    Norris Trophy finalists announced

Carlson, Hedman, Josi up for award given to best defenseman in NHL

John Carlson, Victor Hedman and Roman Josi were named finalists for the Norris Trophy on Monday.

The award, voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association, is given annually to the best defenseman in the NHL. The winner will be announced during the conference finals.
Carlson led defensemen in assists (60) and points (75), each an NHL career high, and tied his high with 15 goals in 69 games for the Washington Capitals before the season was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus. He averaged 1.09 points per game to become the first NHL defenseman since Ray Bourque (1.26), Sergei Zubov (1.14) and Al MacInnins (1.09) in 1993-94 to average more than one point per game for a season. Carlson averaged 24:38 of ice time per game, was first among defensemen in game-winning goals with six and second in power-play points with 26, and had 108 blocked shots and a plus-12 rating.
Carlson helped the Capitals to the third-best record in the Eastern Conference (41-20-8, .652 points percentage) and a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 12th time in 13 seasons. Washington will play in the round-robin portion of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers against the Boston Bruins (.714), Tampa Bay Lightning (.657) and Philadelphia Flyers (.645) to determine the top four seeds in the Eastern Conference for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Carlson would be the second Capitals player to win the Norris Trophy and first since Rod Langway, who won it in back-to-back seasons (1982-83, 1983-84).
Hedman finished third among defensemen behind Carlson and Josi with 55 points (11 goals, 44 assists) in 66 games for the Lightning. He was plus-27 (fourth among defensemen) and had 98 blocked shots and 47 takeaways. He averaged 24:04 of ice time per game.
A Norris finalist for the third straight season, Hedman won the award in 2017-18 and finished third last season. Tampa Bay finished 43-21-6 and clinched a playoff berth for the sixth time in seven seasons.
Josi set NHL career highs in goals (16), assists (49) and points (65) for the Nashville Predators, ranking second among defensemen in each category. He was third in the League in average ice time per game (25:47) and had 23 power-play points, 108 blocked shots and a plus-22 rating in 69 games. A first-time Norris finalist, Josi would be the first Predators player to win the award.
Nashville (35-26-8, .565) will enter the Qualifiers as the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference and will play the No. 11 seed, the Arizona Coyotes (33-29-8, .529), in one of eight best-of-5 series, with the winner advancing to the playoffs and the loser having a chance at the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery on Aug. 10.
Calgary Flames defenseman Mark Giordano won the Norris Trophy last season.
The 2020 NHL Awards were scheduled for June 18 in Las Vegas but were postponed March 25.

New York Rangers forward Brendan Lemieux has been suspended by the NHL for the first two games of the team's preliminary-round series against Carolina because of an illegal check that injured Colorado forward Joonas Donskoi in March.

Edmonton vs Calgary would make for a heck of a Conference Final. Already brewed some renewed bad blood this year.

The Philadelphia Flyers signed Oskar Lindblom to a $9 million, three-year contract extension Wednesday only weeks after the promising forward completed radiation treatments for a rare form of bone cancer.

Seabrook won't play for Blackhawks in postseason

Defenseman had three surgeries this season, not traveling to Edmonton for Qualifiers

CHICAGO -- Brent Seabrook said he will not join the Chicago Blackhawks when they leave for Edmonton on Sunday to play in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers.

"I just don't feel comfortable yet, as comfortable as I want to feel on the ice," the defenseman said Friday. "My understanding of the way whole thing works is there are 31 players and they all need to be playing. The longer we go in the playoffs, you never know what's going to happen with bodies. We could lose 10 guys in the first game, then Brent Seabrook's taking up a spot and can't play."
Teams are allowed to have up to 31 skaters, including goalies, travel with them to the two hub cities, Edmonton for the Western Conference and Toronto for the Eastern Conference, and those will be the only players allowed to participate in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Coach Jeremy Colliton said the Blackhawks are finalizing their roster, due at 5 p.m. Friday, and would not say who else isn't going to Edmonton. The 12th-seeded Blackhawks (32-30-8, .514 points percentage) play the fifth-seeded Edmonton Oilers (37-25-9, .585) in a Western Conference best-of-5 qualifier series beginning Aug. 1. The winner advances to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The loser will have a chance at the No. 1 pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in the Second Phase of the NHL Draft Lottery, to be held Aug. 10.
Chicago has an exhibition game against the St. Louis Blues on Wednesday (6:30 p.m. ET; NBCSN, NHLN, NBCSCH+, FS-MW+, NHL.TV).
Seabrook had surgery three times during the regular season; on his right shoulder Dec. 27, on his left hip in January and on his right hip on Feb. 6. After the third surgery, Blackhawks team physician Dr. Michael Terry said the 35-year-old would need 5-6 months to recover. He began skating with the Blackhawks for Phase 2 voluntary workouts at their practice facility July 9 and participated in every practice during training camp, which began July 13.
"Obviously, we all are aware of the surgeries he's had and recovery time, but he thought, and it was driven by Brent, he wanted to see where he was at, he would come to camp and make an attempt to play," Colliton said. "After almost two weeks here, it was his feeling he wasn't at the level he wanted to be at. It's been great to have him here, and hopefully that'll help him as he goes into his offseason and tries to get to a level where he can be one of our top-six defensemen every night, because that's what he wants to do. This two-week process will help him going forward."
Seabrook, who won the Stanley Cup with the Blackhawks in 2010, 2013 and 2015, hasn't played since Dec. 15, when he played 18:38 of ice time in a 5-3 win against the Minnesota Wild at United Center. He had four points (three goals, one assist) in 32 games this season and has 464 points (103 goals, 361 assists) in 1,114 games, all with the Blackhawks. His eight-year contract extension (annual average value of $6.875 million), which he agreed to on Sept. 26, 2015, runs through the 2023-24 season.
"I wouldn't have been here if I didn't think I could play," Seabrook said. "I'm going to skate again tomorrow and be with the team. I think looking back now, it was good for me to see where I'm at, see what I still have to work on and the things I have to get better at and stronger with and continue to heal to be ready for camp next year."
Goalie Corey Crawford (unfit to play) did not practice Friday; he has not participated in training camp, nor did he take part in the voluntary workouts, which began June 8. Defenseman Connor Murphy (groin) skated separate from the main group Friday.

Carolina Hurricanes All-Star defenseman Dougie Hamilton didn't practice Thursday and his status is unclear as the team prepares for the return to play next week.
The team's website reported Wednesday that Hamilton left that day's practice early ''in some visible discomfort.'' Asked about Hamilton not practicing Thursday, coach Rod Brind'Amour said only that Hamilton is ''unfit to play at this moment'' and offered no specifics as the league has prohibited teams from disclosing whether a player is injured or ill.

Sara Civian of The Athletic isreporting Dougie Hamilton has not re-aggravated the broken leg that held him out for much of the 2019-20 season, but he could still be weeks away from a return. He was deemed “unfit to play” for Carolina’s practice on Thursday after leaving Wednesday’s skate prematurely with an injury.

Arizona general manager John Chayka has stepped down, one week before the Coyotes open the Stanley Cup qualifiers against Nashville.
The Coyotes announced Sunday former player and current assistant GM Steve Sullivan will serve as interim general manager.
"The club is disappointed in his actions and his timing as the Coyotes prepare to enter the NHL's hub city of Edmonton, where the team will begin postseason play for the first time since 2012," the team said in a statement.

"Chayka has chosen to quit on a strong and competitive team, a dedicated staff, and the Arizona Coyotes fans, the greatest fans in the NHL."
Chayka made a name for himself as one of the NHL's top general managers since being promoted in 2016 and recently signed a contract extension through 2024 late last year.

Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins players lined up shoulder to shoulder during the U.S. and Canadian anthems before the first exhibition game of the NHL's restarted season, while members of the Boston Bruins plan to lock arms for the songs to promote racial equality.

Hamilton out for Hurricanes in Game 1 of Cup Qualifiers against Rangers

Defenseman left practice last week; Carolina won't reveal starting goalie

Dougie Hamilton will not play for the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Qualifiers against the New York Rangers at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto on Saturday (Noon ET; NBCSN, NHL.TV, SN, TVAS, FS-CR, MSG).

The defenseman has not practiced since July 22, when he left the ice in discomfort during power-play drills. He skated on his own after practice Friday in Toronto, the Eastern Conference hub city.
"Dougie is getting better for sure, but he's unfit [to play] so he won't be in there tomorrow," Carolina coach Rod Brind'Amour said Friday.
Brind'Amour said he's hopeful Hamilton will play at some point during the best-of-5 series.
"We would hope so, but we're certainly not going to rush him back," he said. "But if he's close to being able to play he's going to get in there. We know the importance of having him in the lineup. That's a huge, huge loss for us, so we want to get him back in there ASAP."
The Hurricanes are the No. 6 seed against the No. 11 Rangers.
Hamilton hasn't played since having surgery Jan. 17 to repair a fractured left fibula. He scored 40 points (14 goals, 26 assists) in 47 games this season.
Forward Martin Necas practiced Friday and is questionable for Game 1. It was his first time on the ice since leaving practice July 25.
"Marty looked really good today, felt good, so we'll see how that goes tomorrow," Brind'Amour said. "Make sure he feels the same way, obviously, and then we hope to see him in the lineup."
Brind'Amour would not reveal whether goalie Petr Mrazek or James Reimer would start Game 1. Mrazek started and played 32:25 in a 3-2 loss to the Washington Capitals in an exhibition game in Toronto on Wednesday. He allowed three goals on 16 shots. Reimer relieved Mrazek and made nine saves without allowing a goal.
"We're going to tell them tonight," Brind'Amour said. "I definitely have a plan but I don't want to say it now when I haven't told them. I envision that both guys will probably get action here with the amount of games and how short time frame there is between games. I think we'll probably get both guys in there. I'm glad both guys look really good and feel good about their game, so we're good either way."

Its just that basketball and baseball are my two favorite sports mostly because thats what I grew up playing. Hockey is intense though and betting it makes it even more exciting.
