expires.
The peace didn't even last four months without problems arising, as a couple weeks ago the league's owners reportedly asked the NHLPA to defer more salary and increase the escrow cap due to the likelihood that much of the season will be played without fans in attendance.
Players say they were "blindsided" by the request, as from their perspective, the 2020-21 season likely not being a normal one had already been accounted for in the negotiations that took place over the summer.
While it doesn't seem like the owners have much of a leg to stand on, the two sides are now engaged in a staring contest that, along with other logistical issues, has already caused the target start date for the season to be moved from Jan. 1 to Jan. 15.
It should come as no surprise to anyone that one of the owners who is reportedly most upset about the current situation is Jeremy Jacobs.
What is mildly surprising is where his anger is directed. According to Larry Brooks of the New York Post, the Bruins owner, who is also the chairman of the NHL's board of governors, is among a group of owners who are "livid" at NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly.

Vegas Golden Knights owner Bill Foley is confident the NHL will resume in 2021 but isn't sure it will be by Jan. 15.
A recent report from TSN's Pierre LeBrun indicates the league is moving on from its original Jan. 1 target and a mid-January start is being discussed between the NHL and NHLPA.

The NHL is working on plans to temporarily realign for this season that would include one division for the seven Canadian teams, Commissioner Gary Bettman said Tuesday.

Commissioner Bettman said the realignment would likely be necessary because of travel restrictions between the United States and Canada aimed at controlling the spread of the coronavirus.

Commissioner Bettman said, "For us to return to play, we're not going to play 82 games, obviously, and we have travel issues because of the restrictions at the border between Canada and the U.S. You can't go back and forth, so we're actually going to have to realign.

Any realignment plan would have to be approved by the NHL Board of Governors.

An all-Canadian division would include the Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and Winnipeg Jets.

The 24 U.S.-based teams will likely be separated into three divisions, with eight teams in each.

Commissioner Bettman said a start date for the season and the number of games each team will play have yet to be agreed upon.

                        --------------------------------

My added comment: Last I heard, they were thinking 56-game season.

The NHL and NHL Players' Association have cleared their financial hurdles and are pushing forward with planning talks for the 2020-21 season.
The sides are now aiming for a Jan. 13 start date, with either a 52- or 56-game schedule, sources confirmed to ESPN. The sides have communicated daily since Thursday, and the hope is to finalize a plan by the end of the week. That plan -- which will include temporary divisional realignment, schedules and coronavirus protocols -- must be approved by the NHL's board of governors and the NHLPA's executive board.

Wayne Gretzky Ultra-Rare Gem Mint 10 1979 Rookie Card Auctions for Record $1.29M

A rare Wayne Gretzky rookie card has set the record for the most expensive hockey card to ever be sold at auction.
According to TMZ Sports, Heritage Auctions sold a Gem Mint 10 1979 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky rookie card for $1.29 million.
Heritage Auctions noted there are only two Gem Mint 10 O-Pee-Chee Gretzky rookie cards known to be in existence, primarily because O-Pee-Chee's card-cutting process meant many of the cards were cut poorly.
Aside from the rarity of a Gem Mint 10, the fact that Gretzky is unquestionably the greatest player in hockey history helps the card's value immensely.
The Great One burst onto the scene in the NHL in 1979-80, racking up 51 goals and 86 assists for 137 points in his debut season in the league as a member of the Edmonton Oilers.

Over the course of a 20-year NHL career with the Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers, Gretzky set NHL career records across the board with 894 goals, 1,963 assists and 2,857 points.
No. 99 is also a nine-time Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP, 10-time Art Ross Trophy winner as the NHL's leading point-scorer, four-time Stanley Cup champion and two-time Conn Smythe Trophy winner as playoff MVP.
Any and all Gretzky collectibles and memorabilia are highly sought-after to this day, but a Gem Mint 10 O-Pee-Chee rookie card may be the holy grail for collectors, which explains a price tag in excess of $1 million.

Nobody in sports repeats their mistakes quite like the NHL, the league that lost the entire 2004-05 season to a lockout, then came back in 2012 and had another lockout that cost half a season, all after also having half the 1994-95 season wiped out by a lockout.

You might think that getting horrendous publicity and an Alberta provincial inquiry into skipping to the front of the line for vaccines during a pandemic would be the one mistake that even the NHL couldn’t make again.

                                      You would be wrong.

Longtime hockey reporter John Shannon tweeted on Thursday, “Source confirms that the NHL is planning the private purchase of a COVID vaccine for all constituents involved in the potential upcoming season.”

slow news day in hockey, while jonesing I dug up this:

Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky are two of the greatest players in NHL history and the fact they played in the same era made the 1980s and 1990s a great time to be a hockey fan.

Both of these legendary players had huge nights on this date, December 12, 1986.

Mario Lemieux had four goals and two assists in the Penguins’ 8-3 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. His six points tied a team record for the most in a single game. He had racked up the third hat trick of his career before the game was even 14 minutes old.

On that same night, out west, Wayne Gretzky factored into three goals in the Edmonton Oilers’ 6-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. This gave him 902 assists in his career and he only needed 584 games to get there.

It was sad that Super Mario had his career shortened.

He was absolutely fantastic and could've challenged Gretzky on some of the records.

Kings turning page on rebuilding phase, McLellan says: report

Coach thinks long-term players should be 'excited to hear that'

Todd McLellan said he feels the Los Angeles Kings are turning the page on their rebuilding phase.

Last season, McLellan's first as coach of the team, the Kings finished in 14th place in the Western Conference (29-36-5, .450 points percentage) and did not make the Stanley Cup Qualifiers. Los Angeles has missed the postseason in four of the past six seasons and has not won a Stanley Cup Playoff series since winning the Cup in 2014.
"The players that are coming back this year, they're long-term players for us," McLellan told the Los Angeles Times in comments published Saturday. "I heard (general manager) Rob Blake talk to each of the individuals saying, 'Listen, we are basically done with the initial phase of the rebuilding.' We've moved players around and out and brought different players in. It's time to turn the ship and let's start growing all of this.
"If I'm one of the five long-term veterans coming back (forwards Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Jeff Carter, defenseman Drew Doughty and goalie Jonathan Quick), I got to be excited to hear that."
The Kings acquired defenseman Olli Maatta from the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 4 and forward Lias Andersson from the New York Rangers on Oct. 7. They also selected center Quinton Byfield with the No. 2 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, and he, along with center Alex Turcotte, the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, could make an impact this season.
"The additions of Byfield and Lias Andersson to the prospect pool, that's pretty exciting," McLellan said. "And then with that being said, there's a number of young prospects that are a year older, a year stronger, a year hungrier that are going to push as well.
"That's signaling that we're trying to make our team better and trying to push now up the hill rather than just waiting. Do we want to move forward and grow the program and push the team forward and push up the standings? Of course we do."
The Kings won seven straight games before last season was paused on March 12. They have not played a game since March 11.
"At that point in the season, we were doing a lot of things right structurally and team-wise, and we were getting rewarded for it," McLellan said. "So we know it's somewhere in the bank. We just have to go and draw on it again."
An official start date for the season has not yet been announced, but McLellan said the Kings will be prepared despite the long layoff.
"We'll be in a good spot, we won't have any excuses," he said. "And we'll be as ready as we possibly can. Will that be conducive for winning games? We sure hope so. But we have to take the test. Until we take the test we don't know."

Dec.13 This Day in Hockey History

Here’s what Gretzky did on this day (3 separate years):

December 13, 1983 – Scored his 300th career goal…in his 350th game (in an 8-5 Oilers loss to the Islanders). That’s almost an average of a goal per game.

December 13, 1985 – Scored two goals and added two assists, giving him 1,200 career points. Guess how many games he had played to that point. Well, it’s 504. That’s 2.38 points per game for his entire career up to that point. The Oilers beat the Jets 6-3.

December 13, 1989 – Recorded an assist to extend his team-record assist streak to 17 games. He had 35 total in the streak, good for two per game. Not bad (his Kings beat the Whalers 5-2).

Even without an agreement in place, the migration is on.
NHL players have started flooding back into their playing cities in anticipation of a season that is expected to see training camps open early in the new year, particularly those coming from Europe.
Joe Thornton ended his stint with HC Davos in Switzerland and boarded a flight to Toronto on Monday. That came one day after his Maple Leafs teammate Rasmus Sandin travelled back from his native Sweden. Last week Jacob Markstrom, Elias Lindholm and Joakim Nordstrom made their way to Calgary together.

Wow, who says sports cards are dead?

Perhaps the NHL learned from watching the MLB’s fiasco last summer and avoided lengthy public bickering about financial details in the midst of a pandemic. The negotiations between the NHL and its players’ association —that were mentioned here last week — wrapped up quickly. According to this report from The Athletic, both sides agreed to proceed into the upcoming season while honoring the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed in June, extending the collective-bargaining agreement that was already in place.
                                                      The current plan

That same article referenced above says that the NHL is aiming for a 56-game schedule which would begin on Jan. 13, 2021.

Sticks, gloves, jerseys worth $500,000 were taken from home of Hall of Famer's father

Two arrests were made after Wayne Gretzky sports memorabilia was stolen from the Branford, Ontario, home of his father, Walter.

The Brantford Police Service charged a 58-year-old man from Oakville with theft and possession of more than $5,000, and a 58-year-old woman from Brockville with fraud more than $5,000 and breach of trust in a joint investigation with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the assistance of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
Memorabilia including game-used sticks, hockey gloves, pants, jerseys and a Player of the Year award was recovered with the estimated value believed to be worth more than $500,000 USD.

                                                        The investigation remains ongoing.
"On behalf of our family, I would like to thank the Brantford Police Service, the Ontario Provincial Police, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for everything they have done regarding this investigation," said family representative Glen Gretzky, the middle brother of Wayne and Brent Gretzky. "I would like to sincerely thank every member of the team; the professionalism, dedication and support they have shown has been greatly appreciated."
Police also said they uncovered evidence of the second person, unrelated to the initial investigation, believed to have committed fraud involving a Gretzky hockey stick.
"As the lead agency in this multijurisdictional investigation, the Brantford Police Service is thankful for the assistance provided by our valued partners; the Ontario Provincial Police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as well as the additional assistance from the Halton Regional Police Service," said Brantford police service chief Rob Davis. "As a result of the work of our skilled investigators, over $500,000 USD in Gretzky memorabilia was successfully recovered."

Brantford police launched a three-month investigation that they say quickly discovered several of the missing items were sold to various collectors across Canada. Officers from Brantford, OPP and RCMP executed search warrants at five homes across Ontario and Alberta with assistance from the Halton Regional Police Service.
"The OPP Professional Standards Unit provided assistance to Brantford Police Service and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in this multijurisdictional investigation," OPP commissioner Thomas Carrique said. "The OPP and our partners continue to collaborate and are committed to protecting individuals from victimization, recovering assets, and identifying and holding those accountable who compromise trust within our communities and prey on the vulnerabilities of their victims."

It looked like false hope anyways. As soon as the reports came rolling in of the NHL hoping to start its 2020-21 season on Jan. 13, an empty sense of expectation rushed over me. As we all do, I just want the league back so I can spend most of my nights enjoying their product, but considering that there are still major questions left unanswered and the days ripping away from the calendar, nearing that expected start date, it looks like we’ll be left without the NHL for a little bit longer.
Commissioner Gary Bettman took to a panel called “Holding Domestic and International Competitions in the Modern Conditions of a Pandemic” at the World Hockey Forum in Moscow, to divulge the current plans the league has. While he did mention that he hopes to start the season in mid-January, he also brought to light many other problems that have been unsolved.
In terms of playing within a bubble — as they did during the 2020 postseason — for the season, he is still unsure.
