#4Stat13,
last year when Pete Carrol got pissed about Sanchez leaving school early I said that something was wrong with this picture. Marc Richt did'nt get pissed when Moreno and Stafford left early last year. So why would Pete Carrol ? Pete got mad for the simple fact that he did not have a reliable back up to come in the following year to lead his program. Every coach last option is to start a freshman QB (especially at a top tier program) and it's all coming together on why he wanted Sanchez to REALLY stay. He wanted Barkely to be under his system for atleast 1 year and then take over as the starter, but his plans were ruined when Sanchez decided to enter the draft.
Think about it:
Carson Palmer - Matt Lienart
Matt Lienart - Josh Booty
Josh Booty - Sanchez
Sanchez - ??????
(ALL THESE GUYS WERE UPPERCLASSMENS WHEN THEY TOOK OVER AS QB)
This is how a top tier competitive program is ran! You have your QB'S sit in the system for a while before you throw them to the wolves.
Now you have a guy who played in front of 2,000 people last year, is about to start a game in front of 70 to 80,000 people. Nerves will be kicking his ass. But like I say we will never know how this will play. But I dont expect a freshman to come in and uphold what Sanchez , Booty, Palmer, and Lienert done in his first season.Comment -

#6You tell him Z.
Ignore the fact that Barkely was the number one player on 3 different recruiting services last year....
Ignore the fact that LSU's qb has exactly 2 starts.
Only LSU is allowed to have an inexperienced QB--why you ask? Because you gave us all a YouTube video to watch...yeah yeah, that's it.
Z you never fail to amaze me. You completely ignore the biggest variable here.
USC has the best OL in college football---and that isn't me saying it---it is any service/magazine/analyst you can think of saying it. Anytime you have a line that good----and the stable of running backs USC has----Barkely won't be asked to win games.
Trust me. I have your "USC will lose three games" prediction saved. It is going to be a fun year.Comment -

#7Martin all I'm saying is you can't expect a true freshman to be what all those QB's were. USC will loose two to three games . Count it!!
If you banking that a TRUE freshman who been under this offense for a couple of weeks can lead this team like Palmer, Sanchez, and Lienart than you have another thing coming.Comment -

plays.
That's bullshit if you guys think a freshman can lead this team underfeated or 1 loss.Comment -

#10I agree. Carroll had every coach's dream -- 2 or 3 top 20 QBs in his program and the leisure to choose the best one for the right time. Don't read too much into Corps not being chosen here, guys. Barkley has always been a top contender for the job.Comment -

#11Exactly Sooner.
This is what Carroll had the luxury of choosing from.
Corp was rated the #2 QB coming out of high school.
Mustain was rated as the #1 QB in his class.
And Barkely was also ranked as the #1 QB coming out of his class.
Not exactly a bad problem to have.Comment -

#12I expect LSU to go 10-2 and I also expect USC to go 10-2 or 10-3. (This is for Martin who think I'm being homer in this situation)
Yes USC has great QB's but it's still a different game in college. I have yet to see him play 1 game. So all I'm saying is you cant expect USC to be the same type team as they were in the past.
I expect them to start the season off slow offensively, even though they have a great offensive line. I'm quiet sure Pete Carrol dont want to put the game in his hands. So they will play it more conservative I think at the beggining of the season.Comment -

Explain this to me. Jefferson has not won a single SEC game yet...in fact, he has only started one SEC game----and you are excited about LSU's season.
Jefferson has completed less than 50% of his passes...and you have all the faith in the world that he will lead LSU to a 10-2 season.
Meanwhile---Barkely was the most sought after QB in the country last year----he enrolled at USC in January of last year----played very well in their spring game, and won the job this fall over 2 kids who LSU would have given their left nut to have on their team last year.
And you don't see the obvious contradiction?
How is it possible that you can look at the lack of experience Jefferson has and think LSU will be fine--and then look at USC's situation and think they are worse off?
It makes absolutely no sense.Comment -

#16Martin Jefferson did complete half of his passes but the kid was put in bad situation that made him look bad on stat sheets. He did not paractice with the 1's at all until th week of the Arkansas game. And he had them up by two touchdowns going into the half. But Les Miles got to conservative in the 2nd half and cost us the game. But look at him during the Bowl game were be had time to prepare and practice with the 1st teamer for the 2nd game . The kid got better by the gameComment -

#25THIS IS A ARTICLE FROM OCVARSITY.COM
He threw a county-high 18 interceptions, and his Mater Dei team got beat in the second round of the playoffs to finish 8-4.
That is not the type of senior year expected of Barkley, the Gatorade national player of the year as a junior in 2007.
From this view, Barkley tried to make big plays that weren't there at times, his fastball-of-a-pass sometimes had too much heat for high school receivers to catch (a problem he won't have at USC), and the offensive line at Mater Dei was not a team strength. Then there was the extraordinary pressure from all of the preseason accolades and expectations.
Peel it all away and this is what you have – Matt Barkley is a high school kid.Comment -
