Berlin (AFP) - German football authorities are set to announce plans on Thursday for Bundesliga matches to restart on May 9 in empty stadiums, but the potential return in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic is meeting some opposition.
Chancellor Angela Merkel's government is slowly easing nationwide restrictions and the resumption of the Bundesliga, which was halted on March 13, would boost morale in football-mad Germany.

Sources: NHL no longer considering neutral sites for season restart

        • Greg WyshynskiESPN

The NHL has turned its attention away from neutral sites and is focusing on restarting the 2019-20 season at league arenas, sources tell ESPN.
Venues like the University of North Dakota were rumored to be under consideration for "neutral site" games, in less-populated locations that weren't as impacted by the coronavirus pandemic as some NHL cities. Gov. Chris Sununu said he had discussions with the NHL about hosting games at Southern New Hampshire University and that the option was "on the table."
But multiple NHL sources say the "neutral site" idea never got off the drawing board, due to problems with player accommodations, facilities for league and team staff, and the inability to bring multiple broadcasting crews to cover potential Stanley Cup playoff games. NHL Players' Association executive director Don Fehr said there had been no discussions about specific neutral sites with the NHL, either.
Instead, the league is looking at regional NHL arenas, aligned by division, where teams could potentially finish their seasons. Sources told ESPN that the current favorites are the home rinks for the Carolina Hurricanes (Metropolitan Division), Edmonton Oilers (Pacific Division) and Minnesota Wild (Central Division). A front-runner from the Atlantic Division has yet to emerge.

As far as when a league restart could happen, Florida Panthers president and CEO Matthew Caldwell said on Tuesday that the NHL has discussed resuming its season in the summer. The NHL's goal remains to finish the regular season, which had 189 games remaining when it was paused due to the COVID-19 outbreak on March 12. One concept would be to play multiple games throughout the day at these sites, like one would see at international tournaments.

"The players right now are all quarantined. I know for the NHL, our players are quarantined through the end of April, and that will probably be extended into May. But when we are able to come out of the quarantine period, players are going to need time to work out. I think all leagues are thinking about some training camp that we would do before the start of the season," Caldwell said on a Re-Open Florida Task Force conference call, as first reported by "The Andy Slater Show."
"So that's going to take us into the June time frame. At least with the NHL, we're trying to target some time in July. When we feel that players are safe, and we have enough testing and we have enough ways to get back on the ice, for us it's probably going to be contained at playing at four or five neutral sites. So that's all being discussed right now. My guess is that we would start with limited fans or empty arenas. So just with the teams and the associated staffs," Caldwell said.
An NHL source said this plan was one of many discussed, but pushed back on the notion that July was the target date, saying that the league would open earlier if it could. The source said speculation that fans could return to arenas in a limited capacity for a season restart was premature.
The NHL has its players self-quarantined until April 30. Any format for a season restart would have to be approved by the NHLPA. Both the league and the players' association have said that restrictions on travel, mass gatherings and nonessential businesses would need to be eased before the season could be restarted; beyond that, there would also have to be measures taken to ensure the health and safety of the players.
"We'll follow the directions of the appropriate public health authorities. That goes without saying," Fehr told ESPN on Saturday. "When and if they say -- and, obviously, we hope it's sooner rather than later -- that they can declare it safe under certain conditions, we'll adhere to those guidelines. The NHL has retained specific infectious disease specialists, as have we, everyone is working together. You will do everything you can to make sure it's as safe as it can be. If there's enough unreasonable risk, it's hard to see coming back."
Additional reporting by ESPN's Emily Kaplan.

New Jersey Devils interim coach Alain Nasreddine is focusing on a having his team ready to play should the NHL resume games after a pause caused by coronavirus pandemic rather than whether he will have a job next season.
Speaking in conference call Wednesday, Nasreddine said he is aware of reports that Devils interim general manager Tom Fitzgerald has interviewed candidates for the team's head coaching job.
The Devils have not commented on the report.

NHL team planning May 15 workouts ahead of possible restart

            By Larry Brooks

            April 23, 2020 | 4:46pm | Updated

Even as NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said, “we’re not going to rush anything,” in his interview with Sportsnet on Wednesday, the NHL may be on an accelerated timeline to resume the season.
The Post has learned that at least one NHL team has told its players to be prepared to report on May 15 to begin informal workouts that would precede a training camp of up to three weeks. Not all teams have acted in a similar manner.
“I don’t know what Clubs are telling their Players,” deputy commissioner Bill Daly told The Post via email. “We have not specified or articulated any ‘target dates’ to our Clubs at this point.”
Players — or teams — would presumably be isolated beginning with the report date. That might mean sequestration for a duration of up to four months if the NHL completes the 189 outstanding games remaining in the regular season ahead of holding a traditional Stanley Cup playoffs.
Bettman on Wednesday said the league will centralize its games in up to four locations. Further complicating matters is the fact many teams are unlikely to receive clearance from their local governing bodies and health agencies to conduct workouts and/or camps at home.
That means those teams would have to relocate to their assigned central location for camp and the duration of the season/playoffs.
Though nothing is etched in stone, Columbus, Ohio, is the favorite to host Metropolitan Division teams. That, of course, includes the Rangers, Islanders and Devils. It is not known what social distancing and “re-opening” guidelines would apply in Ohio in mid-May.
Sources indicate that as of Thursday, there had yet to be an in-depth conversation between the NHL and NHLPA regarding protocols that would be in place to protect the players against being infected with the coronavirus. The same protections, of course, would have to apply to their entirety of team traveling parties that would range from 50-60 individuals.

Testing — and retesting — would seem mandatory but it is unknown whether and just how the NHL would be in position to administer that high a volume of tests beginning in just over three weeks.
It is also unknown whether players returning from Europe — and specifically from Sweden, where the country has taken a more laissez-faire approach to combating the virus — would need to be quarantined for two weeks upon their arrival in North America.
If that were the case, those players would have to depart their homeland on or around May 1 — one week from Friday. The NHL has a self-isolation guideline in place through April 30 that had been expected to be extended.
But that, as much else, is unclear.

TORONTO (AP) -- Vancouver Canucks goalie Jacob Markstrom is using a tennis ball machine as part of his training to stay sharp.
Columbus Blue Jackets counterpart Joonas Korpisalo doesn't have that technology at his disposal during the coronavirus pandemic, so a wall has had to do the trick.
Toronto's Frederik Andersen is self-isolating with teammate and 47-goal man Auston Matthews.
''I have a pretty good shooter here,'' Andersen said.
No matter the setup, NHL puck-stoppers are, at least on the surface, at a disadvantage when it comes to maintaining most of their physical skills during the lull since the season was suspended March 12.

Muzzin healthy, ready to play for Maple Leafs if NHL season resumes

Defenseman expected to be out four weeks was nearing return prior to pause

Jake Muzzin said he has fully recovered from a broken right hand and is ready to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs if the NHL season resumes.

"The hand is feeling great, the body is feeling good. I'd say pretty much 100 percent ready to go," Muzzin said Tuesday. "Been getting treatment and staying ready like everyone else."
The defenseman was injured blocking a shot by Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman in the second period of a 4-3 win Feb. 25. He said he was closing in on a return when the NHL paused the season March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.
"A couple of weeks on the ice before wouldn't hurt to get back and get some touches and feels," Muzzin said. "Should be ready to go when called upon."
Muzzin rehabbed the hand at Maple Leafs facilities for a short time after the season was paused.
"It's obviously a different feel," he said. "Coming in and there's only two people, three people, really. You have the whole arena to yourself. It's kind of an eerie feeling. I was actually lucky and fortunate to get treatment and get the work done that needed to be done to make sure I heal properly."

Muzzin has been in self-quarantine in Toronto with his wife, Courtney, and his daughter, Luna, who turned 1 on April 18. Though he admits there is uncertainty when it comes to the season, he's relieved his future with Toronto has been taken care of.
Muzzin, who could have become an unrestricted free agent after this season, signed a four-year contract with the Maple Leafs on Feb. 24. He said having job security is precious given the unknowns pending free agents face.
"It's the uncertainty [for them]," Muzzin said. "I think that would be at the back of your mind. [Thoughts like] 'Guys are going to get what they should get. Or it's going to be fine. Or something is going to drastically change. Or maybe you have to structure a deal differently.' I don't know.
"For me, I don't have that because I was fortunate to get a deal structured before. Maybe everything's going to be fine. I don't know. Maybe that's the part of the uncertainty of what's going to come in the future."
Muzzin, who was traded to the Maple Leafs by the Los Angeles Kings for forward Carl Grundstrom, defenseman prospect Sean Durzi and a first-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft on Jan. 28, 2019, grew up 88 miles southwest of Toronto in Woodstock, Ontario, and was familiar with the passion of Maple Leafs fans.
He said it took a couple of months to feel comfortable but is now happy to be signed for four more seasons.
"The direction the team is going, the personnel, the people, the organization and the buzz in the city, there's way more positives than negatives, so we wanted to be here," Muzzin said. "And we felt the team wanted me to be here. We're glad and we're really fortunate we got a deal done before all of this happened."
Muzzin has 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) in 53 games this season for the Maple Leafs (36-25-9), who are third in the Atlantic Division.
He described the season as a roller coaster, said players were becoming comfortable with coach Sheldon Keefe, who replaced Mike Babcock on Nov. 20, and are confident about their chances should the season resume.
"There's room for improvement. We're looking at our games now and trying to get better," Muzzin said. "Just reflecting on certain areas of the game right now. Like I said about the contract, just excited about the group, the personnel, the people, and I think we have a bright future. Just excited to get back and go on a run here."

The Detroit Red Wings have signed left wing Mathias Brome to a one-year contract, the team announced Wednesday, adding one of the leading scorers from the Swedish Hockey League last season.
The 25-year-old Brome had a career-high 43 points last season. He led Orebro HK with 17 goals and 26 assists. Brome averaged 33 points over three seasons in the SHL.

Seattle, Islanders arena work on schedule for 2021-22 NHL season: report

Projects have been affected by local regulations related to coronavirus pandemic

The new arenas for NHL Seattle and the New York Islanders remain on schedule for opening for the 2021-22 NHL season, ESPN reported Wednesday.

The Seattle project was delayed for two days in March due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus but was allowed to continue because it was considered essential construction, Katie Townsend, vice president of corporate communications for NHL Seattle, told ESPN. Work on New Arena at Seattle Center, a $930 million project, began Jan. 21.
"We haven't lost any time, and at the moment there's no change to our schedule," Townsend said. "I think it's something where we have to have contingency plans, and be working on them, but we don't foresee it being a change in our schedule."
Seattle became the NHL's 32nd team on Dec. 4, 2018 and is scheduled to begin play in 2021-22.
Work on the arena for the Islanders at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, has been paused since March 27, part of a shutdown of non-essential projects. Gov. Andrew Cuomo said this week that restarting construction projects, with strict health guidelines, is part of the plan to reopen the New York economy, ESPN said.
"The governor has given some indication that selective construction will start up again in some time frame. So we're ready to go again," Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky said. "… Obviously, the most important thing is that you adhere to social distancing and you make sure the people on site are taking care of themselves. It's an open-air site, still, so we're hopeful that we'll be able to start the construction again when it's appropriate."
The Islanders, who have split home games between Nassau Coliseum and Barclays Center since the start of last season, broke ground on Sept. 23, 2019. Cuomo announced Feb. 29 that the Islanders would play all home games next season at the Coliseum.
The NHL season has been paused since March 12 with no timetable for it to resume.

Get used to the concept of pods and pucks if the NHL is going to have any chance of completing its season, with the most likely scenarios calling for games in empty, air-conditioned arenas during the dog days of summer.
What is emerging as the leading plan involves bringing teams back in a few empty NHL buildings to complete some, if not all, of the remaining regular-season games before opening the playoffs and awarding the Stanley Cup for the 125th time in the past 127 years.
The most aggressive timetable would have players returning to their home rinks as early as May 15, followed by a training camp and possible exhibition games in June, a person familiar with discussions told The Associated Press.

I agree, that's best case scenario.

I think it's really down to two options. Straight to playoffs or we get nothing at all.

Coronavirus testing key issue for possible restart of NHL season

Protocol yet to be determined, Deputy Commissioner Daly says

                                      by Nicholas J. Cotsonika @cotsonika / NHL.com Columnist May 1, 2020

Frequent testing would be an important part of any scenario the NHL and the NHL Players' Association consider for resuming the season, which was paused March 12 due to concerns surrounding the coronavirus.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly discussed that issue and others in two radio interviews Friday.
"We're going to need to have access to testing, and we're going to make it a point that we're not accessing testing, even in a private way, if testing availability is an issue in the community," Daly told 630 CHED in Edmonton. "We will not test asymptomatic players ahead of symptomatic people who are unable to get tested. It's just something we will not do."
Daly told TSN 1050 in Toronto the actual testing protocol has yet to be determined.
"There are number of potential solutions that are [pitched] to us and to the other sports leagues and to other organizations every day, and I'd say it's an important part of the process in terms of making sure you thoroughly vet that and understand the testing solution you're embracing," Daly said.
Daly told TSN 1050 that a number of NHL cities and venues had approached the League about hosting games if the NHL decides to play in centralized locations, and confirmed to CHED that Edmonton is "definitely in the mix."
Daly told TSN 1050 a community would need the capacity for a testing program along with a first-class arena, practice ice, hotel capacity and the ability to secure access.
"Not every community probably will be in the place where they can allow for discretionary testing of players," Daly said.
"… Another box on the checklist that you have to check is, is it supported by kind of the local health authorities? Is this something that the community welcomes and thinks would be a positive in recovering from what we're going through now?
"… We're really just in the process of kind of vetting all those clubs, communities and all the venue issues that would be associated with that."
The NHL and the NHLPA have formed a Return to Play Committee of executives and players. Daly told CHED the NHL has made clear to the players that it understands the issue of being separated from family if teams play in centralized locations.
"We don't expect them to be isolated and away from their families for a four-month period of time or a three-month period of time or even a two-month period of time," he said. "We understand the importance of kind of family interaction, and we'll find a way to accommodate that."
Daly told TSN 1050 that if the NHL were to play games without fans, it would open up possibilities to increase the use of technology via television and digital media.
"Obviously we're looking to exploit that opportunity, and we're going to try to maximize the fan experience," the Deputy Commissioner said. "If you can't be in-building, which is a second-to-none fan experience, I think, for live sports generally but in particular for our sport, I think you have to be creative in ways to utilize technology to, as I said, maximize the fan experience and bring them closer to the game, closer to the personalities than ever before."
The NHL has floated the idea to the general managers of holding the 2020 NHL Draft in June before the end of the regular season. Daly told CHED the League thinks there are benefits. Teams are prepared. The NHL doesn't want to shoehorn the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery and the draft into a tight window of time. Holding the draft in June would be an opportunity for fan engagement.
But there are complications, such as conditional draft picks determined by the regular season and the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Nothing's going to be perfect," Daly said. "We haven't made a decision on that yet, but obviously we'll have to make the decision in the near future."
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman told NHL Network on Thursday the League would consider starting next season in November or December.
Asked how that would affect the schedule, Daly told TSN 1050, "That depends on a whole host of things, including building availabilities through the following summer, when we would want to complete our season the following summer, whether we'd have to condense the normal schedule in any meaningful way.
"But … in that type of scenario, my guess is we would be looking at ways to make … the day count as low as possible. You have to look to where in the schedule you might be able to create those type of opportunities, and we'll do that at the appropriate time. But [the NHL All-Star Game] and five-day break and all those things would be kind of normal considerations that would have to be evaluated if we go down that path."
The League and the players' association reengaged in discussions regarding the NHL/NHLPA Collective Bargaining Agreement shortly before the season was paused, with the agreement expiring after the 2021-22 season. They have become focused on the coronavirus situation but could engage again.
"This situation certainly provides an opportunity to kind of ignite and expedite those talks, I would think, in certain ways," Daly told TSN 1050. "While we're not there substantively yet because we have a lot of other things we're working on, I think there's a willingness and an interest on both sides to pursue that."

A couple of weeks ago, former Montreal Canadiens tough guy Georges Laraque was running five or six days a week as he trained for a marathon.
Now, the former NHL enforcer's biggest challenge is trying to breathe clearly as he fights COVID-19 from a hospital in Montreal.
''Now I can't even get up without losing my breath. It's insane,'' he said.
In a series of videos from his hospital bed, the 43-year-old said he began feeling symptoms a week ago Sunday when he was helping to deliver groceries to vulnerable people in his community.

Justin Trudeau: NHL players entering Canada subject to quarantine

                                              • Associated Press

The NHL could face another hurdle if the league decides to continue the 2019-20 season in the near future -- getting non-Canadian resident players across the border to join their teams.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Sunday that players would -- at a minimum -- need to follow quarantine protocols if they were to arrive in Canada while the border remains closed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"I think it's a question we'll have to look into," Trudeau said. "Certainly at a strict minimum, anyone who arrives from another country will have to follow all the rules of quarantine in an extremely strict manner, but we're not there yet in our discussions with the NHL.
"We recognize that it's a possibility, but it depends on an enormous amount of things, and I don't want to speculate on this until there's more discussion," he added

                                              .

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- The Anaheim Ducks have re-signed defensemen Christian Djoos and Jani Hakanpaa to one-year contracts.
The Ducks announced the deals Wednesday. Djoos will make $1 million next season, and Hakanpaa gets $750,000.

NHL releases statement on Brendan Leipsic's 'misogynistic and reprehensible' comments in leaked Instagram DMs

The comments were leaked through screenshots

Screenshots of a group chat involving Washington Capitals forward Brendan Leipsic were leaked Wednesday that showed the 25-year-old insulting current teammates, the wife of another player and pregnant women. Leipsic has since deleted his Instagram account, where the conversations took place, presumably in the wake of these revelations.
After the photos circulated around social media, the NHL referred to the comments "misogynistic and reprehensible remarks" in a statement but out by the league.
Some of the players whose partners Leipsic insults include Auston Matthews of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Tanner Pearson of the Vancouver Canucks.

There are mixed feelings among executives about the idea, ranging from frustration to begrudging acceptance.
