Padres agree to acquire RP Trevor Rosenthal from the Royals for OF prospect Edward Olivares and a PTBNL.

Nice bounce back season from Rosenthal so far, was terrible the previous two seasons after leaving the Cards.

I think this is a huge pickup for the Padres. Rosenthal has been dominant so far for the Royals and might have been the best closer available on the trade market so kudos to the Padres for making this move they definitely needed to shore up the back end of their bullpen with all the injuries they had.

David Robertson will not appear this season for the Philadelphia Phillies, per Jim Salisbury of NBCSPhilly (via Twitter). The reliever has been shut down from any throwing for the next six weeks. The 35-year-old reliever will now have contributed just seven appearances over the span of the two-year, $23MM deal he signed with the Phillies prior to 2019. Philadelphia has a $2MM buyout option for next season, which one has to think they’d execute after two lost seasons. Otherwise, they’ll be on the hook for $12MM in 2021. Instead, Robertson is likely headed back to the open market to look for a non-guaranteed deal. He could return to the Phillies on that type of deal as Brandon Morrow did after missing the entirety of his contract length due to injury with the Cubs, but it’s not clear now if the Phillies would even be interested in investing more time into Robertson. As we near the trade deadline, let’s check in on a couple of Philly rivals…
        • The Washington Nationals have stumbled through a rough first half to their title defense, but don’t expect the champs to sell, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman. Per Heyman, selling is “not in their DNA.” It certainly hasn’t been an option most seasons for the Nats, who haven’t had a losing season since 2011. In recent seasons, we’ve seen them hold onto Bryce Harper and Anthony Rendon instead of moving them before free agency. They did move Daniel Murphy a couple seasons ago to the Cubs, but even then the Nats didn’t pull the trigger until just before the August deadline. Theoretically, the Nats could look to move veterans like Kurt Suzuki, Adam Eaton, Asdrubal Cabrera, or Eric Thames, but Heyman reports that GM Mike Rizzo is more likely to add than subtract.
        • The Braves have expressed an interest in Joe Musgrove of the Pirates, per Jason MAckey of PGSportsNow. This isn’t likely to turn your hat around as the Braves have expressed interest in a number of potential rotation targets. Musgrove is one of the more likely to move, though he’s just now returning from injury. The former Astro has been a viable rotation arm throughout his career, despite just 3 starts this season. In 2019, he toed the rubber 31 times for a 11-12 record and 4.44 ERA/3.82 FIP. Lance Lynn is probably the top rotation arm available, but Musgrove fits firmly into the next tier in terms of track record and consistency.

Trevor has been great so far.
He's been proving me wrong every step of the way.
Only twice so far has he kind of pissed me off, but so far he's been great.

If you look at his career stats he's been crap when playing for any non-Missouri teams.

Apparently, he is going to be the primary DH. He has some great numbers this year but I kind of liked the ability to shuffle the DH around and give a guy a day off once in awhile.

Kind of lukewarm to both of these trades but I'll give the benefit of the doubt to Aj Preller here. More often than not, his trades have worked out in our favor.

I like the Padres being aggressive in the trade market. I guess Nola is a better hitter than what they had at Catcher so maybe their latest trade upgraded that position. At least they're being active at the trade deadline it shows their fans their going for it this year.

Having already acquired Taijuan Walker, the Blue Jays continue to look for additional upgrades as they pursue a playoff berth. Toronto’s targets include Rangers southpaw Mike Minor, according to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News (Twitter link), as well as Angels outfielder Brian Goodwin, Sportsnet.ca’s Shi Davidi reports.
Minor is perhaps the closest of the two names to becoming a reality, as Grant describes the Jays and Rangers as “actively engaged” in negotiations. Minor would be a pure rental pickup for Toronto since he is a free agent after the season, and he is owed roughly $1.61MM remaining of his prorated $9.5MM salary for the 2020 season. While Minor has a 10-team no-trade clause in the first two seasons of his three-year, $28MM deal with Texas, Grant reports that the clause is no longer in place for this, the final year of Minor’s contract.
Though Minor tossed six shutout innings against the Dodgers in his most recent start, it hasn’t been a great year overall for the 32-year-old. Minor has a 5.60 ERA, 2.69 K/BB rate, and 8.9 K/9 over 35 1/3 innings for the Rangers, with some advanced metrics (4.84 FIP, 4.58 xFIP, 4.49 SIERA, .340 xwOBA against a .314 wOBA) painting only a slightly more positive view of his performance. Still, Minor is only a season removed from a superb year that saw him finish eighth in AL Cy Young Award voting.
Minor has also continued to eat innings, which is no small matter of import for a Blue Jays team that has struggled to get starters deep into games. Walker, Hyun Jin Ryu, Tanner Roark, and Chase Anderson comprise Toronto’s current rotation, with Matt Shoemaker and Nate Pearson both on the injured list. The Jays could continue to rely on bullpen games or an opener/bulk pitcher combo for that fifth rotation spot until Shoemaker and Pearson return, or they could opt for a more proven starter like Minor to solidify matters.
In terms of what the Jays might give up, Davidi writes that Texas has shown interest in Toronto’s “young catchers” — presumably in reference to Danny Jansen or Reese McGuire, as Davidi notes that dealing either backstop would then require the Blue Jays to add another catcher to fill the void. The Jays do have an experienced backup option in Caleb Joseph at their alternate training site, and also prospects Riley Adams and Alejandro Kirk within their 60-man player pool, though it may be unlikely that a more prized prospect like Kirk is moved for a rental player.
Goodwin has backed up his impressive 2019 season with another strong showing this year, as the outfielder entered today’s action with a .253/.343/.484 slash line and four home runs over 105 plate appearances. The 29-year-old Goodwin is controllable through the 2022 season via arbitration, and his ability to play all three outfield positions makes him an even more valuable asset.
Neither Randal Grichuk or Teoscar Hernandez is exactly an ideal defensive fit in center or right field, respectively, so Goodwin could at the very least provide some late-game value as a defensive sub. Goodwin does perhaps seem somewhat overqualified for such a role, though a more regular job could emerge if (as one industry source suggests to Davidi) Lourdes Gurriel Jr. could be used as a deadline trade chip. Gurriel was reportedly floated in trade negotiations over the offseason, and his inclusion in trade talks now could open up a lot of possibilities for the Blue Jays at the deadline.
Gurriel has had some injury problems and faced questions about his defensive position and consistency at the plate over his three MLB seasons, though he has settled in as a regular left fielder and has shown more than a few flashes of brilliance as a hitter. Gurriel has hit .274/.317/.487 with 35 homers over his first 722 Major League plate appearances, and doesn’t turn 27 years old until October. Signed to a seven-year, $22MM deal out of Cuba in 2016, Gurriel is still locked up through the 2023 season at the very affordable price of $13.4MM from 2021-23.

The Padres catchers are hitting somewhere around .150 and that was a hole in the lineup. Nola can also play numerous other positions and we got 2 relievers in the deal as well. At least they are going for it. A lot of these prospects that we traded were blocked by other players to get to the majors and we only traded on top 100 MLB guy.

I have been reading the Padres are trying to get Clevinger as well but the Indians are insistent on adding Grisham, Cronenworth or both and the Padres won't do it. I'd be really pissed if they traded one of those guys, i don't want the offensive dynamic being messed with. It looks like the Braves might be the favorite to get him now. To be honest, I don't trust Clevinger. We have a very strong clubhouse and Clevnger has shown to be very selfish and immature after the incident involving him and Plesac with the Indians.

The Mariners and Padres made their seven-player trade centered around catcher Austin Nola official.
Deal as it stands, per sources and reports: Taylor Trammell, Luis Torrens, Ty France and Andre Muñoz from Padres to Mariners for Austin Nola, Austin Adams and Dan Altavilla.

Wow San Diego landed Mike Clevinger. Talk about pushing all your chips to the middle they're not only going for the NL pennant but I think they have to believe these moves put them in position to win it all.

I just spent the past 30 minutes reviewing all these moves.

Tampa is going for it all too from what I just analyzed.

They have narrowed the gap on the Dodgers. Get used to this team, they are going to be in tact for awhile.

Padres going balls deep in trades right now. Unreal.

Jays added a couple more starting pitchers in Robbie Ray and Ross Stripling for depth.

I got em at +5000 before the season started in the SBR sportsbook. BetOnline has the current odds on San Diego to win the World Series at +1000. Lot of money has to be pouring in on San Diego after all their activity at the trade deadline but I'm not sure I'd take them at 10 to 1 to win the World Series even though I believe they very well could be that team that comes out of nowhere to win it all in 2020.
