Very quietly, Ubaldo Jimenez has bee very solid in all but two starts this year, which came back-to-back vs. the Yankees and Red Sox in his second and third starts. He is probably not owned in many leagues because of his 5.21 ERA due to those two stinkers, but in his last four starts he has allowed only five runs and 25 baserunners in 23.2 innings with 29 strikeouts vs. 8 walks.

Jon Lester could be the Comeback Player of the Year this season, and Monday he faces a White Sox team that is second to last in the American League in batting and dead last in runs scored.

                        PLAYING TIME TODAY
                        Dodgers | Andre Ethier benched
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly didn't deny that he wasn't sending a message by benching OF Andre Ethier Wednesday, May 22, after Ethier made the wrong read on a safety bunt squeeze and was thrown out at the plate Tuesday, May 21. 'There's a touch of a difference between saying you're giving your best effort and you're willing to fight for something,' Mattingly said. 'Some guys go to another level for that price, will do whatever it takes to win a game … that inside, you're not beating me today. There's something there you can't measure with sabermetrics. You can't put a number on it.' Source: MLB.com - Ken Gurnick

BHQ take: Mattingly is clearly feeling the pressure of high expectations. That said, Ethier's .239/.297/.356 career line vs. LHP tabbed him as a platoon player well before the Dodgers signed him to the big contract, so he's likely to sit more often. We're not yet buying the Yasiel Puig and Joc Pederson call-ups that were reportedly discussed, but if you're looking for an offensive flyer, Van Slyke's power (6-for-20 with 3 HR and 2 2B now entering Thursday) is interesting. The anemic Dodgers need offense wherever they can find it. -Jock Thompson

Angels | Ryan Madson has another setback
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim RP Ryan Madson (elbow) has had another setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery. Madson felt soreness in his arm, which required him to stop throwing. He hopes to resume his rehab next week, but there is no timetable for his return. Source: Los Angeles Times - Kevin Baxter

BHQ take: The Madson yo-yo continues. After an uneventful IP with a K in High-A, there was radio silence until this announcement. Stop us if you've heard this before: If Madson is healthy, he'll eventually take the closer role from Frieri, thanks to his superior Ctl and ability to induce GBs.. Unfortunately, this is beginning to look futher away than we initially thought, if it happens at all. -Jock Thompson

Red Sox | Sticking with Jacoby Ellsbury at leadoff
Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell is sticking with OF Jacoby Ellsbury at leadoff even though he is 3-for-24 through seven games of the team's nine-game road trip. Farrell was considering dropping Ellsbury down, but OF Shane Victorino (hamstring) has been dealing with multiple injuries. Victorino is not in the lineup Tuesday, May 21. 'We're sticking with (Ellsbury) to hopefully give him the opportunity to come out of the situation that he's in right now,' Farrell said. 'But I can say this: Whether he's hitting first or whether he's hitting somewhere else in the lineup, there are still things that we need to address, that he needs to address, and those are ongoing.' Ellsbury has just three walks in his last nine games and hasn't homered in 162 at-bats, but Farrell doesn't think Ellsbury is swinging too hard. Source: Boston Herald - Scott Lauber

BHQ take: These situations in the BOS outfield bear watching. Victorino's inability to stay healthy is opening the door for additional playing time for Carp, who is batting .310 with a .296 xBA, despite the odd combination of a 0.25 Eye, 62% contact rate and 46% hit rate. Victorino's absence leaves BOS without a real backup CF, which may be a hidden reason why Farrell is "sticking with" Ellsbury. Note that down on the farm, Jackie Bradley is putting his 1 for 31 start with the big club behind him, posting a .315/.422/463 slash line at AAA-Pawtucket since his demotion. He could be a candidate for additional AB if a move is needed in the BOS OF. -Matt Dodge

Giants | Ryan Vogelsong suffers broken hand
San Francisco Giants SP Ryan Vogelsong (hand) suffered a fractured right hand after he was hit by a pitch Monday, May 20. Source: San Francisco Chronicle - Susan Slusser

BHQ take: It was a make-or-break start that turned out painfully prophetic for Vogelsong. Pitching to retain his spot in the rotation, the five scoreless innings he tossed before being plunked earned him his first win since April 11. The outing also lowered his ERA to 7.19 and WHIP to 1.73, just a few indications of how nightmarish his 2013 has been. With surgery, he's expected to miss up to six weeks. As mentioned here several days ago, Chad Gaudin figures to get first crack at Vogelsong's innings, although Gaudin hasn't started a game since 2009 and has logged three or more IP in only two of 14 appearances this year. At AAA-Fresno, Chris Heston and Mike Kickham would warrant the most consideration for a call-up, although neither is distinguishing himself so far in the hit-happy Pacific Coast League. The Giants don't need the fifth starter's spot again until May 28, so they do have some time to consider their options. -Rob Carroll

                                                  B. Ryan is a rock bottom value sleeper today at middle infield.

Jonathan Lucroy is starting to heat up and he has a nice chance to keep it going. He is batting .348 the last seven days to raise his average to .264 with 6 HR, 33 RBI, .313 OBA and .420 SLG, and he has done that with a relatively low BABIP of .268 compared to a career BABIP of .308. Once that stabilizes, and it has started to the past week, Lucroy should have very good production for a catcher.

Brayan Pena, when in the lineup for Detroit, is also a good option for cheap
