#2773The Dodgers announced that righty Walker Buehler has been placed on the 10-day injured list due to a blister on his right hand. The move is retroactive to Aug. 23. Right-hander Mitch White is being promoted to the big leagues in his place. White is already on the 40-man roster. Buehler had been slated to pitch tonight.
It’s likely to be a short-term stint on the IL for Buehler, and one that the first-place Dodgers can weather. Los Angeles currently leads the second-place Padres by four games and, at 22-9, holds the best record in Major League Baseball. Buehler has gotten out to a fairly pedestrian start to the season, working to a 4.32 ERA in 25 frames, though his overall body of work since cementing himself in the L.A. rotation is excellent. Dating back to 2018, Buehler has a 3.20 ERA with 10.3 K/9, 2.2 BB/9 and a 45.2 percent ground-ball rate.
The 25-year-old White was the Dodgers’ second-round pick in 2016 out of Santa Clara University and has been one of their more promising arms since. He ranked among the game’s 100 best farmhands prior to the 2018 season, and while he’s not as highly regarded in 2020 after some rough showings in 2018-19, he’s still generally considered to be among the club’s 30 most promising minor leaguers. White was dominant in seven Double-A starts in 2019 before (like most pitchers) getting rocked in 16 Triple-A appearances (6.50 ERA, 9.6 K/, 3.3 BB/9, 1.84 HR/9).
The Dodgers didn’t announce White as their starter, though it’s possible he could take the hill in place of Buehler. If not, he’ll be in line to make his Major League debut whenever he gets into a game for the first time.Comment -

#2784While the Cardinals are still going to explore trade deadline opportunities, president of baseball operations John Mozeliak told The Athletic’s Mark Saxon and other reporters that his club faces something of a unique roster crunch due to the coronavirus outbreak that ravaged the Cards earlier this month. “I think that’s the biggest issue at hand for us, sort of navigating the health of the club vs. what potentially we could do in a trade,” Mozeliak said. “Candidly, the timing of it [the deadline] is not ideal for us, as we start to unwind people coming off of COVID back onto the roster….What it is to say is we haven’t been a team together, with the exception of the first five days together.”
With a whopping seven players still to be activated from the COVID-19 injured list, 40-man roster considerations will start to become a mounting concern for the Cardinals in the coming days, and certainly not everyone will be back before Monday’s trade deadline. One potential wrinkle, Mozeliak said, is that “other teams might be dealing with roster crunches, too, as they navigate Aug. 31,” and thus these rivals might not be as eager to make claims on any players the Cards might be forced to expose to waivers.
More from around the National League…
- Manny Pina left tonight’s game with a right knee injury, the Brewers announced. Pina suffered the injury while getting back to first base on a pickoff attempt during the second inning, and was replaced by Omar Narvaez. The initial outlook isn’t good, as manager Craig Counsell told Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and other reporters that Pina is on crutches and is having trouble putting weight on his right leg. Pina is in his fifth year in Milwaukee and has been hitting respectably well, bringing a .231/.318/.410 slash line (roughly his career average) over 44 plate appearances coming into today’s doubleheader with the Reds. Pina’s steady production has been helpful given Narvaez’s struggles this season, so Milwaukee would be particularly hampered behind the plate if Pina has to go on the injured list. Jacob Nottingham and David Freitas are the only catchers with MLB experience at the Brewers’ alternate training site.
- Kevin Gausman allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over 4 2/3 innings in the Giants’ 2-0 loss to the Dodgers today, and with the trade deadline looming on Monday, Gausman might well have thrown his last pitch in the black and orange…at least in 2020. Gausman told Kerry Crowley of the Bay Area News Group and other reporters that he would be open to re-signing with the Giants in free agency this winter, even if the club moves him prior to the deadline. His preference, of course, is to not be dealt at all, though the right-hander’s overall quality work this season and rental player status makes him one of the trade deadline’s top candidates to be sent elsewhere.
- Madison Bumgarner will throw a simulated game Saturday in the next step of his rehab plan, though Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo told reporters (including the Arizona Republic’s Mark Faller) that the southpaw is still over a week away from returning to action. Assuming all goes well in the sim game, Lovullo said Bumgarner would still need another 7-10 days to ramp up for activation from the 10-day injured list. Bumgarner has been out of action since August 10 due to a back strain.

#2787New York Yankees place Aaron Judge back on IL, promote top prospect Estevan Florial
The New York Yankees placed right fielder Aaron Judge on the 10-day injured list with a strained left calf, just days after the star slugger returned.
Judge was activated Wednesday but aggravated the injury in a game at Atlanta and was removed in the sixth inning. He was added back to the IL on Friday before the opener of a doubleheader against the Mets.
"It's just a recurrence of the [calf] strain that he had suffered before," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. "Similar in that it's low grade and pretty minor, but enough that he had to go back on the IL. Hopefully, it's not something that keeps him down too long but definitely something that we've got to continue to work to get right."
The Yankees promoted top outfield prospect Estevan Florial to be the 29th man, batting the 22-year-old seventh and starting him in center field.Comment -

#27909:15pm: The Athletics have acquired infielder Tommy La Stella from the division-rival Angels, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Fellow infielder Franklin Barreto is headed to the Angels, per Rosenthal.
Now 31 years old, La Stella was a capable part-time player with the Braves and Cubs from 2014-18, but he has found another gear since joining the Angels before last season. Going back to 2019, La Stella has slashed .289/.353/.483 (125 wRC+) with 20 home runs and as many walks as strikeouts (35). La Stella even earned his first All-Star nod a season ago, though he was unable to play in the game after suffering a fractured tibia.
To his credit, La Stella has come back strong from his injury this year. He could soon emerge as the No. 1 option at second base for a contending Oakland club that has relied on Tony Kemp to handle the position so far.
Although La Stella was terrific as an Angel, they’re well out of contention, and he’s a pending free agent. As such, it made sense for the club to move on from La Stella and take on the 24-year-old Barreto, a former top prospect who didn’t receive consistent playing in Oakland.
Originally acquired from the Blue Jays as part of the two teams’ Josh Donaldson trade before 2015, Barreto batted a woeful .180/.210/.360 with nine homers in 219 plate appearances as an Athletic, and he has totaled just 10 trips to the plate this year. However, in addition to his prospect pedigree and youth, Barreto owns a strong track record in Triple-A, where he has hit .285/.356/.505 with 53 HRs in 1,285 PA. The Angels are obviously hoping Barreto will tap into his potential in their uniform, but because he’s out of minor league options, they won’t have the luxury of demoting him without possibly losing him.
Defensively, most of Barreto’s MLB playing time has come at second, where La Stella and Luis Rengifo have gotten the lion’s share of action for the club this year. But as the Angels go through the final month of what’s very likely to be another non-playoff season, they should be in position to evaluate Barreto as a possible everyday option at the keystone. The A’s, on the other hand, are taking a chance that La Stella will provide yet another weapon on a team aiming for an AL West title and a World Series this year.Comment -

#2797Manny Ramirez, 48, signing to play for Australia's Sydney Blue Sox
Manny Ramirez, the 48-year-old perennial All-Star who last played in the majors in 2011, is signing a one-year deal to play for the Sydney Blue Sox in the Australian Baseball League, team owner Adam Dobb told theabl.com.au.
"As a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, this is a dream come true," Dobb told theabl.com.au. "Manny has been interested in the Australian Baseball League for quite a while now."
Dobb said it was Ramirez's preference to play in a big city, and he added that the team is thrilled to have reached a deal with a player who hit 555 home runs and 1,831 RBIs, with a .312 career batting average.
Ramirez, who spent the majority of his career with the Cleveland Indians and Red Sox, last played professionally in Japan in 2017.
Ramirez retired abruptly in April 2011 when told he was being suspended 100 games by Major League Baseball for testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug during spring training. He was suspended 50 games for his first violation of the policy in 2009.Comment -
