#13683:30pm: Rodriguez suffered a subluxation — which is a partial dislocation of the kneecap that he is uniquely prone to — according to president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski (via Drellich; Twitter links). The expectation is that Brian Johnson will take the open rotation slot.
2:34pm: The Red Sox will place lefty Eduardo Rodriguez on the 10-day DL, according to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald. Rodriguez experienced right knee discomfort today after slipping while getting ready for yesterday’s outing. Reliever Brandon Workman will take the open roster spot, per Evan Drellich of CSNNE.com (via Twitter).
Rodriguez was ultimately shelled yesterday, a rare dud of a start in what has been an excellent overall performance thus far in 2017. The 24-year-old southpaw owns a 3.54 ERA with 9.6 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 through 61 innings on the year.
News of a knee injury is of greater concern in his case, though, given his history of such ailments. Rodriguez missed action with knee troubles in 2016 and tweaked the joint over the winter.
While it’s far from clear at this point how long Rodriguez will be out, the absence means the Boston rotation will again be without a key member for at least some time. David Price has only just returned to the majors, which momentarily gave the organization the kind of five-man group it had anticipated over the winter. Righty Steven Wright is expected to miss the entire rest of the season after undergoing surgery on his knee, so another fill-in option will ultimately be called upon to take Rodriguez’s next scheduled start.Comment -

#1371Ben Lively makes his major league debut.
Ben Lively makes his major league debut.
Most of these numbers he put up in AA and AAA ball are rock solid.
Just off the numbers (I'm going to the scouting reports now for more information) there's a lot to like.
That International League (AAA) is not a picnic, tons of potential talent there.
The WH/IP stands out, so does the ERA, K rate while not eye popping is nice, The HR's allowed are way down.
I think I.m going to watch his first start.
Now the bad news, he faces Johnny Cueto, but you know what? I don't think he minds.
Good luck kid, I usually root for these first timers, make your HS coach and mom and dad proud.

#1372Yeah the scouts aren't as high on lively as you would think based on his numbers
but so much of that shit is just how you were perceived when you were drafted and you early milb career
all the scouts tend to copy each other's rankings and won't move a player Toooooo far from his initial projection
i know some rankings didn't even have him in their top 20 philly prospects after his super numbers last year
lets hope he proves them wrongComment -

#1377Jason Grilli became the first reliever in Blue Jays history to give up four home runs in one inning. Brett Gardner, Matt Holliday, Starlin Castro and Didi Gregorius all hit solo home runs against Grilli in the 8th inning to give the Yankees a 7-0 lead.
It's the third time in franchise history that the Yankees have hit 4 home runs in a single inning (6/30/77 at Toronto; 6/21/05 vs. Tampa Bay).Comment -

#1380He's nervous.
Plunked Panik with a curveball way inside.
Curveball has nice bite when he's not plunking Panik.
Fastball is 94MPH.
Span reached on infield single to shortstop. 0 0 Núñez lined into double play, third to first, Span doubled off first. 0 0 Belt flied out to right. 0 0 Nothing hit hard after two innings.Posey singled to shallow left. 0 0 Posey to second on balk by Lively. 0 0 Crawford grounded out to third, Posey to third. 0 0 Panik hit by pitch. 0 0 Calixte hit sacrifice fly to left, Posey scored. 1 0 Slater flied out to left. 1 0
Can't do anything about Span's IF hit.
Made a beautiful DP pitch.
Posey's hit was a soft bleeder, balk cost him that run.
Can't judge anybody after two inning, maybe two years, opening day jitters are normal, but he comes across as very smart, like he knows how to get outs (witness the DP) on this level.
Lively will probably be five and fly, let's see how he makes out in the 3rd-4th-5th.Comment -

#1388Marlins right-hander Edinson Volquez threw the first no-hitter of the 2017 season on Saturday, tossing a 10-strikeout, two-walk gem against the Diamondbacks en route to a 3-0 victory. He accomplished the feat on what would have been the 26th birthday of late Royals righty Yordano Ventura, who passed away in a car crash in the Dominican Republic over the winter. Volquez, also a native of the Dominican, was friends with Ventura and teammates with him in Kansas City from 2015-16. Volquez paid tribute to Ventura on Instagram prior to the game and dedicated the performance to both Ventura and late Marlins ace Jose Fernandez afterward (Twitter link via Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star).
More from Miami and two other NL cities:
- Although Padres righty Jered Weaver has been among the majors’ worst starters this season, the club isn’t ready to give up on the soft-tossing 34-year-old, according to Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune. The Padres’ hope is that Weaver will be able to competently eat innings when he’s ready to return from the disabled list. Weaver hit the DL on May 20 with left hip inflammation, a condition the ex-Angel says has been dealing with “for three or four years now.” Before landing on the shelf, Weaver recorded a 7.44 ERA and a 7.99 FIP over nine starts – all Padres losses – and 42 1/3 innings.
- The Cardinals are candidates to add Cuban righty Hector Mendoza, who’s eligible to sign with a major league organization July 2, reports Ben Badler of Baseball America (subscription required and recommended). The 23-year-old Mendoza is exempt from bonus pools, meaning the Cardinals won’t have to pay an overage tax if they sign him, notes Badler. Mendoza, who has pitched in both Cuba and Japan, features “a three-pitch starter’s mix,” per Badler, though he’s likely to end up in the bullpen if he cracks the majors.
- Marlins reliever Junichi Tazawa’s recovery from the rib issue that has sidelined him since mid-May hit an unusual snag, relays Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. The Japanese righty’s interpreter quit, thereby delaying his rehab assignment as the Marlins looked for a replacement. The club didn’t want to Tazawa to go it alone in Jupiter, Fla., “and potentially get lost or confused,” writes Jackson.

#1389One of the most memorable Jimmy Piersall moments was when he circled the bases backwards for the Mets on career home run # 100, June 23, 1963. Manager Casey Stengel cut him from the team two days later. The Phillies' Dallas Green gave up that homer at the Polo Grounds. Piersall died Saturday at age 87. Green died March 22 at age 82. #1391Just broke that game down.
My conclusion: Coin flip
Cosart is a hamburger that walks way too many batters (like 7 per 9 innings) and can't get a left handed batter out.
But he is stingy to right handed batters.
Hoffman is the better pitcher but I can't trust him because he coughs up the gopher ball too much for my liking.
I think over is the way to go, even if it's in Petco, a left handed batter like Blackmon should go off on Cosart.Comment -

#1397Here are the week’s biggest stories here at MLBTR…
Mike Trout undergoes thumb surgery. The Angels superstar will miss six-to-eight weeks due to a torn UCL in his left thumb, an injury suffered while making a headfirst slide into second base. It’s a devastating loss for both the Halos and for baseball fans in general, as Trout was putting together a season (.337/.461/.742 with 16 homers in 206 plate appearances) for the ages, even by his high standards. With Trout gone until mid-July at the earliest, the absence of their best player could push the Angels towards being sellers at the trade deadline.
Danny Duffy to the DL with an oblique strain. Speaking of teams that could be shopping their players at the deadline, the Royals took a blow with the news that Duffy will miss six-to-eight weeks with a strained oblique. Without Duffy (and his 3.54 ERA, 7.1 K/9 and 2.16 K/BB rate), it will be even harder for K.C. to make up ground in the AL Central.
Rangers designate, look to trade Sam Dyson. With the former closer suffering through a horrendous season, the Rangers designated Dyson for assignment with an eye towards trading the right-hander. Texas has already received interest in Dyson from multiple teams, with the Twins and Rays linked in reports. Since Dyson is earning $3.52MM this season, however, clubs could wait for him to pass waivers and then look to sign him, leaving Texas on the hook for the large majority of that salary. Dyson has an ungainly 10.80 ERA through 16 2/3 IP this year, with more non-intentional walks (nine) than strikeouts (seven).
Jeb Bush no longer looking to buy the Marlins. The former Florida governor had joined forces with Derek Jeter to put together an ownership group, but Bush left the bidding this week amidst reports that he and Jeter clashed over the Yankees legend’s desire to be in control of the bid. Jeter is reportedly still hoping to find other investors to continue his pursuit of the team.
Cardinals release Jonathan Broxton. A little over six months after signing the veteran reliever to a two-year, $7.5MM contract, St. Louis parted ways with Broxton after he posted a 6.89 ERA through his first 15 2/3 innings of 2017.Comment -
